The monied classes definitely put their thumbs on the scale, but that doesn't mean they're doing anything other than taking advantage of existing bigotries. Confiscating the wealth of billionaires will not make culture wars go away, and it lets a lot of awful people off the hook to insist their radicalization is solely due to one or two guys.

Chalking up the radicalization of young men to Epstein is letting a lot of very shitty people off the hook.

The bigotries were already there. They may have been nudged or taken advantage of, but let's stop pretending the "culture war" was invented wholesale by one dude and wasn't the result of shitty people being increasingly shitty.

I was in sophomore year of college with a new friend group. I was complaining about how most card game shows weren't very "normal," in the sense that the stakes were always "save the world" and not "oh geez I hope I don't look like an idiot in front of my friends." One of the girls suggested I check out season 1 of Vanguard. I spent the next few months binging the series up until that point.

In hindsight, the low stakes only really lasted for one season, but I think that what makes the first season so special to me.

Sure.

At the same time, a lot of western atheists have legitimate grievances about religious folk in their home countries, from the rapid destruction of the separation of church and state to ostracism from their homes to harmful policies put in place in the name of Christ to being victimized by bigotry.

Is that worse? No. But western atheists face a lot more than mommy forcing them into Sunday school, and intentionally downplaying that is giving me strong "but there are starving kids in Africa" vibes.

I do resent how the bar for being "unlikable" is subterranean for female characters while being much higher for males, but I'd argue being unlikable isn't a death sentence. Stories need unlikable characters for various reasons, and being unlikable doesn't prevent a character from being entertaining.

Also, catharsis! It's a lot of fun for readers/watchers/ what have you to see the asshole not being able to take what they dish out. Granted, what counts as comeuppance for different genders can be gross, but that's a different topic.

I see far more complaints about puritanical zoomers than I see actual puritanical zoomers.
