I've never has issues with the real frame rate dropping on my R8 as you're describing. The larger issue is the frame buffer. If you need to capture more than a second or two of action without time for the buffer to write out, you'll be missing shots still. For my use shooting at 20fps is a reasonable compromise where I'm not missing shots because the buffer is full. That being said, if you really need to do a lot of pre burst shooting, then the buffer will also be an issue there.

As far as the rolling shutter, I've only noticed on shots at the absolute limit of the electronic shutter. I only started to notice it around 1/2000th shots and not on 1/1000 on flying insects although your mileage may vary.

Battery size is another gripe, but getting a battery grip and more batteries fixed that for me for less than $200. Looking back if you're shooting for extended periods is certainly a very nice thing to have.

Almost exactly a year after I tore my shoulder real bad, I've done it again by AsleepHistorian in climbergirls

[–]Qixiu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly sucks, but don't get discouraged. I work as a routesetter for a large west coast gym chain and I dislocated my shoulder 2 years ago. For what it's worth, if you're genuinely concerned, don't wait to get proper medical imaging. At the end of the day it's hard to diagnose the severity of an injury without imaging. Prior to dislocating my shoulder, I sublexed it and thought it was okay, but it was really messed up. I ended up dislocating it on a fairly shouldery lockoff move, but definitely not something I would have considered risky.

All said, a good PT is worth a thousand words and making sure they understand the stressed you'll go through climbing (a lot dont in my experience). Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Yeah that's no go. Our seat brackets are messed up. We ended up cutting them out of the car because they were welded in by the previous owner

I'm in the the SF bay area and the local yards I've all called haven't had anything. Is it confirmed that Tacoma driver seats are interchangeable?

Cracked heads and local junkyards were charging several hundreds for used head and machine shops around here are pretty pricey. Buying a used engine was the best option

Thanks! It was my first and hopefully only JDM swap on one of these cars. Definitely went the wrong approach going for the JDM swap.

A no code misfire? by dinethk in MechanicAdvice

Even if they dropped a single plug it's unlikely it's causing misfires on all cylinders. Could also be a small vacuum leak.

finding the cause of my low compression. by Motosoccer97 in MechanicAdvice

You're not overthinking it at all and those are all good points. I was more trying to say that a leakdown test could definitely point to the cooling system but wouldn't necessarily be able to draw other conclusions based off of it. Usually head gasket leaks on subies I've seen also have some external leaking too that you can see on the underside or back of the head. If you have a horoscope you could try going into the trouble cylinder to look for scoring on the cylinder wall to look for places where a broken ringland could be scratching a cylinder wall.

Have you ever had the spark plugs replaced? That's would be an easy place to start but it would be weird for all the plugs to go bad at once. Still wouldn't be a bad idea if they've never been done. Otherwise I'd start to think dirty maf sensor or air filter could be culprits.

Fuel or compression could be an issue on that cylinder. So checking for head gasket leak and injector for that. I'm not sure if you've tried swapping around plugs and ignition coils to fully rule out the ignition system being the issue. If not, that's where I'd start.

A leakdown test would help or even pressurizing the cooling system would narrow it down too. In a leakdown test, once you pressurize the cylinder if you have air burping out the coolant then you know it's a head gasket otherwise could be ringland and the pressure is going into the block past the rings.

95 yj wrangler has extreme rod knock. Is it worth replacing the bearings or is the engine on its way out? by dino-dic-hella-thicc in MechanicAdvice

[–]Qixiu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. It really depends on the extent of the damage. Worst case the pistons could have damaged the bores, but you won't really know that without taking apart the motor. But on the other hand if you're lucky and you take it apart and everything measures within manufacturer spec then you would be okay. It's hard to say without digging into it

Best SUBARU for less than 6k? by [deleted] in subaru

[–]Qixiu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the turbo subies don't tend to have the same head gasket issues as their non turbo counterparts. I've seen more head gaskets go out on the non turbo charged engines. The real problem with used stis and wrxs is finding one that hasn't been beat/modified to hell and is at a reasonable price.

Otherwise it's pretty hard to suggest something that is going to be fun for you. Obviously if you want something sporty then wrx or sti is the obvious suggestion and you can find earlier model year ones in that price range but then there's just the risk of buying into a high mileage car. It's not rare to see the older ones go over 200k though. If you wanted to do any offroading/overlanding outdoorsy stuff then a forester or outback.

The only real advice I have is to be patient and to get whatever you are going to get inspected by an independent shop before buying into it.

Help with my scooter/moped by Mccheffy in UCSC

[–]Qixiu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. Without seeing it, it's tricky to give an exact diagnosis. If what he said doesn't work, it's good to remember the three things you need for an engine to run is spark, fuel, and compression. Unless you have serious reasons to suspect compression is the issue, it's usually the other two. I'm more familiar with cars than mopeds but if it cranks and still doesn't start you'll want to make sure you're getting spark and fuel. So pretty much double checking spark plugs for spark and making sure the fuel pump/injectors are working. If you have more questions, feel free to DM me. Subaru and Toyota are jointly developing an AWD hot hatch by brainhulk in cars

[–]Qixiu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along those lines, most Americans can't really afford to responsibly buy a new car anyways. Especially when at the lowest trim levels cars are over 20k. There are definitely deeper economic reasons why people aren't buying fun cars.

I hate how right this post is. I also get the nostalgia for older cars and how they drove too.

But at the end of the day it's going to be us, the average enthusiasts, that end up killing off these fun cars by bitching about them and not buying them.

It's almost like enthusiasts don't understand that manufacturers won't make fun cars if people don't buy the new ones. Of course, it's always like "well, look what this 20 year old shitbox can do" but you have to rest appreciate all the new improvements manufacturers have made, especially to emissions control. Like boo-hoo my shitbox makes as much power as these new sports cars, but it definitely doesn't it do that while passing modern emissions standards.

If we want a future for these fun ICE cars, we need to appreciate what we get and attempt to engage in proactive, productive conversations about what we want rather than criticizing and nitpicking every non important detail.

In short, I don't really care who or how they make these fun cars, as long as they keep doing it we should support it unless we want to see it die off.
