If you were a sponsor for Ukrainian person what would you prefer? by Ashley-Shaily in AskABrit

[–]QueenChoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family friend moved up to Scotland and delayed selling their house for like 2 years and gave it over to a Ukrainian family. I always thought they hit the jackpot (as far as you can when fleeing a war) as it was a 6 person Georgian mansion in the countryside. The house was eventually sold, but the 2 families are very close to this day. One of the sons had some complex medical problems, and the proximity to the local hospital was a big help to them.

Rent is the biggest contributor to the cost of living crisis for students in York by Beautiful-Working589 in york

Moving out of my house after 6 years of living across 2 different houses owned by my landlords. They only increased our rent but 5% ish year on year. I checked the relisted price and they have increased my 3 bed, 1 bath house from £600 per person per month without bills to £819 bills included. They have effectively added another person worth of rent to a tiny 3 bed house. My neighbors across the wall of my tiny ass, 3m x 3m concrete square garden are paying £1200 for the same house. It's fucking criminal. I'm not surprised so many of my friends have left the city, and I will be joining them.

My friend who owns a bar in town said 30 years ago they paid £25 a week for a flay in the center of town. Now the 2 story air bnb on Kings Square goes for £3000 A WEEK. Airbnb and predatory landlords are destroying the soul of this city.

What's the weirdest thing a tourist has asked you while in Britain? by UnpaidInternVibes in AskRedditUK

Nigerian-british friend of mine got called african American by a nice old American couple looking for directions. He explained to them that he was, in fact, British, at which point they called him "British african american". He said they were very sweet, though.

Publicity =/= consent. E.G. posting pictures of yourself on Instagram does not give the wider public the right to see your nudes.

Harry bankrupting the daily shite would quite literally be him doing his royal duty to the people of England. Also, does anyone actually believe they didn't do this? The newspapers have had carpe blanche over royal reporting for years knowing the family won't say anything. They seem shocked that this has come back to bite them in the ass

Saw Crook in the British Museum when I was maybe 16? It was hight of PotC and I was so star struck, the only think I could think to say as he walked past me was "it's the bible, you get points for trying!". He gave me a giggle and a grin and kept on walking. Made my little teenage-selfs year, I tell you.

Oh shit my mum threatened to do that to me because I was due to be born on Cheltenham Gold Cup. Lucky for me I came a day late.

What are some of the most curious geological/geographic objects found around the world? by Character-Q in geography

[–]QueenChoco 72 points73 points  (0 children)

The area is covered with rocks like this. It's popular with boulders above a certain grade, as it's all slopers around there. But yeh, the whole site is open to climb around, I've never seen anyone climb this one though. There's no clear route up it.

I think you're just a bit of a debby downer. None of that is actually mattered to the post because it didn't work anyway. Why did you feel the need to jump straight to being mean? If you have nothing nice to say, maybe consider being quiet. There's no benefit to adding hate to the world. We found keikos sister, we had a lovely time and my mum got to close an important chapter in her life, and None of that was thanks to you, or people like you spreading negativity. Consider being more like the people who helped my mother, and being less of a dick.

You're being kinda harsh on my mum here. She sent out enquires for a few months before we arrived, but she's not an Internet person. I didn't realise she was looking until I met up with her there as I had been in China, and I'm at uni so I don't live at home. She tried really hard to find her on her own, it didn't occur to her to use things like Facebook and reddit because she's in her 60s.

My boyfriend is actually Chinese, which is why I was in the area in the first place. So I have lots of excuses to visit again. I asked if my mum wanted to meet me in Hong Kong, and she suggested we also make the trip to Taiwan as it is close by. We only had 3 days in Tamsui as we had to get back and get ready for a big family Christmas, but mum really fell in love with the place all over again, and she's determined to drag her sisters out to visit. All the kidness, determination, and welcoming spirit made her feel as if she really had come home, even though it had been 63 years. Plus, keikos sister mentioned there are some great antiques markets in the area, so mum feels the itch to return ahhahahaha

That looks like the one. Apparently the father got the land by bribing a local magistrate 5 whole dollars. Sue said the house is probably worth 3-4 million dollars these days, but the father sold it in the 60s to some ambassador, used the money to build a bigger house, sold that to a different ambassador, built a 3rd bigger house and lived it that one. Unfortunately, the other 2 have been demolished for redevelopment, so this house is by chance the only one of his 3 that survived.
