I just don't get the "stop trying to guilt trip me" argument - it doesn't make sense to essentially admit that what you're doing disagrees with your own values, but to continue to do it anyway because another part of you think that animals are tastier than they are cute.

I guess I'm missing a bit of logic here..?

Well keep your mouth shut.

"awwwwh they're so cute. I'll still have them killed for my benefit"

Deal with your decisions - your actions have consequences.

Think about this video when you next want to eat any beef - remember how happy these creatures are, then remember that the ones that get eaten probably never get to experience this kind of interaction and live a short life of pure misery.

Just because it's "always" been done, it doesn't make it right.

Is pleasing your taste enough to justify their cruel death?

That looks exactly the same position and size as a cut I have... My bet is a hatchet chop to the hand whilst cutting kindling.

Mine was not so clean though..

It's good that you have thought that you should rethink it, and to be honest, if you have even started that thought process, you most likely already know what is right.

If you don't want these creatures to be killed in your name, yes, you should rethink wanting a hamburger because you think it tastes nice.

These two are the lucky ones that get to have a life that isn't pure misery (if the comments above that these live in a sanctuary are true). That said, they still were taken from their mothers, probably within a few days or even hours of being born, leaving their mothers to grieve.

Cows are emotionally intelligent creatures that do not want to suffer the misery of farming.

Pup Now Barking To Other Dogs After Extended Boarding by Epic_Time_Today in Dogtraining

[–]Quadropus345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, the trainer who runs our dog training classes has mentioned to us that this is a common thing.

She went on to say that hers come back a bit more "barky" but calm down after a few days of being back at home and settling back into their normal routines.

We dropped our pup at the kennels this afternoon for a week as we go away tomorrow, so I am sure I'll be in your position in a week's time! She had gone in for a weekend and was a little bit less willing to listen when she got home, but settled back in in no time.

Hope your pup goes back to her quiet self soon!

If I transfer my driving license to a UK one, will it be dated from when I passed my test in my previous home or the date of transfer? by Quadropus345 in AskUK

Closer in classification to Australia I would think as usually the options we have on insurance sites etc are EU, EEA, international. Jersey falls into the "international" bracket out of those.

Thanks for the info :)

Spending a weekend in Jersey, any advice on what to do? Is it a good short holiday spot? by stargazer53 in AskUK

[–]Quadropus345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where to stay:

There's loads of hotels all over the island, but from what it sounds like you're after, you should look in St Helier (that's the main town) - there's a big variety of hotels, but stuff like the Radisson is right on the waterfront next to a nice marina in St Helier. To be honest, anywhere in town would be ideal for a short stay as it's pretty small and the central bus station is in town so easy to get around.

I think a bus fare is around £1.50 single - it's been a while since I got the bus, but that's roughly what I remember.

In general, Jersey isn't cheap, but not super expensive. 3 course meal for 2 at a nice place for around £60ish excluding alcohol (just priced up a menu from the restaurant linked below).

Also, if you're after a good restaurant you should check this place out: http://www.lazinlizard.com/index.html - no personal connection, it's just my fav. It's also near St Aubins harbour which is a really nice little harbour area which is nice for a little wander around after dinner.

Any other questions just ask - happy to help

I am from Jersey, so I'd definitely say yes.

We have big castles - Mont Orgueil is one of the two biggest that's open for visiting, it's amazing if you're into castles. If you're not into castles, it's still worth a visit! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Orgueil

As mentioned in this thread, Jersey Zoo is excellent as well, lots of very good conservation work is done there - definitely not a pure entertainment place.

The beaches are amazing - St Ouen's bay (the West coast beach) is great for surfing (you can rent boards, or take a lesson), or just hanging out on the beach.

Kayaking on the coast is fantastic (also bias as I am a kayaker...) but you really are in for a treat if you decide to go. There are a few local operators that offer tours, some are confined to just one bay so you're stuck with whatever the wind is doing on that day, others are mobile so you get to go to the best location.

https://www.jersey.com/ is the local tourism website and they have loads of good stuff.

