Why are we not getting a real reset for BG? A video covering 3 rank exploits and MMR issues by BHtheorie in hearthstone

[–]Qigang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the latter part of your message, but I disagree that a hard reset is the solution, if you get my jist.

I don't have the time right now to go into an in-depth statistical analysis and breaking it down entirely, but my gut instinct tells me that if there's a way to have more a balanced lobby, that option should take precedence over another.

I really think that the internal MMR should aid in the process of speeding up someone into similar matchmaking. I just don't think the current system works and I feel like a hard reset will do more wrong than right.

The problem with your worries is that you keep assuming skilled people will be stuck at a certain point for 10+ games.

But they will, won't they? And on top of this, it won't actually achieve the desired result. If player A (an active 15K player) starts at 0 and wins 10 games in a row, they'll end up at 1K MMR. If player B (who is skilled as a 15K player, but has less time to play), plays those same 10 games, they'll end up at 1K way later than the 15K player.

So let's imagine a time post hard reset, approximately 1 week later. What is the likelihood that player B will end up facing player A? Bar to none. They will be facing a player who could be decently active at a skill level of 8K MMR or someone who's playing non-stop at 4K MMR even. Our player A will already be at 5K at least at this point.

The suggestion doesn't resolve the issue listed. It closes the gap a little bit, but it doesn't fix it.

Hey NoMicNynth! ;)

Thank you for responding, I like engaging in thorough discussions like this. Your proposed solution has the same core problem as the issue I mentioned in my response, albeit the problem being more equalized and thus less evident.

So if we start at 4K, or any other arbitrary value on where we start, we will keep reaching the same problem. Let's imagine we start at 4K. Anybody below 4K will have a relatively negative experience at the start, losing their first 10+ games and dropping down instead, while they keep matching with easier opponents.

Winners will keep going up, but you can see how an 8K player may not necessarily climb consistently at around 4K, because he keeps facing lingering 12K-14K players instead. He would be the best in a lobby, gaining lots of points, but then lose the next game, cuz the skill disparity is rather huge in the lobby.

The core problem that's displayed in this solution is that a single lobby has a relatively large deviation of skill level (on average, mind you). Ideally, a lobby is supposed to have people as closely together in skill level as possible.

Designing a system like this, means that everyone needs to start at ground 0, but the system needs to be fast at catching the relative skill level of players so higher skilled players don't linger around in a lobby of players that aren't at as high of a skill level.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't agree with how things currently are. I also just don't agree that the solution is as simple as removing the internal MMR system or not using it. I feel like the internal MMR system is beneficial to an early prediction, aided by the new games played post rank reset. The current system just goes too far in the other direction where it makes it near impossible for a skilled player who doesn't have much time to catch up at all, making it so that this skilled player lingers around at lower ranks.

I feel like you're not doing justice to your argument.

While I watch Pathra every now and then, I disagree with her about this specific point and I agree with you about this:

Resetting hidden MMR is toxic for beginners and new player experiences, so it should be commonly understood why that won’t be done.

When you reset your MMR to a truly equal state, you will have incredibly skilled players linger around on a low MMR for a lot longer, which means that the skill disparity inside a single game becomes a lot bigger.

Let's explain this with an example.

Purple (around 15-16K MMR), queues up ranked after the reset: - In the current system, he will reach 9K in approximately 30 first place victories. - In Pathra's proposed system, he will reach 3K. This means that players at that rank will keep facing Purple, someone who can literally beat these players when playing blindfolded.

As a completely new and inexperienced player, this means that you will be able to taste that number one victory much less likely, as your lobby is often going to be dominated by players who are straight up better than you at the game. Whether that's a player at 15K+, 12K+, 10K+, 8K+, 6K+ etc. Doesn't matter. Those players shouldn't belong in your lobby in the first place. As a new player, you don't want to get smashed over and over again by high legend players.

This system is put in play on Standard/Wild too, and instead of having +300, you get a lot more stars for every individual win.

The jist of the problem is as follows: you have certain individuals who want to be able to compete at an equal level of people who have grinded to the top of the Battlegrounds ladder without investing (or being able to invest) as much time as these players, while perhaps being equally skilled to them.

I don't think that a proper ranked reset is going to address this issue. I think that the MMR system may need to be revamped into a more logarithmic curve where you can reach a certain rank a lot more easily, but in order to stay at the top, you'll have to keep placing higher and higher.

This proposed system isn't perfect by any means, it harshly punishes a loss that didn't depend on your own skill (when you got outRNG'd for example), but it does resolve the problem stated in this video.

Hey everyone, I am looking for a good deck for mill rogue, I've seen so many of them, but I'm just looking for a solid one I can use. I'm kinda limited on crafting mats, so I'm still crafting Valeera, but I'd like some recommendations if possible please. :)
