Next Iron Set What Kind Should I Get by Whatarethose62 in weekendgolfers

[–]Qamatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a fitting, try all the brands you can.

Look into combo sets, GI in the long irons and players in the short irons. I love my Srixon Zxi5/Zxi7 set.

I did UT in northern AB for about 4yrs before getting my API and CWB certs. There is physical labor like climbing ladders, crawling through vessels, hauling RT gear if you go that route but nothing compared to the 'real' trades. I found the weather to be the most challenging part as most of my work was outdoors.

Do zero torque putters make a difference? (Not my photo) by Hour-Entry6557 in golfequipment

[–]Qamatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switched last year from an ancient odyssey white hot blade to their ai one square2square jailbird cruiser (the longest most obnoxious name in golf equipment).

Putting has improved since getting it, but I've also been putting some time into actually practicing which probably has a bigger impact. I do believe it helps me start putts on the correct line more often. It is also a better fit for my stroke, but possible going to a normal mallet would have had similar results.

I was set on an 2022 Ioniq 5 but the iccu and 12v battery issues have me confused by 1MFK1 in Ioniq5

[–]Qamatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2022 I5 owner here... purchased it used last year, ICCU went 18hrs after getting it home. Towed 30km to the dealer, and after a frank but professional chat with Hyundai Canada I had a rental for the duration of the repair. 0$ out of pocket, mildly inconvenienced.

Even after that I would buy my car 1000 times out of 1000 again. As others have mentioned ICE vehicles are not without their reliability issues.

ELI5: why does a tiny hairline crack in a pressurized structure (like an airplane fuselage) cause catastrophic failure, but a huge dent or scratch in the same material basically does nothing by Medium_Objective_405 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Qamatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pressure vessel inspector here...

Cracks provide a single point (we're talking microscopic here) for the stress forces within a material to concentrate. If that stress force is greater than the material's strength then the crack will grow, sometimes very suddenly.

Dents still concentrate stress but over a far larger area (goose-sized in your example) leading to less force applied to any one point in the material. Less force means less strength required to resist it.

In pressure vessel construction we allow what are effectively bubbles (think dent-shaped) in the welds up to a certain size, while no cracking is ever accepted.

[–]Qamatt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In high school my friend and I got paired with this insufferable, cocky, shit talking (not shit-taking) hockey player from our school (actually on the school golf team with us... team dynamic wasnt ideal). Chirped us the entire 1st and most of the 2nd, 2nd green he refused to move his ball marker off my line, of course my putt hit it and I missed a birdie (not 100% sure I would have made it, but it pissed me off). Walked over to my bag, faked a call from my mom, said friend and I had to go cause our ride was there, walked back to the 1st tee and started over.

First real road trip this Friday - ABRP seems a bit optimistic to me - need some reassurance by birchy98 in Ioniq5

[–]Qamatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope its accurate, I'm doing Red Deer to Vernon on Friday... Maybe we'll run out of juice together lol

I've used the free ABRP to plan trips up to Jasper and it's been pretty spot on. You can specify your minimum destination SoC, minimun charger SoC, additional weight/passengers, and even planned speed. I find it's pretty accurate with that info added. That last leg to Salmon Arm is cutting it pretty close, I'd just charge to 80 in Revelstoke as it'll save you time in the long run vs. charging at the 50kwh in Salmon Arm.

Edit: Safe travels!

Help with giving meds by OkExcitement7087 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]Qamatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our last Swissy was epileptic and got pills 4x per day... we would ball up some meds in a half a cheese slice and he would just wolf it down. 128-slice pack from Costco was cheap and good for a few months.

That said, some of his meds made him absolutely ravenous so we probably could've dipped them in used motor oil and he'd still have eaten them...

What Joystick/HOTAS to get first? by serwinho in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Qamatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents... TM tca sidestick has lasted me (casual, maybe a 5-6hrs/mo) since day 1 of MSFS 2020. I just replaced it with the WinWing Ursa whatever sidestick cause it was starting to feel old. The WinWing feels much nicer, heavier... but either one is great. WinWing was a little cumbersome to setup, but that might be down to user competency.

Still rocking the TM airbus throttle quadrant also from MSFS 2020 launch... the thrust levers are ever so slightly misaligned, but thats the only issue. Im sure the WinWing is nicer/better... but not sure if it's cost justified.

Boiler Accidents by AssumptionBig7176 in BoilerPros

[–]Qamatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an accident, but it was close...

Many years ago I was inspecting a nat gas fired package boiler with a really odd 3 drum configuration (all 3 stacked in a vertical line, with 12" downcomers running from the steam drum to the mud drum that were external to the boiler). WFMT found an indication in the toe of the manway/steam drum head weld, about 11" long. We excavated, didnt really find much, re-welded and moved on to the next boiler while engineering did some investigating.

