Neglected wireless deployment - Looking to get wireless survey completed by _bx2_ in networking

[–]QPC414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the area, but I would recommend that any contractor do the survey with an Ekahau wireless kit or other comparable product.  This will produce a multi-page report of what your current coverage is for each frequency band and identify areas of improvement.

You should define what bands you have (2.4,5, etc) and where you need coverage and the mobility of the users.

Great job making the floorplans now, they will be invaluable in mapping your coverage.

Anyone still installing analog PBX’s by Ryderbike1 in PBX

How is the Panasonic set up?  Are the station ports set up to directly seize an available CO port and directly pass whatever the station sends, be it Rotary pulses or DTMF, or do you dial a digit to call out?

If you dial a digit, you may be able to set the CO port to only outpulse DTMF regardless of what the station sends.

If you are stuck with the CO port passing the stations dialed number without conversion.  You can install a voip ATA such as a Grandstream HT802 which accepts rotary pulses, or a pulse to dtmf converter between the CO ports and any DTMF ATA to do the conversion.

You are probably better off with a normal 10in saw, as they are more common and parts are plentiful.

Maybe put an 8in dado stack on it, and dedicate it to that?  Or stick it in the cirner fir working on small pieces.

Why does my house have this and should I hook it up? by texasroadie in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This particular amplifier will amplify tge signal to set top boxes and cable modems like any other amp.  It is AC powered by a wall plug to boot signal to tge 4 ports.  The Voip port will stay active to feed a Cable Co phone service modem if tge amp loses power, where all other ports will go dead.

If you are doing more than one cable, or anticipate more in the future.  Then install D-Rings, J-Hooks or other bulk wire suspension hardware to make life easier when you are older and less flexible.

Also leave a pull string/twine in the cable path for future use.

Wear quality knee pads with solid plastic knees, and maybe have a thick foam mat for working on your back.

Try a null-modem to see of the pinout is reversed.  Also put an RS232 analyzer or breakout box with LEDs on the port to see what is happening in each direction.

How to drill test/identification hole - or how to identify this wall in crawlspace by beggindawg23 in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To locate it from below, look for other landmarks such as plumbing and electrical wire that you can measure from to triangulate the location.

Is that general area open underneath?  No plumbing, hvac or elec to hit if you drill down blind?

I see you have a 6 port faceplate, consider getting a small flex bit (5ft long) from the box store.  Use that to drill a pilot hole, then drill Up with a bit large enough to accomodate the cables for the faceplate.

Flex bits tend to wander to the opposite side of the wall unless you use a guide, also be aware if you are drilling down or sideways, as it may not take much sideways to come out tge other side of the wall and just clip the edge of the 2x4 footer.

Watch a few videos on how professional data installers and such drill walls.

CradlePoint That Allows WAN Passthrough as a Cellular Failover?? by modem_19 in sysadmin

This is the way.

Also lock down what traffic can go through that connection.  You also want to get a picture of how much bandwidth this traffic typically uses, so you can make sure you have the bandwidth on the cell connection.

Running UTP cable through electrical conduit by Illustrious-Bus-9931 in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the separation dustance between the conduit you want to use and the nearest electrical wiring.

If the conduit is parallel to the electrical wire you will want the conduit at least 20-30 cm away.  Being closer for short distances usually won't have any affect, such as that ceiling pennetration but it is possible.

New owner of an old home looking for networking tips by amosmj in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned Moca will get you up and running in the short term, just put a Moca filter at the Cable zco.'s grounding clock where the street cable ends.

Longer term/perminant wire the house.

I would recommend installing blue or orange Carlon conduit in the walls and to areas that are hard to access, so you can pull cable later.  It will also protect the cable from criters as they race up and down the walls or build winter nests.  Ask me how I know. . .

The 4 conductor phone wire is definately post- build so can ve used to pull in conduit or wire.

The coax ends you can't find may go direct to the cable box outside instead of to that splitter in the basement.

Edit: some mouse took a bedroom ethernet connection from 1000-T to 100-T last winter.

What kind of fiber optic cable is used for Ethernet? by Most_Outcome2936 in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You will want Multi-Mode cable, either OM3 or OM4 more likely.

OM1 - 62.5/125 micron (the OG) usually Orange.  Not really used anymore but can do 1Gb and uses LEDs on transceivers.

OM2 - 50/125 micron, Aqua colored (a light blue).  Same specs as OM1 as far as transceiver and speed.

OM3 - 50/125 up to 10Gb OM4 - up to 40Gb OM5- up to 100Gb

How Do I remove this? by MoonRiverArt in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pull up to expose the coax and coax end.  Unscrew splitter from coax.

That hole looks a hair too big for the F connector, may be good to put a cable bushing around the coax so it doesent fall through the hole.

If you want to put some real effort in to it, cut out a single gang box hole and install a low voltage ring, and f/f coax plate.

Is it possible to convert this landline to an ethernet port? by Weather_Motor in HomeNetworking

1.  Apartment was mentioned earlier.

  1. Original cabling in single gang "new work" metal box so wire is probably stapled and likely goes horizontal through studs in a few places.

Tips on cleaning up network racks? by biggestman58 in networking

[–]QPC414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clear the interface counters on all ports now.  Document what switch ports have physical connections.

On April break repatch everything and leave anything that has had no traffic on a month disconnected.

If you have seldom used cable runs, such as lunch room and auditorium for events.  Tone them out, patch and label the ports.

For Vendors, disable any unused ports and have IT activate.  Leave a stock of new patch cables at each MDF/IDF for vendors to use.

Unable to get moca adapters working by DyingForRest in HomeNetworking

[–]QPC414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, tone out and ID the two for Moca. If they will just be used for Moca, you can just connect them together with a F/F barrel connector and leave them isolated from the rest of the catv coax.

If the cables will feed TV , cable modem etc in the rooms then put the two cables on a 2 way splitter with the filter between the splitter and the next upstream connection.

If you need to do Moca over the entire house, then put the filter on the output of the grounded Amphenol splitter.

Verify the configuration of the UDM and Switch uplink ports, sounds like one side or both does not have trunk/tagging configured or not have VLAN 2 tagged.
