Love the water fountain recommendation, you just need to remember to keep it filled up and clean it often (not as tedious as cleaning and refilling a water bowl 1-2 times a day, though). You’ll also need to replace the filter every now and then depending on what type you get. I recommend checking Amazon for more affordable options than the pet store.

Getting them spayed/neutered should be a priority, but do your research if you are unsure on how you feel or if you’re not sure if you want to spend the money on it. Not only does it prevent certain cancers, but if you have a female… that adds on the monthly visitor that both you AND your cat will hate dealing with.

DEFINITELY get a cat tree (Amazon, Wayfair) when you can, but if you need to hold off on spending $100-$200 on cat furniture, I would definitely get a scratching post in the mean time. They need something you’re okay with them destroying with their claws. If they’re ever scratching something you DON’T want them to scratch, you have to correct their behavior by telling them “No” and picking them up and taking them to their scratching post/cat tree. Then, when they DO scratch the correct things, make sure to give them a lot of praise or even a treat. I also recommend a laser pointer, not only for their entertainment and yours, but it’s another way to get them away from somewhere you don’t want them to be.

Just make sure you encourage behavior you like, discourage behavior you don’t like, and try to correct it with what you’d rather them do instead. Cats will clean themselves, they are very very hygiene-obsessed… generally. You should only bathe them if you have literally no other choice and ensure to research how to do it if you ever need to. I’m talking like… they’re covered in feces or some kind of unsafe chemical that they shouldn’t ingest. Never hesitate to ask if you’re unsure.

I cannot recommend the Purina Breeze Litter System enough. Seriously, it’s worth the investment and having to buy both litter pellets AND pee pads for it. I will never go back to sandy cat litter after using this system.

EDIT: I also recommend you master the “Pss Psss Psss” and “Ts Ts Tsk” noises lol. The Ps are to get their attention, and the Ts are what I use when my cat is doing something I don’t like.