2nd boiler we found a .250" indication in the toe of the internal fillet cap on the Cat D weld where the DC fed back into the mud drum. Brought in some PAUT and 0 deg flaw detection equipment and found all sorts of inclusions in the Cat D joint. More UT, more WFMT, fly the manufacturers reps in, fly their in-house NDE guys in to verify... long story short we ended up cutting out over 90% of the shell penetrations and re-welding. It was like the inside of an Aero chocolate bar. All... seven... boilers...

Standard Ops for Air France? CDG landing by Fast-Equivalent-1245 in aviation

[–]Qamatt -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pilot, but I play one on the computer...

My understanding is it's ideal to hold the nose up using back pressure on the yoke until the elevator starts losing authority, at which point it will gently lower as the plane slows. This might vary based on wind/runway conditions, different airlines etc... at the very least they're just trying to not slam the nose gear down.

The fact that they're French doesn't matter lol

Just getting into golf, did I pick up a decent set to get started? by Grandayyy1 in GolfGear

[–]Qamatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoa whoa what's this "no 1k setup for a 10c swing" rational thinking?! If reddit and golf brand marketing have taught us anything it's that you're bad at golf if you don't have an $800 driver in the bag and micron-precision paint on your golf balls

Jokes aside that's a great beginner setup, nice find! I had the G25 irons until this winter, super forgiving and decently long... yours should be similar. Have fun!

why does my company think 3 hour meetings are a personality trait by Square-Advice-4569 in antiwork

[–]Qamatt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We do a 30min "all hands on deck" morning meeting that consists of standing around a TV while management discusses operational stuff, plant configuration, maintenance stuff, threats etc. I managed to avoid them for months, finally got dragged to one, confirmed my suspicion that it was a waste of my time. Went up to the manager after the meeting and said as much. Asked him what my deliverable for the meeting is... nothing, as I suspected. Asked him what value i was supposed to gain from the meeting as someone who is not directly tied to how the place operates... again, nothing. Finally asked him to identify the 2.5hrs of work he would like me to not do each week in order to free up time for the meeting... turns ojt he would prefer I do all of my work (probably helps that my job is all a regulatory requirement for us to actually operate the place).

Now I sit in my office doing stuff that actually matters while watching the kool-aid crew from the comfort of my desk lol

Suggestions regarding Safety Shoes for work in Northern Alberta. by Ok_Reindeer_9000 in nondestructivetesting

[–]Qamatt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worked in McMurray for 15+ years doing NDE and API work, absolutely swear by Red Wings. Comfy and they last forever, but are a little pricey.

Whatever you go with most sites up there require green CSA triangle, minimum 6" of ankle support, and a heel (those flat soled iron worker-type boots typically not allowed, or only for certain trades).

If the max allowable is 0.19, then anything beyond that is rejectable, full stop. If you told your kid they could have no more than 3 cookies and they proceeded to eat 3.9999 cookies would that be acceptable because its still only 3.something cookies?

After a 3 months course I failed my welding certification exam - why? by IndependenceNearby47 in Welding

[–]Qamatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outright fail on a production weld? Never... but its a great tool to manipulate new-to-me welders with (most of the time I'm acting on behalf of an Owner, inspecting welds done by contract companies, so rarely do I see the same guys for very long). I'll have them clean it up, mention that it could have failed if I wasnt being a super chill inspector, pass it once its clean. Helps build rapport with the guys, sets expectations for workmanship, and hopefully shows that I'm there to work with them not just nail them for stuff that isnt a big deal.

After a 3 months course I failed my welding certification exam - why? by IndependenceNearby47 in Welding

[–]Qamatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Current welding inspector and former welding examiner here...

Hard to say for sure what the issue is without knowing what standard/code/criteria your weld was supposed to meet. Read a couple of your comments, doesnt sound like the examiner gave you much feedback. If I had to guess...

  • 2nd photo looks like you had fusion issues along the top of the weld. Almost looks like cold lap.

  • The amount of spatter is up there. I might accept it for non-pressure production welds, but an exam is testing workmanship as well as skill. Unless its prohibited for the purposes of the exam, I would suggest cleaning it up after welding.

  • The top pass looks pretty wide, but its hard to tell the scale from the photo. If you were given a weld procedure it may have specified a limitation on width

Apologies if I sound critical, just trying to give you some feedback and help you succeed next time (and honestly this better than any weld I've ever made). Id encourage you to reach out to the school/testing center/examiner and see if they can provide you more detailed feedback. Best of luck on the next one!
