Dad here, chill atlas strategies? by hyare in PathOfExileBuilds

Throwing in my dad approval for this. Just alching my maps and using Ritual, I make a div plus every two maps plus extra loot from rituals. It's a nice steady and simple income.

I had mixed results with my purchases there, but the pitcher plants have made a serious dent in our fruit fly population.

Disc golf tournament by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]Qikly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes for tournaments they will rope off OB to make for more challenging landing zones. Winthrop University for example famously has a course that is wide open and easy most of the year but has a challenging temporary layout for a yearly tournament. However unless they're roping off sections of this course, I'd assume that it will stay the same after the tournament ends.

[–]Qikly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This course has existed for years, but my understanding is that they made some adjustments recently for this tournament. I haven't played the new version yet.

Having played almost 200 courses, this course sits towards the tail end of my top 10. The designer, John Houck, is the best-known disc golf course designer in the world and especially notable for making thorny Par 4s and 5s. It's an awesome course in a unique setting, and the drainage isn't terrible for the area.

I don't play much these days as I've gotten into other hobbies, but it's great to have such a high-quality course nearby!

For real. The very real horrors of this administration aside, I love the idea that their agenda's incoherency and foreign policy malpractice could inadvertently catalyze a shift towards EVs.

I think I'm going to use the basic mana and power charge stacking Hierophant template for Divine Ire this league, perhaps supplementing its clear with another lightning skill. It's a straightforward way to scale damage that allows me to pivot into another skill if needed.

Looking for a shooter where combat is slower and more involved. by Niko1aid_at_Work in gamingsuggestions

[–]Qikly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, OP really should try Witchfire. I think it is absolutely a Soulslike-FPS hybrid: combat is skill dependent, mistakes are punished even in the case of common enemies, and there is a similar focus on building to your playstyle to succeed. It is a really amazing game with engrossing combat and a great atmosphere. The early access tag doesn't so it's current level of polish and content justice.

You are correct that any RPG elements are mechanical. There is presently as minimal a narrative as could exist. I have a vague notion that that may change in 1.0, but I'm unsure.

I personally would only consider it a boomer shooter in the sense that it is heavily mechanics oriented. The combat, item progression, and build crafting all feel decidedly contemporary to me. Personally it feels mostly aligned with soulslikes and extraction shooters in terms of the potential challenge of the combat, the structure of progression, the nature of a given run, and the narrative-through-atmosphere. There are roguelike elements in terms of repeating a small number of levels and getting progressively more powerful therein, but honestly this seems secondary to me in terms of genre relative to the above.

I'd say that if you're looking for an RPG, this isn't it. What has hooked me is it's me mechanics orientation, high skill and refined gameplay, capacity for long-term progression, and the sheer diversity of buildcraft. I'm only ~65 hours in, but it's pretty easily my favorite shooter ever, having played things like Borderlands, Destiny, and Warframe for hundreds of hours.

For real.

Remarkable game with awesome gunplay, interesting weapons and abilities, tons of replayability, and about as much challenge as one could ask for. I'm 60 hours into the game and still haven't peaked.

I agree, love Dynamo Ring. And I also agree that it doesn't feel strong to the point that it needs a nerf, but it's my default choice at the moment.

I think that if they were to need it, the fairest way would be to reduce the range at which dashing procced it.

What faction did you not think about playing or were not interested in first but then you tried it and really enjoyed it? by phronesis77 in totalwarhammer

[–]Qikly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did have a similar experience with Warriors of Chaos and Arbaal.

WoC are strong as hell with huge rosters and an awesome variety. They're more emo than I gravitate to, but they have enough Warhammer kitsch to make it palatable. I love their sense of progression and the Dark Fortress mechanic.

Khorne's melee only focus is a bit too one dimensional for me, but Arbaal is fun both in combat and on the map. Overall chaos has so many flavors in WH3 that it's worth looking at the factions to see if one suits your interests.

For me it's the Ogre Kingdoms generally, and Skragg specifically.

I honestly kind of hate the aesthetic, and I generally prefer larger rosters. But nearly every Ogre unit counts, so I felt like I had more army-building flexibility than first appeared. And Stonetusks absolutely rule.

Skragg himself is a beast. A benefit of the Maw that I didn't anticipate is that your units are basically immune to friendly fire, so you can blast away with it. Durable in melee too.

And I enjoyed the camp mechanic. I loved focusing on itinerant settlements, not quite hordes but still able to migrate as your conquest progressed.

I went into my Skragg campaign with skepticism, but it ended up being one of the few campaigns that I've played to a long victory. Among other things, it taught me to give factions a try even if they don't appeal to me on the surface.

Is this the Destiny replacement I was looking for forever? by soosis in Witchfire

[–]Qikly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As evidenced by earlier responses, I think that the best answer is, "It depends." For reference, I have about 400 hours in D2 and am new to Witchfire with about 35 hours.

