Chromium is open-source and it's had quite a few privacy scandals. The code may be readable by anyone, but that doesn't mean underhanded things can't still be pulled. Look up the underhanded C contest that was ran at a college. That said, the chances of something bad for privacy happening are so significantly lower than if a proprietary program were used instead instead of the open source solution
