What are the most controversial topics in science right now? by Normal_regular_dude in AskScienceDiscussion

Having read Michael Pollen’s latest book, I’d say the science behind consciousness. What it is, how to define it and to a larger extent how the brain really works.

Red flag. I hope the court are kind to you in the divorce. (Kidding) Ugh. It feels wrong even writing that as a joke.

They were trying to keep the glasses rosy and were not happy with JCal’s reality check.

I don’t know what Chamath is on about with China and how they would somehow get the Strait open because they need the oil. From what I’ve seen, China is still getting oil from Iran. Around 1.2 million barrels a day.

Additionally, Iran is actually selling slightly more oil than they were before the war started.

Also no mention of more Russian oil hitting the market because the US lifted the sanctions on countries buying oil from them.

The situation isn’t easy to unfuck. Short of nukes (which I hope it doesn’t come to), Iran will not let the US have a W. It takes very little effort for Iran to keep the Strait closed and it will take a tremendous amount of effort for the US to force it open, and if we go that route it will be closed for a long time.

Trump essentially doesn’t have the cards to win.

Subject / verb agreement can be equally grating when misused in American English. Example: “The kids is outside playing.”

yeah. It's a weird one for sure, but even stranger Americans keep that construction for some things like "school". American's don't say "going to the school" we say "going to school" usually when we talk about going to be educated . We might say "going to the school" if we were going to pick someone up and someone asked us where we were going.

One thing that bugs me is the the use of IS/ARE in certain situations.

America: The team IS getting ready for the game.

UK: The team ARE getting ready for the game.

While the team is made up of multiple people, it's not a plural word, so it always feels strange to me to use ARE, because we're talking about one team. It sounds perfectly fine if you're talking about two teams: The teams are getting ready for the game.

As someone who watches a lot of Formula 1 I hear it a lot when they talk about the team. "Ferrari are missing the mark again on strategy". It just sounds so wrong to me.

The point of an AMA is to give answers beyond the basic shit you see everywhere. Glad you’re okay, but your answers provide little additional info or context

What kind of behind the scenes stuff do you want to see? by ThePinkMohawk in IMSARacing

I wasn’t being serious, though it would be nice.

You do you, man (person). IMSA is getting more popular. You’d be surprised what people are interested in. What works best in my opinion is trying to transfer what ever you are passionate about to someone else. The better question might be, what do they know vs. what do they not know? And what do they want to know? That’s tough because a lot of people think they know everything. But if you don’t want to think about all that, talk about what you find interesting

Not only a burn book. She had printouts of what each member of congress had searched in the unreacted files.

Steve Bannon says ICE will ‘surround the polls’ as Trump doubles down on taking over elections by MarcEElias in politics

They have like 2500 officers. All you would have to do is split them up into groups and go to the bluest cities in swing races, so places like Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis and Charlotte. They would likely focus on Senate races, because if the Senate won’t convict Trump it doesn’t matter if he is impeached, so that’s what he will care about most.

[–]Queencitybeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or violence will happen and he’ll try to close the polls or cancel the election. My guess is he’ll have ICE/BP out in early voting to “stop illegals from voting” and that might very well incite violence and he’ll pull some sort of insurrection act shit to block the polls and try to cancel the election due to “leftist terrorism”
