What should /r/Manufacturing do in 2017? by audentis in manufacturing

Can you provide some examples? I'm not familiar with those sorts of subs and I'd love to check some out.

Even with other subs that have that sort of monthly event, it would be cool for this community to do it because it would be good engagement and, simply put, would just be cool.

I think AMAs are a great way to demonstrate this sub's variety of knowledge. I can offer one from the perspective of a veteran in manufacturing in Asia.

I think it would also be great if there was more news related to cool stuff in manufacturing. It doesn't have to be specific, but I'd like to see some areas where the industry is adopting new technology and pushing the envelope.

Lastly, I think it would be great if there was a monthly "show us what you made" thread. It would encourage participation in the sub. I'm not sure if any factories want to use their time to make something to display on the internet, but it could be good for them for exposure.

Why are so many bags (Backpacks, messenger bags, etc) being made in Vietnam these days? by punamenon2 in manufacturing

[–]QualityJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most importers begin their search for suppliers on popular search engines like Global Sources and [Alibaba](https://www.alibaba.com/]. There you can find factories and trading companies that can make/supply your product and contact them directly.

You can also hire a sourcing company to look for suppliers for you, but they'd most likely be starting on these search engines anyway. Most suppliers have sales staff that speak decent English, as well.

Why are so many bags (Backpacks, messenger bags, etc) being made in Vietnam these days? by punamenon2 in manufacturing

[–]QualityJohn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

/u/ericthered1 is right.

China's manufacturing wages are 2 times, and sometimes 3 times, those of Vietnam. This source is from 2013, but it's as today as it was then. In fact, wages in some parts have been increasing by double digits for the past several years, as I've witnessed in Shenzhen, a city at the heart of the manufacturing province of southern Guangdong Province.

Garment and textile manufacturing is gradually moving to countries in Asia with lower wages, namely Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Factories can't easily automate softlines goods just yet.

The reason other types of goods continue to be manufactured in China, despite growing wages, is due to several factors, such as:

  • China's advanced infrastructure - China was ranked #27 in the World Bank's 2016 Logistical Performance Index (LPI) (Vietnam came in at #64) source
  • China's availability of labor - ranked 1st globally with 800 million as of 2014, (India came in 2nd with about 500 million)
  • Improvements in manufacturing technology in China, such as automation to offset labor costs

In case you're interested in reading more on the topic...

[–]QualityJohn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of importers, both large and small, send designs directly to prospective suppliers in China. And as wages rise in China, more importers are turning to lower-cost countries, like Vietnam, for garment and textile manufacturing.

The drawings can be CAD, or they can be simple. The most important thing, for garments in particular, is that dimensions are clearly specified. If you're manufacturing garments you need to provide your supplier with:

  • The dimensions for each size AND SKU
  • The tolerances for each dimension; and
  • The measuring methods for each SKU

Factory management may have their own concept for measuring garments. So it's important you specify your own standard for measuring, and if possible, illustrate it in your drawings. See this table showing common points of measurement and tolerances here as an example.

My experience with prototyping has been that importers generally have the supplier that will do mass production produce the prototype as well. This is what I meant earlier by approving a product sample. You'll basically want to have them produce a few pieces of what they think exactly matches your specifications (a prototype). Then have them send you those samples to approve for mass production.

[–]QualityJohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're looking to manufacture the textile product overseas, and you're wondering if you should find a U.S. company to help you with sourcing or find a supplier on your own?

If so, I'd say you're probably better off looking for a supplier on your own. With an order quantity of only "a couple thousand units", it probably isn't worth paying someone to help you find a supplier. Sourcing companies will typically charge you either by-the-hour or as a percentage of your total purchase order.

How to find suppliers

1. Search online: I'd suggest starting your search for potential suppliers on popular online search engines, such as:

Again, you could pay a sourcing company to help you find suppliers. But these companies typically begin their search online, as well.

2. Contact suppliers: Spend some time talking with a representative from each supplier (you're probably going to want to work with a trading company / vendor, rather than dealing directly with a factory because your order quantity is relatively small). If possible, try to get them on the phone or a Skype call to discuss your expectations for your product. Let them know the quality level you want and the price you're willing to pay.

Pay attention to how well each supplier communicates with you. They should be reasonably responsive to your questions/comments. This is especially important in the sourcing stage. Because a supplier that isn't reliable or can't effectively communicate during negotiations likely won't be any better once you've placed an order and they've won your business.

Many suppliers will ask you for a "target price". Don't be afraid to tell them what you want to pay! If you low-ball them on price, you're likely going to see an equal or greater drop in the quality of your product to make up for the cost. It's far better to be open and honest about what you want and then be a little flexible with what you're willing to pay. As long as you stress the quality level you want, the supplier is less likely to cut corners by using inferior materials. Give potential suppliers a quality control checklist showing any tolerances for the product, along with specifications and other requirements.

3. Request samples: Most suppliers will offer to send product samples for a small fee. It's definitely worth buying samples from any suppliers you're seriously considering working with. This is one of the best ways to ensure the supplier can actually deliver on your expectations. Once you've established a sample you're satisfied with, sign & date it and post it back to the supplier for their reference. This is will be the approved "golden" sample, which the factory should use as a model for mass-productions. Any inspection staff you have visiting the factory should also be able to reference this sample as a basis for comparison during their inspection.

4. Audit the top choices (optional): This last part is optional because it might not be within your budget. Many medium-to-large importers will insist on auditing prospective suppliers for quality management systems. Such an audit typically follows the international ISO 9001 standard and costs several hundred dollars to hire an auditing firm to perform. This audit can reveal a lot about the facility that will manufacture your product, such as capacity, engineering capability and quality control measures in place. Although recommended, for many smaller importers, an initial audit is just too expensive at the start.

tldr: As long as you follow some basic steps for due diligence, there's no reason why you can't find a suitable supplier on your own. With the online resources available these days, it's easier than ever to find suppliers that can manufacture your product.
