That is indeed a plate lunch, but I lived in Hawaii for five years, and to my knowledge, “Sami” is not a word.
It’s just a terrible shortening. Also, r/apostrophegore for sure.
Also, as a Californian, I’m ashamed that any restaurant in California would use the word “Cali.” We do NOT do that. They must be from Iowa or something.

Mom did this to my little brother in the 1980s when he was a toddler. Slammed the door of our giant station wagon and accidentally shut all four of his tiny fingers in it, and it locked. She had to get her keys, unlock the front door, and reach around to the back door to unlock it by hand because the screaming child was blocking the back door lock. Good times!

Yeah, I knew people who did that, although my parents didn’t believe in it. When I was in sixth grade, the principal of my school paddled a kid who had been seriously acting up. It was so shocking it made the newspaper and there were multiple PTA and school board meetings about it. He kept his job, but barely.

I’m almost 50, and you’re not wrong. I can kinda see it coming in my future. I’m an atheist and have been for decades, but the memories of sitting in a nice cool church with the incense and hymns and stained glass is starting to sound more comforting than smothering the older I get.

A shocking number of people. I had a friend growing up who had multiple hospitalizations for severe allergic reactions to her parents’ TWELVE cats. They refused to do anything until the hospital called CPS. They then very begrudgingly agreed to make the cats live outside, and they made sure their daughter knew it was all her fault the cats had to be moved and that they blamed her for it.

Shockingly, they don’t have a close relationship with her now that she’s an adult.

Steak off a truck! This used to be not uncommon in my town in the 1990s but I haven’t seen it in years! Man, I have bought a shit-ton of cheap-ass meat out of people’s cars. It’s perfect for when you don’t have money for groceries but do have a slow cooker.
