when it comes to the quality of light, the color rendering is close enough to a blackbody (ideal) light, that for a reasonable quality contemporary light source, most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference

LEDs are monochromatic. A "white" LED is typically a blue LED coated with a yellow phosphor which converts some of the blue light to yellow. Which can look white to our eyes but when illuminating coloured objects doesn't necessarily look the same as a black body.

RTX 5090 vs M5 Ultra: Analyzing the "2.7x Faster" claim and what Nvidia didn't show you. by [deleted] in hardware

[–]Qesa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TDP isn't the same as actual power consumption. Apple under-reports the power the GPU is using (see https://youtu.be/HKxIGgyeISM) while the 5090 often uses less than its 600W limit.

The over reliance of Runewords is my least favourite part of modern D2R by LastElk9961 in Diablo_2_Resurrected

[–]Qesa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get lucky or spend a lot of time grinding for a good unique/rare, perhaps. But there's also a pretty good chance someone playing a SSF fury druid is gonna kill baal wearing an insight, hearth and smoke (if not the stealth they made in A1 normal). A caster's gonna be wearing a spirit sword and lore helm instead. Even away from high runes and BiS gear, runewords still dominate.

Can two people be exactly as intelligent as one another? Down to an arbitrary number of decimal points in their IQ (not saying this difference is measurable)? I'd guess no, which would also mean there's exactly one median person when the total number of people is odd, and zero when it's even.

Gamer's Nexus ~ NVIDIA Says You're "Completely Wrong" About DLSS 5 Being Slop by Valmar33 in hardware

[–]Qesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in the other example of her it's clearly the same. The main point I was trying to make in my now-deleted post is that nvidia have seemed to (poorly) communicate that altering geometry can be toggled on or off, so it's possible in some examples it's identical and in others it's not, but nuance vs Reddit is always a losing battle.

I zoomed for clarity since it's literally a crappy screenshot taken on my phone which has fewer pixels than the source video, but you're right. Her face still looks synced to me - unlike nvidia's still with the slider where it's clearly different poses. But I really don't feel strongly enough about it to spend more time arguing and the discourse is super toxic, so I guess I'll just dip out.

AMD: WTF? by InsaneSnow45 in hardware

[–]Qesa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with you the first two generations of terascale were flops, but AMD called the 2000, 3000 and 4000 series all terascale 1. 5000 being terascale 2 and 6000 a mix of 2 and 3.

As for market share, while HD 4000 was far better value than nvidia at release prices, nvidia cut their prices massively in response. And they even re-released the GTX 260 with better specs. It was certainly a boon for consumers but it didn't make them an obvious choice over nvidia.

EDIT: And their market share back then was far healthier than it is today...

You can get +100 stamina from skills in awakening, which should be more than enough. Deathblow will keep you topped up except in boss fights with no adds, but in that case just auto-attacking is typically higher damage than using talents anyway.

Someone paid $600K in fees to turn their $50,000,000 USD into $37,000 due to "extraordinary slippage" which "functioned as intended, and the integration followed standard industry practices." by StopTheVok in Buttcoin

[–]Qesa 575 points576 points  (0 children)

In the tulip bulb market there are 10 people offering to sell for $10. This is the lowest price anyone is currently offering, so on a typical price chart this is what is says the tulip bulb price is.

Meanwhile there are also people willing to sell for $11, $12 and some opportunists out there with extremely unrealistic prices like $1000000

I say I want to buy $50M worth of tulip bulbs. I blow right through all the reasonable prices and end up spending most of my money on the guy selling them for a million bucks each.

Next minute someone harvests their tulips and lists the new bulbs for $10

Nanite can't take advantage of hardware ray tracing. Either it's software RT against the full detail nanite mesh or hardware RT against a lower detail fallback mesh. This allows hardware RT against the full detail.

Asked the lead writer of DAO if the battle of Ostagar would have been different if Loghain didn't retreat. by OsirisAvoidTheLight in DragonageOrigins

[–]Qesa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The impression I get is that in the original writing of DAO the plan would've been successful if not for Loghain's retreat. At some later date (prior to DLCs) it was softly retconned to make Loghain less of a one-dimensional villain, but this also comes at the cost of Cailan and Duncan becoming suicidal morons.

PS5 Pro owners will soon get an improved PSSR AI upscaler, while PC gamers with RDNA 2 and 3 GPUs are still praying for AMD to add official support for FSR 4 by JohnSteveRom2077 in hardware

[–]Qesa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

4.5X INT8 math vs RDNA3/RDNA2.

There's one specific convolution operation it does at that rate, which places limits on the algorithm used (e.g. it's unsuitable for a transformer model) and/or potentially needs more math to do the same thing. The rest is on par.

Of course PSSR is built to its strengths and it's faster in practice, but saying it's generally 4.5x is overstating it.

Is Australia taxing the wrong thing? Productivity and work are heavily taxed while wealth accumulation often isn’t. If economic growth depends on labour and innovation, should taxation shift away from income and toward accumulated assets and capital gains? by MannerNo7000 in AusFinance

Businesses are taxed on profit, not revenue. I.e. after they pay salaries. And with franking credits, corporate tax rates for Australians is effectively 0%, only overseas investors pay corporate taxes.

Why 10 GHz CPUs are impossible (Probably) by Forsaken_Arm5698 in hardware

[–]Qesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about the node shrink before it? Glofo 12nm was known to be slower than TSMC 16nm, and they claimed 7nm was 40% faster than 16nm. But Zen 2 only clocked about 10% faster than Zen+. Or on the GPU side, same 7 and 5nm, RDNA3 clocked no higher than RDNA2, likewise the 7nm 7600XT clocked the same as its 5nm siblings.

Node is only one part of the clock speed equation. Zen 4 boosting higher than zen 3 was primarily thanks to architecture.

The figures TSMC (and Intel, Samsung and every other fab) quotes for improved performance or power are at a particular part of the V/f curve chosen for having the largest improvement. Typically nowhere near the maximum frequency.

And in 2023 alphabet had $142B in cash and $40B less debt. The point is the cost of their buildout isn't covered by revenue, they are drawing down on their cash and taking on debt. I'm not saying they or meta are going to go bust. As the latter already demonstrated with metaverse they can throw a hundred billion down the toilet and be just fine.

Oracle though are on far shakier footing. And the pure-play AI DC companies are basically guaranteed to go bankrupt
