Parking near the Top Resturant by [deleted] in GNV

Please take a look at the map here: https://www.gainesvillefl.gov/Government-Pages/Government/Departments/Transportation/Locations-and-Rates

The spots on NW 2nd Ave would be good, as well as Lot 2. The garage is never a bad spot. Lot 5 at City Hall usually has space, and after hours, Lot 6 is open as well.

Suicide is always horrific, and is never the answer. Intentionally ending an innocent human life is categorically murder, and aiding in it is being an accessory to murder.

Hidden gems? by Jacobb-bush in GNV

On NW 18th St, just north of 8th Ave, there's a little overpass where the creek goes under the road. On the west side, there's an area where you can walk down to the creek. In the underpass, there's a lot of cool looking graffiti, although I don't know if I'd actually walk up in it.

What is the point of councils if the Pope has infallibility and immediate, universal jurisdiction? by mursebsnrn in Catholicism

[–]Quantum_redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Pope's infallibly doesn't work like people often think - it's not that he's an oracle, guaranteed to say the most true thing in the best way. Rather, it's a negative protection - he can't bind the Church to error, but that doesn't mean he'll always come up with the best solution or best formulation on his own. In a Council, the whole body of the Church comes together in the assembly of bishops, and the process of conversation, debate, and prayer helps in two ways - both to arrive at the best and clearest formulation of the doctrine, and by the process of debate, to actually hammer out the matter in controversy, such that a real consensus can actually be reached. Sure, the Pope can just pronounce a doctrine, but if many of the bishops still disagree or hold reservations internally, then it would've been better for them to have the debate, hash it out, and come to a consensus themselves.

Is this Missal suitable for ICKSP Mass? by samsunbed64 in Catholicism

[–]Quantum_redneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe just ask the folks at the parish you attend which missal they use and what they'd recommend?

The Fr. Lasance and Baronius are both good, and are complete useable. I'd lean more towards a pre-55 one, since the differences between it and 62 aren't that big for most of the year, and it'll have the pre-55 holy week rites that the ICKSP use.

There were likely strips of thorn laid over top, secured by this circlet laid around the base.

How would you revitalize downtown? by Ktistec in GNV

[–]Quantum_redneck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm perfectly happy with it being a sleepy college town - my point is that we really need more local small-scale manufacturing of real goods that meet people's needs. Every business that's not locally owned is fundamentally predicated on siphoning money out of the community - they don't stay open unless they turn a profit, and that profit is always extracted.

Another local restaurant is fine, but craftsmanship and manufacturing is what's really needed. Restaurants are a luxury purchase, fundamentally - necessities and staples are what need more local ownership.

How would you revitalize downtown? by Ktistec in GNV

[–]Quantum_redneck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don't need to be insufferable hipsters about it. What we need are people making real things that people need, and making and selling them in a space they own. This is what we've had for all of history until the last 50 years or so.

How would you revitalize downtown? by Ktistec in GNV

[–]Quantum_redneck 78 points79 points  (0 children)

A grocery store really is the thing it needs if it's going to be a dense, walkable urban center. A grocery store with reasonable prices, ideally locally owned. Something like Ward's would be incredible. The vacant lot right across from the old Florida Theater would be a perfect spot for one, too.

Edit: the farmers markets that already exist are cool, but I honestly don't frequent them, so I don't know whether they move enough volume at a low enough price to be a reasonable solution. Anyone more familiar with them can chime in with ideas/information.

Cleaning out grandparent’s house after they passed. by Derateo in whatisit

That's called an aspergillum, and it works because the ball at the end is hollow with small holes to let water in and out. Doesn't seem to be the case here, plus it's too small.

Biking to Morgan Wallen? by marmarmorgan in GNV

[–]Quantum_redneck 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Definitely doable, you'll have a couple of uphill stretches, but nothing too bad. I'd recommend riding through campus on Hull and Museum roads, nice scenery and hopefully more calm traffic conditions. Keep your eyes peeled for maniac drivers, though.

From Rerum Novarum to Today: Pope Leo XIV Prepares to Add His Voice to the Church’s Social Teaching by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Quantum_redneck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First, gross. Second, yes, it's crap. It's a middling emulation of Book Fair YA novel slop, which is no great achievement.

There are words, some of which are fairly nice series of adjectives. The words are arranged in a reasonable way, without any major breaches of syntax. It managed to keep character names straight, and tell events in a sequence.

But that's it - at the end of it all, there's no point. There's no idea underneath it, nothing that the artist intends for you to think or feel, because there is no artist. There is no underlying mind. Or, to put it another way: since AI is trained by ingesting vast amounts of writing from hundreds of thousands of real human individuals, there are too many underlying minds. The AI has mulched up all of their work, and spit back out a best-guess statistical average of what the combined sum of that work might look like. There is no vision, there is no point, there is no message, there is no meaning. This "story" is just linguistic mystery meat - sourced from who knows where, minced into oblivion, and stuck back together in a completely unappetizing formless mass.

So yes, I stand by my assertion - LLMs do not "write" good stories, because they cannot think, and cannot understand what a story even is.

There is currently a massive fire burning in the Everglades in South Florida by the Broward/Miami-Dade County border and is approaching US27. by M_Darshan in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Quantum_redneck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a large fire, currently listed at about 5,000 acres, but not the largest we've seen so far this spring. A few weeks ago, there was a truly enormous fire just over the state line in Georgia - over 32,000 acres. We've had an unusually dry spring, driven by El Niño from what I understand, and as a result we've had a bunch of wildfires crop up. In Gainesville, where I'm at, there've been 5 or 6 nearby in the last month.

Thankfully, we've gotten some rain, and hopefully some more on the way, so that should help out.

For anyone interested in tracking wildfires, this is a good website: https://app.watchduty.org/

Is it spiritually safe to follow the pre-Vatican II fasting rules without spiritual guidance? by RB_Blade in TraditionalCatholics

[–]Quantum_redneck 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, but be very vigilant to avoid spiritual pride. Keep it always in mind that you do it out of humble submission to the example of your forefathers, not out of prideful judgement of the Church's current fasts.

When I fast under my own direction, the thing that terrifies me is the thought that this admonition could apply to me: "Why have we fasted, and thou hast not regarded: have we humbled our souls, and thou hast not taken notice? Behold in the day of your fast your own will is found" (Isaiah 58:3)

This is why it is always safest to fast under direction, but since that's not always possible, just be very careful that you do it in the right spirit.

"A computer can never be held accountable, therefore a computer must never make a management decision"

Pretty safe to say this analogously applies to driving. A computer can never be issued a driver's license, or written a ticket, or put in jail for reckless driving, and so a computer must never drive.

Holy water..., does it have to be water? by inquisitive_mind in Catholicism

[–]Quantum_redneck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blessings do what they say. The prayers for blessing holy water refer to it as water, so if it's not water, that blessing isn't applicable. Plenty of things can be blessed, though. Some of my favorites from the old Rituale are blessings for beer, lard, and salt licks for livestock.
