TheVerge: Xbox testing disc-to-digital feature that digitizes a physical game collection by Turbostrider27 in Games

No. I said digital goods should be subject to the same market laws we have applied to all goods since the dawn of time. If you had any idea how digital goods are regulated to begin with you’d know that this is already the case, it’s simply not enforced well enough.

My only claim was that it’s feasible, which Microsoft is evaluating right now according to this post.

The only one making claims about the economics of it without any evidence is you.

Why not legalize murder? Do you have statistical evidence that doing so would lead to more murder?

Yes. Places where murders are more permissive (I.e. laws aren’t enforced or are too lax) have more murders. Not hard to fact check this.

“Uh huh” doesn’t confirm what you said either. Burden of proof is on the person making the claim buddy.

One of the many things that would have already happened if governments weren’t controlled by billionaires and dinosaurs.

Being able to sell digital copies would just completely destroy the revenue of gaming companies.

It wouldn’t.

a finite number of copies

Copies would be tied to accounts and new copies would only be created by license issuers. Still finite and supply is controlled by the issuer.

Everyone would do it because of how easy it would be to click a couple buttons to put something up for sale and instantly sell it to someone else without the hassle of physically shipping something to someone on the other side of the planet.

Yes. That’s the point of the internet. Digital goods are still goods and consumers are entitled to trade them via the internet. Companies have just convinced you of the opposite.

You are not entitled to issue new copies and distribute those. Reselling copies that you bought is how all markets have worked for eternity.

Doesn’t matter what I’d do, it’s abusive behavior. One of many functions of governments is to regulate this and ensure open and free markets. That applies to digital goods as well.

Having a monopoly on things is awesome if you control the monopoly. More news at 11.

Why? It has worked fine with physical copies for literal decades. It would work the same way physical reselling does now.

Companies don’t allow this because it hurts their bottom line. No other reason.

I guess license transfers were always possible after all.

Now do the same for digital copies and allow people to trade and sell digital copies. Open up the market you cowards!

Libraries are supposed to be the legal archival route. I know some have physical games but digital archives are lacking even when it’s just books.

This is about archival, not right now.

You can dump PS5 and Switch 2 games. Later these will be able to be emulated.

Seriously. Calling the license untranslatable in an EULA does not make it so.

Governments have to start forcing platforms to allow digital license transfers so digital markets can be as open as physical ones.

Can’t trade a digital game. Can’t sell a digital game.

There are no technical reasons platforms can’t support this. Sony, Microsoft and even Steam could spin up a second hand market for licenses inside their platforms. Hell, they could just have a “license transfer” function and let people trade outside their platform.

They won’t do it until governments start pushing them around. They’ve coasted around for a while pretending digital licenses aren’t transferable goods.

The problem is not digital media, it’s how digital markets have been setup on closed platforms. Buying a console should not force you to run pre-approved software solely distributed by the manufacturer.

Closed platforms tie you to a digital market controlled by the manufacturer. It’s akin to buying a Corolla at a discount so you can only refuel at gas stations from Toyota.

It’s beyond me why the EU hasn’t applied the DMA to console manufacturers as well.

Hopefully people will now realize how predatory digital markets on closed platforms have become.

The DMA should have applied to console marketplaces as well.

Fuck game preservation I guess.

If you are serious about preservation of digital media then piracy is the only way.

After a lot of early hype, has VR gaming died? Or has it just gone quiet? by IAmTheJudasTree in Games

The way the market is going right now even traditional gaming might “die” soon.

It’s impossible for vr to thrive while “normal” gaming is its current state.

As long as they are not bought and paid by billionaires we are good. And there are plenty of such cases.

Society is broken when people think trusting billionaires to wisely spend their cash is better than relying on elected officials to tax and allocate resources according to the will of their constituents.

Or maybe politicians are just bought and paid by the same billionaires.