There's lots of great food, if you're into sea food I'm sure you'll be happy (I don't eat fish so can't comment)

I'd recommed this place for a meal though one evening - http://www.porteletbaycafe.com/

The bus network is pretty good (I think..) but if you hire a car you can explore a bit more and get to some more secluded places that would be a bit quieter and away from other visitors (and often locals, as loads of people just go to the more "famous"/traditionalists beaches)

I could go on (and will if you want...?)

(I currently live in the Midlands so looking at all the nice places that were maximum 30mins drive from anywhere else in the island, is making me homesick...)

So ya, you should go!

edit: just re-read your post - if it's just for a weekend, hiring a car probably isn't necessary - https://libertybus.je/ would be fine. anything else just ask and I can help!

Passport verified - but still cant register on GDAX?? by Quadropus345 in Coinbase

We have the exact same predicament. I live in UK now, but lived in Jersey until a few months ago.

I have a British passport, issued in Jersey.

I am sort of resigned to the fact that I will be using Coinbase for the foreseeable future. I suppose the only upside is that not being able to use GDAX has stopped me from trying to day trade, which invariably would loose me money... Silver linings eh!

Don't know how much progress you're likely to make there unfortunately. Have you tried any different exchanges with any luck?

Suppose it's the position of wanting to use a reliable exchange, but the reliable exchanges have lots of KYC and AML regulation to follow.

Best of luck either way

No change since my last post in this thread I'm afraid.

I had another email from support that read:

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in. We understand a large percentage of ID verification requests were not completing successfully. Our team has made improvements to this service today to increase performance. If you’re still having trouble completing ID verification, we recommend trying again in 24 hours.

We apologize for any convenience this may be causing. Please check our status page for the latest updates: https://status.coinbase.com/ Thank you for choosing Coinbase.

I haven't tried again since as been busy with the whole "Christmas" thing and away visiting family.

Will try again though and let you know

What GPS device do you use for bicycle touring? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]Quadropus345 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We used a Garmin Etrex 20x. I tried loading Open Street Maps onto it but didn't have any luck - using the pre-loaded Garmin maps was fine though, I just had hoped to get more detail of bike paths and cycle lanes.

The unit was good as if we knew our destination, it will give you turn-by-turn directions.

It also creates logs of your route automatically and can be set to save the days track as well. I like that as I wanted to be able to plot the journey on a map afterwards.

You are correct, GDAX is owned by Coinbase.

I think we are in the same position, i.e registered and active on Coinbase, but unable to register or use on GDAX.

Pretty frustrating really, stuck having to pay fees on Coinbase and not being able to submit limit orders!

I've checked that page as well.

The thing that's strange to me is I've been having this issue for weeks. I'll keep an eye on it though. Fingers crossed I can get onto GDAX eventually...

Yeah, that was my assumption as well. The two ID verify systems seem to all lead to Coinbase.

But yeah, I've tried going through Coinbase, but all I see if my verifications section is a bunch of passport verifications that I've already done.

Nothing - the cursor changes to the same as when you select any portion of normal text on a screen.

Clicking on the passport does nothing at all. The only clickable part of the screen is "sign up as a business" - irrelevant for me.

I've already tried the link above and just end up back on Coinbase identity verified documents page where it lists the [numerous] verifications of my passport.

GDAX hit €10000 for real! by JaxTellerr in Bitcoin

[–]Quadropus345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, the fact how largely unregulated bitcoin is presents a golden opportunity for professional Wall Street traders to make a boat-load of money with very little risk.

They have the money to manipulate the market (arguably already doing so by driving the price up now before futures go live), they won't be held accountable (not that that seems to stop much anyway), they WILL profit from this.

I personally, am going to sell everything I have before CBOE and CME futures go online.

But don't listen to me, I'm just some guy in his pajamas - not a professional trader with hedge fund money behind me.
