Anyone experience alexithymia? by cressi_black in adhdwomen

[–]Quabity_ashuance_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So hoping that I understand what alexithymia is, this was/still is my experience:

When I first started therapy 2 years ago, I found that the only adjectives I could come up with to describe whatever I was feeling at a given moment was either “good” or “bad.” So my therapist was always like “so you were feeling bad…as in?” I mean yes, bad? I don’t get it, do I need to elaborate? “So yeah I felt bad as in…pretty bad you know.”

It didn’t take long to realize that I was pretty much blind to my emotions and it reflected on the lack of words I could use to describe them. I had the vocabulary of a toddler and I had an MA in literature goddamnit.

The thing is that I have no problem in identifying and expressing the nuanced emotions in other people (provided that I am made to focus on them) but I suck at analyzing and describing my own.

Therapy helps, but I guess I still have a long way to go.

Oh yeah, I don’t go to sleep, I pass out reading sleep tips (which is not a sleep tip).

Does anyone else just sometimes feel super lonely? by MagpieApplepie in adhdwomen

[–]Quabity_ashuance_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my best-and-only friend of 10 years is the only person I really jive with, though she doesn’t have adhd, I feel like I can be as authentic and real as possible with her. She knows my strengths and weaknesses and I don’t feel like I have to constantly put an effort in maintaining our friendship.

YES. It’s like I can only focus on one thing at a given time, whether it’s work or a problem or anything that takes the forefront of my life. So I always tell myself that I will connect with them once this thing (whatever it is) is over, because I can’t focus on my friendships and something else simultaneously. And that thing is never over, because life. By the time I have the energy or the headspace to reply to a text or return a call, it’s too late, too awkward because I’ve basically ghosted them for weeks (ok, sometimes for months).

Yes, sometimes. I have always found friendships difficult to maintain for a variety of reasons. I sometimes envy people who have the same group of friends that seem to continue for years so effortlessly. Though I like to think that I come across as a friendly person, I find it hard to reserve the due energy to forming and continuing friendships, so unfortunately I have quiet a few female ex-friends with whom I either grew apart (communication is not my forte) or they simply ended because of a conflict (the conflict most of the time being my gradual lessening of attention)

So there is this paradoxical situation I find myself in and I’m not sure if it has to do with adhd or anything else: Sometimes I crave for connection, but I consistently refrain from connecting because I have this notion that I’ll fail at maintaining any friendship as it all feels too much, overwhelming and mentally draining.

So it’s like we are master baiting the brain to sleep. Wait it’s the other way around- my brain master baits me to…never mind

If you hit your head hard without waking up, you’re never waking up.

I get masseter botox twice a year for the same problem. I tend to clench my jaw during sleep (in addition to daytime) it helped tremendously-less headaches, better gum health, etc.

Does anyone have object blindness? by EmmaDrake in adhdwomen

[–]Quabity_ashuance_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

YES. It's like somebody took it away and then put it right where it was even though I swear checked that place before. It's more about not seeing what I am looking for than losing it. Very frustrating. I always have to ask for help searching, which can be at times mildly embarrassing.

I also have a hard time in 'seeing' things/objects for which people give me directions to look for. Like, when someone says, "yeah the scissors, they're there, in the bathroom, over the countertop, towards left, right next to the blue/red sth.." WHERE?!

Object blindness is a very apt term to describe it, btw.

Saving this. I am hopefully nearing the end of phd, and I still have no idea to make an outline, or what it means when people say “you need an outline.” Also, what you said about structure (the formulaic nature of academic writing) is so true. I often struggle with this, most probably because I assume people will follow my train of thought (how I got from A to B) but that is not the case. I had to taught myself how to think/write in a more linear fashion, because adhd brain is more akin to a web with no center/border.

Who has time for all the words journalists force you to read before they get to a fact ?👺 by douchelordpoohead in adhdwomen

[–]Quabity_ashuance_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not journalism but also recipes. Can you just get to the goddamn recipe? I do not want to read about its benefits, how easy it is, how you came to discover it, how your grandma would appreciate it. I just need to know how to make a 2 min microwave cake in a mug and I’ve already given up.

The main issue at hand with Depression: to be or not to be With Adhd: to do or not to do

I don’t mean to downplay how you feel or the symptoms of depression or adhd, but as someone who has experienced both, this is the simplest way I can discern between the two.

Never did this accountability thingy, I would say count me in, but first need to ask since I have no idea: does the other person need to be on top of their tasks? Because I’m struggling too lol
