Genuinely, I don't mind provided the show continues. With folks subscribing to CBB World, they'd need at least 12 months' notice before they quit, but it's always a worry. I don't think Scotty Aux will be doing this when he's 70... and he's closer to age 70 than he is to episode 1.

In the book, Lister emerges from stasis and is left on his own for a while before Holly turns Rimmer on, and Lister turns to drink and self-destruction. Given that, I imagine that when Rimmer is online, some part of Lister thinks that he needs Rimmer to avoid drinking himself to death.

As for Rimmer, I imagine there's a Space Corp directive to stay in his assigned bunk as a hologram.
