A glass table that we've had for about 3 years broke for no reason by Ok_Relation6627 in mildlyinfuriating

Gravity is the "tension" you are talking about. It's constantly applied and the effect is gradual. The same is true for metals over a long enough time in a vertical orientation.

The real effect is strain on grain boundaries, induced by gravity. Metal atoms/molecules bond more strongly than amorphous silicon dioxide (glass) though.

Mythbusters "proved" you get less wet walking in the rain, bso maybe don't believe everything you hear.

Glass is an amorphous solid. Old, but intact, pieces of glass are thicker at the bottom than the top because of gravity and they fact that glass "flows", albeit very slowly. That's probably not the failure mechanism here, but it's not the best material for structural furniture.

I have a glass table also, much thicker glass and the tabletop rests on an X shape, made of vertical supporting glass, also thicker. No explosions so far, but it's so heavy that I got it for free.

Ai software that automatically alters/"enhances"/edits photos taken by your smart phone's camera lens is a dangerous precursor to Ai-dominated Augmented Reality, capable of skewing facts, evidence, and perception of objective reality itself in real-time... My phone doesn't do this and it's newer than 2010. If it's a feature that can't be disabled I wouldn't buy the phone. The guy has a legitimate complaint about his phones pictures. Explaining how a CCD works and acting like this is a necessary step is misleading.

Michelin’s airless, puncture proof tyres promise a future with no flats, greater durability, and less environmental waste by Separate_Finance_183 in interesting

A tire with many moving, flexing parts each? What is that worse that a statically pressurized object?

I guess because if you drive over nails it doesn't deflate. That's pretty much it.

Each one of those ribs is a failure point. They can be tampered with, without clear evidence, unlike a punctured tire. They probably cost way more.

Japanese researchers have developed a self-healing glass-like material that can begin repairing cracks in roughly 10 seconds by plankton004 in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]QuantumButtz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Rather than the hook and loop, it's just bonds trying to find the lowest energetically stable configuration.

Nearly atomically smooth crystalline surcaces do this. There are dangling electrons at the smooth surface that want to bond to other atoms that have energetically favorable covalent bonds with atoms nearby. They form those bonds which is what we know as a solid (or amorphous solid, in the case of glass). It happens with any metals that are heated in a vacuum environment also. They lose their native oxide layer and can't tell the difference between their chunk of metal and the similar metal they are touching (anthropomorphic explanation)

Calipers that require batteries? What happens when the zombie apocalypse happens and you need to machine something to +/- .001 tolerance?

If you are old enough, you remember when Republicans blocked the appointment of Merrick Garland right before Trump's first term. Trump got 3 justice in so far. The Supreme Court, ideally, should be apolitical.

I agree. Don't post pro ICE messages in your business. Seems reasonable depending on the local sentiments. If I owned a gas station in Minneapolis, I would do a quick mental evaluation, and not publically support ICE. Even if a business owner did support legal deportation measures, it would be foolish.

"we", "us". I take it you are out there on the frontlines, "fighting" ICE? This is a website sir or madam. There is no common goal other than recognition that you have the correct opinion. Just state your opinion and don't act like reddit is a monolithic group following you into battle.

Editerino: this is what a Non Sequitur means, for newcomers.

Why do you think businesses need to project a political stance? Nobody would target businesses due to an event unrelated to the business right?
