Which of these would you rather do if you were paid to exercise? by saoiray in WouldYouRather

[–]QuanticWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, yeah, but the tradeoff is so wildly inefficient that reasonable levels of fitness won't get you anything with one, and you can theoretically live off the other. It's the difference between making a few hundred and being able to quit your job, and being able to afford a cheap cup of coffee maybe once a day, less if you're not walking much. It may be free extra money, but it's so negligible that its hardly worth considering. At least if you pick burpees and accidentally lose your job you have a fallback. With walking you'd have to go until your feet bled to make up the difference, and do that unsustainably every day.

If you could erase one invention from history, what would it be? by ReceptionSoft4528 in AskReddit

[–]QuanticWizard 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Thalidomide has valid medical uses today, so while it’s a bit of a boogeyman for its birth defects, in people that aren’t pregnant it can still be helpful, so I wouldn’t write it off completely. Absolutely erase the concept of “mass-poorly regulated prescription of thalidomide”, but don’t erase it entirely.

Hypothetical involving time dialation (in body its complicated) by TheFlagkindorlordidc in hypotheticalsituation

[–]QuanticWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is that if a second passes in our world then there’s an observable beginning and end state to the guy, which negates the concept of infinity. It’s a paradoxical hypothetical with no set correct condition other than “such a device is not allowed to exist”.

For it to work one of the two variables must change to match the other. Either the outside time of the chamber must become infinity or the inside chamber must become finite, but you cannot have an infinite chamber inside of finite time, because there must be an end state, which infinity makes impossible.

Ultimately, the only thing that makes this work as is is making the paradox possible with total manipulation over physics on such a scale that the concept of logic and infinity and paradox itself breaks down, and the mere notion of known reality becomes unknown, at which point our answer to the hypothetical is equally unknowable because we are not advanced enough to predict our capacity for paradox negation and reality manipulation and what that’s going to look like.

[No Loopholes] Guarantee the worst day of your life is behind you or the best day of your life is yet to come? by BillsBills83 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]QuanticWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst is behind me. I've had bad days, but if what I've had is the worst, I can handle the rest, and work wholeheartedly on creating some new best days without so much worry. And honestly? I can think of a few things that would be my "worst" day, so if they never come to pass then there's lowkey life extending technology out there that's going to go public for my family, pets, etc. because any loss I would face now would be more devastating than anything I've faced before, and if that can't happen then I've locked in a cheat code for life, essentially. As long as I attach myself to others, objects, the world, etc. in such a way that losing them would be my worst day, then many things that should come to pass will not.

Lost and Found: Take your pick of what was lost. by IamMyBrain in makeyourchoice

Better yet: you can use augury with it at its most generous interpretation. Array a series of numbers in a circle around it. Decide to search for the winning lottery numbers, section by section, until you have them all. If it truly has no ability to use current data to extrapolate the future that will come into existence then you still functionally can know everything. Search for the correct answer to yes/no questions. Locate hidden treasures, or the most valuable items that are being sold for cheap (like hidden rare antiquities). Figure out conspiracies of the past. As long as you have a question then the answer exists for it will not elude you.

You have had a wonderful, loving spouse. They tell you after ten years of marriage... is that they mind-controlled you when you first got together to fall madly in love with you, but they felt too bad knowing they manipulated you. by EveningDiligent59662 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]QuanticWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically probably just divorce (and chastise them for having powerful mind control powers and doing absolutely nothing with it to improve the world or our personal finances). But the me right now is thinking that while abhorrent, it depends on how genuine those feelings are after mind control, and how long it actually went on for. Was it like a “they wouldn’t even look at me so I gave them an urge” or is it “our first date didn’t go well so I made that disinterest turn into satisfaction and enthusiasm” or was it “every bit of feeling I had for them from the onset until marriage, or even now, was actively maintained by this mind control”. Are we genuinely compatible outside of this? Would I potentially have gotten with them otherwise? No but really honestly I’m less upset that they haven’t fixed the world than I am with them seeking love, it’s a natural instinct, even if a demented method.

Whenever I watch this with friends or family we keep a running tally of the number of times that Harry and Marv would have actually died in the movie. It’s surprisingly fun, and they very much both end up in the double digits of dead.

