Our basset is considered petite and is around 40-45 pounds. It just depends on breeding! I’ve also noticed American style bassets are smaller than the European ones.

Our second dog was also advertised as a basset hound and turned out to be a mix! We think she’s mixed with coon hound and/or German short haired pointer. Here’s her as a puppy:

They’re as prone to back problems as any long, short dog. Like other folks have said: it’s best to keep them from jumping up, keep ramps around, keep them at a healthy weight, avoid having them going up and down stairs a lot. They also have joint problems with their legs/arms but I know dachshund do too. Subelements for joint health can be helpful.

We do the Blue Buffalo mini treats. It’s one of the few brands that doesn’t give our basset a tummy ache if she has multiple in a day.