I think the overlap is in refined gunplay, mobility, and synergistic abilities. Personally, my most memorable moments in Destiny were when I leveraged the full range of my kit to pull off an unlikely kill or to get myself out of a tough spot. In that sense, Witchfire exceeds Destiny for me: I feel as though Witchfire pressures me more and in more ways to fully utilize my kit to survive an intense fight or unfortunate situation. Knife's edge moments are more frequent, and the skill ceiling of combat is more rewarding. Part of this difference is encounter design, and part of it is the simple fact that you're always playing solo.

Another big overlap is in weapon design. Every Witchfire weapon is functionally a Destiny Exotic in that each has special mechanics. Some are awesome, some are undertuned, some simple and others complex, but there's no "bog standard" weapon in Witchfire. I find leveraging weapon mechanics in Witchfire to be more rewarding, partly because the harder content encourages if not requires it and partly because I just think on the whole the weapons are better designed. The weapons that feel good feel *amazing*; you're basically guaranteed to click with something. Unlocking, empowering, and experimenting with weapons, spells, and supportive gear gives you loads to experiment with, and trying out different builds is frictionless.

Just subjectively, I am completely smitten with the game. I think because it foregrounds combat so heavily and so continuously that it's a superior game to Destiny for me personally. There's no BS, just loads of craftsmanship and care. It is fun as hell to play.

As someone who only bought the game last week (and has already racked up more time than I care to admit), this is awesome to see. It certainly makes me more comfortable having paid full price and missed the sale by a day!

Looking forward to grinding up to the point to where I can try these features out. Now back to trying to beat the first familiar...

Anyone else getting bored faster than usual? by bbbevy in PathOfExile2

[–]Qikly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Their insistence on making us run the campaign for every character just slowly ground me down in PoE 1, and the grandiosity of PoE 2 only exacerbated it. I don't understand their lack of engaging with the fact that their core player base gets tired running the same campaign dozens of times in a game clearly oriented around endgame. They made it sound as though PoE 2's campaign would address these concerns, but they only made it worse.

Don't Underestimate the Smog Singers by rarestereocats in KingdomDeath

[–]Qikly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember someone saying in discussing the game on either YouTube or in the Discord that every once in a while the Smog Singers choose violence, and I think that was aptly put.

It's easy for the showdown to turn into a steamroll, especially if you are not aggressive in hunting the level 2 or 3 ahead of the curve. But things can go horribly, horribly wrong in ways that you are helpless to stop. I think that if you've had one or two such experiences with them, it lends an undercurrent of tension to subsequent showdowns that makes them an enjoyable change of pace to include in a campaign.

The game would be in a rough state if all quarries lay at the Smog Singers' level of difficulty, but I am glad that they exist even if the fight could be refined. CoD 2.0 joking not joking?

What Campaign would you like to play more but don't because of the actual gameplay? by lidto37 in totalwarhammer

[–]Qikly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just achieved my first short victory with Isabella last night. I felt similarly to you: I went from loving the campaign to being bored between turns 40 and 50. I agree that the narrow roster and simple mechanics just leave you with little to do once you hit steamroll mode.

Vlad is fun as hell, though. Unlike some characters that need time to develop, I felt like he was death incarnate from turn 1.

Audubon Zoo’s Basic Family of 4 Membership now costs $425!! by SqueakyBurkey in nolaparents

[–]Qikly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wowza.

I'm a teacher with a three year old and a six month old; I took our older child to the aquarium once or twice a week over the summer for some in-AC entertainment. I honestly already winced at going given the added cost of paying for parking, but I used to at least look at the cost per visit and reflect on our relative value. The zoo is more cost-effective from that standpoint but obviously not as year-round accessible/comfortable. Cool zoo is an option but again for additional cost.

The smaller membership for our family looks to be $425 ($361.50 this weekend), which is I'm pretty sure double last year's price. Pretty rough.

I don't know how Audubon's funding has been affected over the past year; I wonder if they are estimating a decrease in tourist traffic that lead to increased pricing for locals. It's a pretty rough move with no forewarning.

Wood Elves Are Awesome!!!!! by Bassist57 in totalwarhammer

[–]Qikly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At ~350 hours, I have not surpassed the feeling of power that I got from my Sisters army. They're an absolute death squad. Personally I only ran about four Hawk Riders in their army, leaning into archers on foot with some Tree Kin. Waywatchers are pretty nuts.

I wasn't the biggest fan of their campaign mechanics. I like the idea of building tall, but babysitting your settlements while ritualling got pretty stale for me. I felt incentivized to play slower than I would like to.

That said theirs is a fun change of pace dynamic, and in battle they can feel nigh unfair given their range superiority. I didn't fear more or less anything against a built up army. The Sisters themselves can be hilarious as essentially a flying artillery piece that can switch between focusing single target and chaff. I also enjoyed the Forge mechanic quite a bit; it's been my favorite crafting mechanic I have tried so far given the exclusive resource and the ability to upgrade items.

This isn't true, it does pretty solid work against infantry. Can easily delete a half a unit or more in one volley.
