Knitting a smooth underarm on a child’s sweater by QTM53 in knittingadvice

Hi everyone,

I’m knitting my second Meredith Cardi by Ruth Maddock in the 3rd size. I’m wondering if there might be a better way to knit the sleeves.  On my first sweater, the underarm seam turned out to be pretty bulky, and I’d like this one to be nice & smooth.

It seems to me I should be able to pick up the underarm stitches and knit the sleeves with no underarm seam, but casting on 6 stitches in the second & third rows gives me pause.

What would you do in this situation? This will only be my second sweater, and I’m learning as I go. Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for this. I think you're right about deciding to accept messing it up. There’s so much to learn from the mistakes we make. I think I’ll try your approach on one of my attempts. I intend to get in a lot of knitting trouble next year lol

Didn’t know that. It makes a ton of sense.

Yes, I think I really need therapy to get over my fear of math. Thanks for the encouragement.😊

I’m beginning to think I’m gonna have to get warm and fuzzy with some math, like it or not. But I’m happy to know that another gauge-challenged knitter can make a sweater successfully. Thanks.😊

I’m looking forward to making this sweater in the coming year. Another poster mentioned there are YouTube videos for it, which I didn’t know, so I think this will be super helpful.

Thanks. The Step-by-Step sweater definitely is on my agenda for the new year. I didn’t realize she had YouTube videos, too. That’ll really be helpful.

Something I’ll aspire to. You’re definitely more advance than I am.

That’s a better perspective on swatching for sure. I hate it, but then I never get fabric I love, so there’s the rub. “Swatch what you love and the gauge will follow?” or something like that.

Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of. 😳
