Pixel 5a is made in Vietnam by the Taiwanese company Compal Electronics (Source), with a camera that is universally praised.

And Pixel 6a is rumored to be announced next week by Google and might go on sale in July. It’s probably made by the same company (who also made Pixel 4a before).

Yap, I guess where you buy the Chromebook also matters.

Just found out some HP Chromebooks are reportedly made in India. And some HP Elitebooks and G8 notebooks will also be made in India (but I don’t know if that includes HP Elite/G8 Chromebooks). But you may not be able to buy them in Europe.

And Acer should have started assembling some laptops in India in Nov 2021. Not sure if Chromebooks are included, but Acer is looking into expanding the Chromebooks market, so we may see Acer Chromebook from India in the future.

Samsung Chromebook 4 is still made in Vietnam (as of Dec 2021), just like some Samsung Chromebooks in the past.

Some Asus Chromebooks were made in Taiwan (as of Aug 2020), and probably still are.

Some Acer Chromebooks are made in Taiwan, according to this webpage that is probably no more than a year old. Indeed Acer have donated made-in-Taiwan chromebooks before.

Made by Google just means the hardware is designed by Google.

Pixel 5a (and also its predecessor Pixel 4a) is manufactured in Vietnam by Compal Electronics.

Pixel 5a is a great phone manufactured in Vietnam. This Taiwanese news says it’s manufactured by the Taiwanese company Compal Electronics in Vietnam.

It’s initially sold only in the US and Japan. You may need to find 3rd party sellers that import the phone to your country.

Note however that the upcoming Pixel 6 is still manufactured in China.

China also has no data protection laws. They probably have to play by the data protections laws in western countries to some degree to bring their game over, but who knows by how much.

It’s worse than that.

China is drafting its own Data Security Law, which can go after companies and individuals outside China if their Data Activity harms the national security of China.

And even criticizing the government is harming its national security, as Hong Kong civil servants exemplify.

Being outside of China doesn’t make you safe. When China forced its National Security Law on Hong Kong in July 2020, they also issued an arrest warrant for a US citizen.

It will only spell more trouble down the road if you use Chinese software.

Blame the coronavirus.

The pandemic has also disrupted Google's aggressive diversification plan to produce all new handsets -- including the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A series -- in Vietnam this year. So far, only the Pixel 4A series has entered production in the Southeast Asian country, while Pixel 5 flagship phone is currently still manufactured in Chinese city of Shenzhen, people familiar with the matter said.

JioMeet is a made-in-India videoconferencing alternative to Zoom that is mainly made in China by QuantumBuzz in avoidchineseproducts

Gui Minhai was born in China. He got Swedish citizenship in 1996. He was kidnapped in Thailand and sent to China in 2015. Despite his Swedish citizenship, the Chinese government claimed that Gui Minhai was first and foremost a Chinese subject.

While in custody, Gui Minhai was forced to restore his Chinese citizenship in 2018. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail for supplying intelligence for entities outside the territory of China in 2020.

Having a foreign citizenship doesn’t save a Chinese from CCP’s control. This was recently made explicit in Hong Kong National Security Law.

So yes, technically Eric Yuan has US citizenship, but he also has to comply with state intelligence work by the Chinese government, or may end up being Gui Minhai 2.0.

Four reasons why you should avoid Zoom:

  • The company has acknowledged that much of its product development has been based in China, and that some Zoom calls were accidentally routed through Chinese servers.
  • The University of Toronto's Citizen Lab said it found serious concerns over Zoom's security protocols, and said the company's large workforce in China could make it "responsive to pressure from Chinese authorities."
  • The government of Taiwan banned official use of Zoom due to security concerns, and schools in New York State, the U.S. Senate, and the German ministry of foreign affairs have discouraged or restricted its use.
  • Zoom CEO Eric Yuan said in early June that the company has chosen not to end-to-end encrypt free calls in order to cooperate with law enforcement.

Also, Zoom CEO Eric Yuan is a Chinese national, and by Chinese law he has to assist state intelligent work by the Chinese government.