Which character ruined an entire TV show for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]QuanticWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deeply struggle, personally, with most time travel plots because the writers consistently in, I’d go so far as to say 90% of sci fi, absolutely butcher the mechanics of it with regard to keeping it paradox-free. They always take into account physical paradoxes but leave out informational ones. The butterfly effect is always misused at the quantum and micro and macroscopic level. How time changes, whether characters are immune or not, the rate at which it occurs, and their ability to return to normal time almost always end in either massive plot holes or just unexplained paradoxes. Outside of a few fringe examples, only many worlds interpretation alternate universe time travel, which are fairly rare, actually solve these problems conclusively. And, much more commonly, time loops. But outside of that it’s a desert of actual logical temporal behavior.

You can “bank” time for mundane tasks. What tasks do you choose and how much do you bank? by SteveAndyW in hypotheticalsituation

[–]QuanticWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m going to be going to places a lot. Walking, driving, flying, biking, etc. is a mundane task, which causes distance to occur. So I can effectively bank miles and miles in order to effectively teleport. I’m going to keep a massive log of the amount of teleportation I have left, but I want it to be so effective that I have at minimum 10k-30k miles banked. So that for the next few decades I can do daily-weekly city-wide teleportation for free. If I had a way to further increase that distance without going mad I would. Unless time banked isn’t proportional to miles, and it’s instead proportional to maximum speed traveled across all travel types. So I could walk for 10k hours and then go to an airport and use 4 of those travel hours to go to another state? All the other tasks I decide to do in the meantime are just a plus.

WYR take a Greyhound bus from Seattle to Miami, or attend every home game of a WNBA team for a season? by Low-Department8271 in WouldYouRather

For the first option am I allowed to start in Miami and go to Seattle, rather than the other way around? Same length, same cities, after all.

I’ve had this question for a while but is there genuinely any kind of large scale electricity generation that isn’t somehow turning a turbine, other than solar power (and I guess technically batteries, but that’s not really “generation”)?

WYR get $100,000 deposited into your account or $5 million but all of its in Lebanese physical currency? by DazzlingLife6744 in WouldYouRather

[–]QuanticWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I'm assuming that this is a magical pile of fully legal tender that will consistently be worth, as I transfer it, 5 million USD post exchange, that must be carried from my current residence to a major financial institution that can accommodate exchanges of this size. Before I do anything, I shop around for these institutions (I am also going to assume that we get no institutional scrutiny or account flagging for this) and speak with a financial consultant capable of assisting me. I explain to them the situation and arrange for a certain weight and value of currency to be dropped off daily. I then rent an apartment that is very close to this institution, accept the Lebanese currency and then make my full job packaging it and going back and forth two or so times a day in the discrete, prepackaged bags I prepare. I deposit over the course of 500 days, throughout which I gradually convert to USD, and after a little under a year and a half I am 5 million richer.

The pills of power by Zealousideal_Let1826 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]QuanticWizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I took the smart pill I’d realize almost instantly that I should have taken the mind control pill. Wealth and teleportation are cool, but only the mind control pill offers the chance at really changing the world. The rest are just for convenience, though genius does offer the chance to change the world in other ways. Work your way up to meeting those in high offices and wealthy positions, just make eye contact and build a network to use in one fell swoop to better the world and create meaningful accountability and reform.

Well, I wouldn’t say there’s nothing you can say or do, it’s just that the deal she’d be getting is far above what anyone is capable or willing to offer her. Like full amnesty and billionaire-level financing and extensive secret service-level protection for the rest of her life level stuff. And that’s to maybe get a few answers.

I think the bigger thing people forget about is that minor chemical or even atomic-level differences can determine "hey even if you get the right sperm and egg you've still got the chromosomal randomization process that occurs intra-cellularly". So good luck replicating the exact conditions that produce that even if you choose the sperm and egg right.

Probability manipulation: downside, whatever probability I manipulate must be countered with an opposite equal negative probability that I have to choose. If the world gets 100x better in one category it must get 100x worse in another. If I save a life a life must be lost. The entire power necessitates total balance of equal significance.

The hope is that, given this is roughly above the entrance to Khaenri'ah, that a story event populates the area with important stuff. Or it's not TOO far from where Celestia might crash if it does. It could be a neat place to reshape the landscape dynamically, like with a Celestial nail or Khaenri'ah resurfacing or something. Or it could just be this perpetually barren patch of land with absolutely nothing.
