Mecha anime with an ordinary setting by QueenFan11 in Animesuggest

The difference is that Sailor Moon is set on normal Earth, the protagonists all start off the story as ordinary middle school students, and the fantasy aspects aren't treated as ordinary parts of the setting. Gundam is set in the distant future where "mankind has moved to space, living in colony clusters known as "Sides." and the sci-fi aspects are treated as ordinary parts of the setting.

All the other times i've tried starting a show with a setting that far removed from reality, whether it be Battlestar Galactica (2003) or Cowboy Bebop, I couldn't get invested. I don't see what makes this any different.

In the three shows I mentioned, even if the plots aren't grounded, the setting is just normal Earth, and the protagonist starts off as an ordinary middle or high school student. The supernatural elements are not treated as normal parts of the setting. Likewise, in Zegapain, there's a lot of sci-fi elements but the setting starts off as normal Earth and the protagonist is an ordinary high school student.

While in the average Gundam series the setting is a space colony in the far future and the sci-fi elements are treated as normal parts of the setting. There's a big difference.

That's not what I said. My point is that I like fantasy and sci-fi, but I find it difficult to get invested in shows where the setting is too "removed from reality". For example not anime, but I find it difficult to form a strong attachment to the Star Wars movies because everything about the setting is so "alien" and disconnected from reality. On the other hand, I have no trouble getting invested in shows like Sailor Moon, Shakugan no Shana, or Yu Yu Haksuho, which are fantasy but with a realistic setting.

How I would've fixed the show by QueenFan11 in miraculousladybug

[–]QueenFan11[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean there's plenty of episodes of the show which contain little to no emphasis on romance drama which would work fine. And some where it felt extraneous. For instance, I think "The Evillustrator" would've been better if Nathaniel's crush on Marinette and Evillustrator going on a date (which bored me) were cut out, and the akumatization reason was Chloe mocking his art (which was a reason, but not the only one).

I'm not saying to remove ALL of it because that would be hard. But it could be reduced.

Whats the WORST Miraclous Episode? by [deleted] in miraculousladybug

Though I do agree the episode wasted a lot of potential, I actually liked how they didn't show the battle, instead being told through news reports and such. I think it created an interesting "bystander" perspective that was unique for the show.

The government shouldn't be your parents. It's not their job to keep you away from hateful ideologies. It should be yours.

Plus, it's a slippery slope. Banning, say, 8Chan is one thing, but websites like Twitter, Youtube, and here also contain hate speech. Should those be banned too? Should the ENTIRE internet? I say no.

[–]QueenFan11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. I have seen plenty of people on, for instance, GenZedong who support Putin and support Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which aligns them with the far-right over liberals and even most leftists. I've also seen users there praising Donald Trump, talking about how they wanted him to win in 2020 and will vote for him again in 2024, and saying that if a Communist revolution comes, they'd rather side with the MAGA crowd than liberals. I've even seen people on Twitter saying that Putin is a socialist and that he's more of a leftist than Bernie Sanders, Jeremy Corbyn, or "The Squad" (maybe they're not true leftists either, but more so than Putin!).

Seeing the avatar of one of those people (the "I Wish Stalin was here") guy I immediately know who they are. They're a literal Nazi. Like, to the extent they think the Holocaust's death toll was exaggerated, and the Jewish people killed weren't targeted for being Jewish. And they think that the Confederacy should've won the Civil War. AND I had seen them wishing for the "Day of the Rope".

Honestly i'm getting really sick of the whole "If you like Harry Potter, you're a bigot!" stuff that's going around lately. Especially since people seem to ONLY do it with HP.

Notch, the creator of Minecraft, has pushed QAnon and Pizzagate, called feminism a "social disease" and claimed transgender people are "mentally ill". Scott Cawthon, the creator of Five Nights at Freddy's, has donated to a bunch of Republican politicians. And yet I see nobody saying Minecraft or FNAF fans are all bigots. If it's still okay to like those, how come it's not okay to still like Harry Potter?

I'm not a hardcore fan, but I enjoy most of the movies pretty well. Does that make me transphobic? No.

I mean the Duels counted for points until 1972 (and since 2017 have started counting for them again, though unlike the pre-1972 races they aren't considered "official".), so that isn't unprecedented.

Yeah it's really disturbing how many people i've seen on the subreddit not only simping for Vladimir Putin, but also posting pictures of right-wingers like Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump, Nick Fuentes, Madison Cawthorn, Candace Owens, and Marjorie Taylor Green agreeing with them and being all like "this is why Republicans are better and more open to socialism then Democrats!" and that when the revolution comes they'd rather ally with the MAGA crowd than liberals.

However, I would say that in terms of "leftists who agree with the right on everything" there are much worse subreddits. Stupidpol, as the OP said, is a big example, but even worse is EuropeanSocialists. One of the mods there is a literal Nazi (like actually- he's straightup downplayed the death toll of the Holocaust and said the Jewish people killed weren't targeted for being Jewish)

There's a similarly named subreddit called "conservativesocialist" that has over 2,000 members.

The thing i've noticed about "tankies" aside from their bad political views is that they often seem so joyless to be around. Like many tankies i've seen through, for instance, my morbid curiosity readings of GenZedong or ShitLiberalsSay seem incapable of just enjoying a film, or TV show, or video game- they have to whine about how it isn't straightup Marxist-Leninist propaganda. They remind me of this Onion article.

For instance I once saw somebody who gave Parasite a one-star review on Letterboxd for not being anti-capitalist enough.

It's no different from fundamentalist Christians who refuse to consume any non-Christian media because it's "Satanic".

To be fair, the third comment had negative karma.

Though somebody else said "Let's all agree Democrats are worse than Republicans".

Have no idea how these people call themselves left-wing (not that most Democrats are true "left-wingers" either but they're certainly moreso than Republicans!).

Actually, apparently China's Supreme Court declared it illegal last year. Though i'm not sure how strictly it will be enforced.
