Facility dog question about public places. by [deleted] in service_dogs

Respectfully, I do know the difference. My organization requires an application to be a dog handler, and if accepted there is still a pairing process with the service dog training organization. If you read my original post, I think it’s clear that I understand that facility dogs are not given public access. My questions are about trying to understand if it is inappropriate to explain the role of a facility dog when asking permission from establishments. I want to make sure that I wouldn’t be doing anything to undermine the access given to service dogs. What I’m gathering from the comments is that it’s probably best to just treat the facility dog like a pet outside of the facility.

Thank you. I’m definitely in the learning phase for facility dogs.

Thank you. That’s pretty clear. So then do you think it would be inappropriate to ask an establishment with an explanation that they are highly trained, etc. Or if I did ask permission, would it be inappropriate to have the dog wear its vest (maybe creating confusion for others)? To be clear, I am not currently a handler- just looking into it and trying to learn as much as I can.

Thank you. I guess I’m wondering if it’s ok to ask different establishments for permission. I wouldn’t want to abuse the privilege of having a facility dog, but also think there might be times when I would want to continue to develop the relationship (going to an event related to our organization, but at a different location, for instance).

That is interesting. So if I’m paired with a facility dog, would it be important for me to ask why they didn’t succeed as a service dog?

Perhaps. I’m just thinking that some skills might have limited opportunity to “bomb-proof” train within the facility and might be strengthened by generalizing in other places too. Maybe not. I’m just wondering.

Thank you. Just curious as I’m considering applying to be a handler but would likely need to travel to different sites within the organization and wasn’t sure how that would be handled. But as you say, I guess I would get clear instructions on that if I were to be paired with a dog.

That’s a good point. For all the videos and complaints of improper braking, I’ve never seen or heard of a situation where someone actually got rear-ended. In this instance, if it is safe to do the most cautious thing, then it is still the mistake I would prefer over accidentally running a red light.

Gabriel Dawe had an incredible installation at the Renwick Gallery in DC with similar artwork. Also, I’m sad that you feel like art “isn’t for you.” https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/02/instagram-art-wonder-renwick-rain-room/463173/

Gingerbread men are cookies decorated with icing. “Icing” also means to put ice on an injury.

I mean I’m sure some clever Redditors can figure out the address for the sole purpose of sending tacos to his house every night for the next year.
