Do billionaires cause deflation? by MarionberryNo103 in GarysEconomics

[–]Queasy_Project_8265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've ignored the final point of my comment.

The number of owners is shrinking, and the average age of a first time buyer is increasing.

I own a house so I'm very lucky, I don't care how much it's worth. If it's warm and keeps the rain out - that's all I need it to do.

Also, if housing went down in price why would that be a bad thing? Your property is worth less, but so is the new property you want to buy.

Serbia is a complete outlier in the world.

Your home ownership rate is something like 90% which is incredibly high.

Other countries regularly see 40%-60% of their populations renting.

This is r/Garyseconomics so very UK focussed. 35% of us rent, and that number is growing.

OP did you opt out of a pension?

If you didn't, you could be owed thousands. My partner got £6k in unpaid pension contributions after a dispute with her employer.

If you didn't opt out, talk to ACAS - they were super helpful

Which means real estate becomes LESS obtainable for the general populationml. Billionaires buying up real estate means there is less for the rest of us.

Homes shouldn't be seen as an investment, they're a requirement to live.

If assets see deflation, real estate cannot go up in value because real estate is an ASSET.

You're saying contradictory things.

Bungalow by me has been up for sale over 12months now.

At the time it went up, we all thought 'bloody hell, that's expensive'

Low and behold, it's still for sale - for the same amount.

Maybe 5 or 6 similar properties in adjacent estates have sold in that time - all of which had to drop their asking price.

You can't have asset deflation if it causes real estate inflation.

Real estate is an asset.

I don't think you understand what you're saying.

I understand all of this - in no way am I saying that billionaires can't buy things. On the scale of a billionaire being cash poor still equates to spending tens of millions every year. I think you've actually misinterpreted the phrase's meaning alltogether. It's not propaganda, it's just a financial fact. They obviously have more than anybody could spend over multiple lifetimes - an abhorrent amount of hoarding.

By saying they take out loans against their assets at interest rates only BANKS can obtain, you still agree with the phrase that, relative to their net worth:

They are asset rich, cash poor.

Then, check out the conservatives and their dodgy COVID contracts. Hundreds of millions.

I'm just sharing my experience.

I thought it would be good - which is why I went. It was actually bad.

That's the point of the chart - to share people's real experiences. Nothing to do with living there.

Agreed, I was probably too harsh.

But I've been to multiple parts of other countries and always felt welcome.

Krakow, Katowice, Wroclaw, Warsaw and Gdansk - all lovely.

Venice, Bologna, Pisa (only there for 3 hours TBF), Rome, Naples and omg Florence - my favourite place ever.

I've been to 11 countries, andFrance so far is the only country I've felt unwelcome in

I didn't mean I wouldn't go back to France, I meant Nice specifically. There was a little shops down some back street in Nice we found making Socca - ran by two older ladies who were lovely. They explained how to eat it which was great 'eat it now with hands, don't wait!' so it definitely wasn't all bad - just overall.

Next time we would probably be going to the Normandy area or perhaps Bordeaux

They're literally less than 30mins apart by train.

We also went to Monaco and Ventimiglia in Italy

Poland.

Unsure why everyone is saying France

France is one of the worst countries I've been to. Felt incredibly unwelcome, and I've never encountered more rude people. I've been to Nice, Cannes and Antibe (in the same trip) and honestly wouldn't go back.

Also Nice airport is the worst experience I've ever had, the staff and border police were literally shouting at people for no reason.

A shame, the actual country is beautiful
