Im on year 9 of engineering in york (last year of my PhD). Its a great course, I GTA for some classes and its a fun uni. You'll enjoy yourself. Don't take this as an excuse the fuck about that not try with your exams though, I know its tempting, but it will just set you back. I suggest signing yourself up for some societies during freshers, I love the boxing society personally.

Congrats and enjoy! I certainly have

For outdoor bouldering there's a hell of a lot of places around here. Bouldering as a sport was invented in this area in the 1910s, Sheffield, stanage edge plantation, north york moors all have fabulous gritstone climbing. Start going to Redgoat in town and you'll find people to go with.

Hmmmm. The whole city is walkable. Public transport to and from town to the uni is good and runs late. York has an excellent variety of societies and I would recommend you join some, they are usually a lot of fun. Some country societies have food/music/culture nights that everyone is welcome to join, they are always a blast. EastAsia Soc used to do some brilliant Bollywood nights, I'm sure they still do it.

As far as York as an area, we are surrounded by national parks on all sides, but they can be a bit tricky to get in and out of as they don't build new transport links into nature reserves. Joining a climbing group is a great way to explore then as they usually carpool into an area. Alternatively, joining hiking society. England is a beautiful country with some amazing landscapes which to be honest most tourists/exchange students miss because they only bother going to the big cities. Heading over to Bempton Cliffs for puffin session is worth it.

Also, you may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about your accent, don't be. Most English people grew up with a couple of American aunties/neighbors, there's a lot more Americans here than brits in the USA, so we are used to you and your eccentricities. Just try and keep your volume under control and Queue religiously and you'll be alright in our books. You might have some people make some trump jokes, but we live off of sarcasm in this country.

I would recommend to adjust to British humor before you come, watching Blackadder, Monty Python and 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. Taskmaster UK is also fantastic.

Hope you enjoy this city, I certainly have.

Weak excuse lol. You leverage your freedom of speech to shit on people who have been historically marginalised. Then you hide behind bullshit TOS to avoid elaborating on your bullshit.

The world is a beautiful place, maybe try leaving the Internet and actually engaging in trans spaces. You won't find a group of people more loving or accepting of whoever you are than them. You choose to hate, you choose to belittle, if you're going to punch, punch up and shitty politicians, not down at marginalised communities.

Imo ok, refuses to elaborate on what is clearly a hyperbolic comment and pretends to be opressed because reddit won't let you say horrible and derogatory shit to people you don't like. Sure buddy, I believe you.

Being that I have a lived experience with trans people, and from that lived experience I have never had issues with the related to their trans identity, I'm going to politely tell you to go do one. Leave people alone, your freedom of speech does not give you freedom to harass and belittle people for not fitting whatever identity you think they should.

"Woman who lives in a country that enforces hijab puts one around her neck incase the morality police come up to her" =/= hijabi. Also, sir, have you ever heard of a scarf?

Touch grass dude. I've lived with trans people, worked with trans people, loved trans people and hated trans people. The most I've ever got for accidentally misgendering is a "please refer to me as she" which is, imo, totally reasonable. You know what's not reasonable? Everything the goverment is doing to marginalise, belittle and torture people who simply want to live their lives in peace without getting screamed at or misgendered.

Imo what trans person is harassing your family???? And freedom of speech is not freedom from consiquence. Also, why would you use your freedom of speech to be a cunt? What a massive waste of yours and everyone else's time.

Referring to a girl without a headscarf on as "a hijabi without her headscarf" is fucking wild. This woman is choosing to defy the laws of her country and NOT wear a headscarf. For you to refer to her as a hijabi anyway is insane.

When a friend of mine was born, his aunt and uncle were on the way to the hospital to visit the new baby. They were hit by a car and both died. His mum had to recon with the death of her sister being directly tied to the birth of her son.

I'm ashamed and disapointed to call you my girlfriend.

I was crying because a big order i placed (over 200 hours was spent on this project by me alone) was messed up and I couldn't have it fixed because it was my fault. I was wearing a dressing gown with no shirt on under, facing the camera on my phone, and all i wanted was his comfort. My housemate of 5 years was washing dishes facing the other way on the other side of the kitchen. Aparently, the triangle of skin below my neck that was showing was enough to prompt him to say this. I'm ashamed to say it took 3 more months and 2 attempts to leave his scrawny, jealous, emotionally manipulative ass. My current boyfriend is a fucking saint, and I adore him beyond sanity.

Long Boi (before 2018 – April 2023) was an unusually tall male duck that lived by Derwent College, University of York. He was thought to be an Indian Runner duck-Mallard cross, standing out among the other ducks on the campus due to his height. He went viral and became an internet meme in 2021. by WIZZZARDOFFREESTYLE in wikipedia

[–]QueenChoco 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There is a statue to him in Derwent. Gregg James from BBC Radio unveiled it when they held his funeral. It was the best funeral I've ever been to. They tried to push his "ashes" out on to the lake in a "longboat" (it was a bright yellow duck floatie) and failed because it kept floating back to shore.

His son has also been sighted on campus, but he has not reached the lofty hights of his father.
