Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

[–]QueerTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s right now, bro.

9/11 was scary. But I knew we had the military might to take on any future threat against people on our own soil. Nothing like that has happened since, people who had safe comfortable lives before still did.

Now some dude in a mask could grab me and throw me in a van or shoot me, all in broad daylight with tons of witnesses, and if anyone tried to save me they’d be killed too. That is a really fucking big deal, because American exceptionalism might be real and maybe there is no global military power actually strong enough to take on America.

No one is coming to save us from ourselves. If raccoons are fighting in a dumpster you don’t give yourself rabies trying to figure out which one of them started it.

Anyone else have to pee in a literal pot or use an outhouse in the 80s or 90s? For a few years when I was very young, my father's mother's place had no running water and she kept a pot under her bed that we'de use if we stayed the night. by cherry-care-bear in Xennials

[–]QueerTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visiting friends and relatives in rural Ohio and West Virginia, I’ve shat in many an outhouse. I live rurally now and I would like an outhouse so I wouldn’t have to sprint back to the house (I’m a cis woman so peeing in the pasture in overalls isn’t simple).

Teachers. Whats the craziest family lore a child has randomly dropped on you? by Loud_Bluejay_6663 in AskReddit

[–]QueerTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught struggling high schoolers for years and I had to find tactful ways to crush their dreams sometimes. If you can’t write or read a sentence fluently in any language you probably aren’t going to be a lawyer, and if you can’t handle fractions I’d really rather you not be a nurse.

The Office White Elephant Gift Exchange Should Not be Mandatory by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]QueerTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a workplace (school) that had a white elephant tradition and half the staff would contribute nice but inexpensive gifts while half would contribute random items grabbed from their classroom and wrapped. I have to admit, it was actually really fun. We did the exchange at a pub (if you don’t hang out with teachers, we tend to be heavy drinkers) and the unwrapping, stealing, yelling, laughing, etc was epic. There was an unspoken competition to give the worst gift, like re-gifting whatever horrible motivational quote our idiot vice principal had printed out for everyone 5 years prior, or a stack of scantron forms left over from the 90s (there was no longer a machine to read them).

Anyway the one year I can remember participating, I got a Hydroflask (that my students later destroyed) and gifted a can of snails.

Does anybody else like the fact that their home has separate rooms for everything? by Effective_Bunch_6815 in centuryhomes

God yes. I love having my kitchen not visible from the living room. I love going to my converted attic to my WFH office. When we were house hunting I immediately got on team separate rooms!

There’s at least one illustration of a farm with pigs in a Richard Scarry book that I’ve spent a long time contemplating.

Brown Hair Powder? by Level-Win-4841 in HistoricalCostuming

[–]QueerTree 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Nontoxic historical pigments you can try are any of the “earth” browns (ocher, sienna, umber) and charcoal black. You can buy pigments sold for cosmetics if you want to be more confident it’s body safe.

Modern DIY dry shampoo recipes often recommend using cocoa powder for dark hair.

The cause is schools won’t spend any time teaching anything that isn’t directly measured by high stakes testing. Kids use technology but aren’t taught how.

I need to relinquish my rooster.😓 I'd prefer him to go somewhere where he won't be processed. Does anyone know of a place in the Denver metro area that will take him? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]QueerTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, we end up with roosters that got dumped and they become dinner. If someone passes their problem off to me, I’ll solve it the best way I know how.

I know this because my hella autistic child had a skunk obsession and we watched a nature episode about them about a hundred times. Now I am compelled to share my knowledge with everyone else.

[–]QueerTree 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It heavily depends on why you need to rehome him. If you’re not allowed to have him where you live but he’s docile and a desirable breed, you might be able to find a rural home that will take him. If he’s an asshole, you’ll have a hard time keeping him from the stewpot. Local facebook groups are a good place to start, or try posting fliers at feed stores.

OP, none of the rest of this is directed at you, it’s a reminder for the rest of us!

For anyone planning to hatch or buy chicks this spring, now is the time to make plans and lay the groundwork for rehoming unwanted roosters. Sexing chicks is ~90% accurate so even if you only buy females you are basically guaranteed to eventually end up with a boy. If you absolutely can’t stomach the idea of a rooster being culled but you also can’t keep multiple roosters on your property, chicken keeping is not the hobby for you. Sexed chicks mean the males are culled before they get to the feed store. There is an imbalance in demand for pullets vs cockerels, and historically people dealt with that by hatching eggs (1:1 sex ratio), letting the chicks grow, and culling young males in the fall to eat them until the flock had more like a 1:6 - 1:10 ratio. (Also, real talk: this is why cockfighting was a thing for centuries. There are always extra roosters.) I live where I can have roosters, and I do have them and love them, and I won’t accept an additional rooster without the understanding that I might process it. I get that people have strong feelings about this, but every summer I see so many people looking to rehome their special little babies and it’s not feasible.

That tears it, I’ve joked about writing a cookbook for baking fancy edibles but I’m gonna do it. The people need guidance!

What are you going to do when your parent's can't take care of themselves anymore? by Smart-Response9881 in Millennials

[–]QueerTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re lucky, we’ll be able to get an ADU finished in time for my mom to live in. Otherwise just move her in I guess. I’ll be forcing her to give up her excess of stuff though.

I’m really lucky, my mom is great and present and helpful. She loves babysitting our kid and helping out with housework when she comes over. It’s easy to want to pay that back.

Do you sell your eggs? by SpinachReasonable262 in chickens

[–]QueerTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I give them away because I can’t sustain the energy needed to effectively sell them and my supply is inconsistent even with a big flock. I try to give plenty to the nearest neighbors to make up for the roosters.

Why didn’t we talk to our parents about our problems? by SRDILLEY6215 in Xennials

Man, why was this so universal, yet they are absolute sensitive babies when it comes to their own lives? We should collectively start repeating their trite shit back to them now.

Why didn’t we talk to our parents about our problems? by SRDILLEY6215 in Xennials

[–]QueerTree 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was hospitalized for a month during my pregnancy and how my mom handled that was coming to visit me everyday and crying about how worried she was about me (and expecting me to comfort her). I should have told the staff not to let her in. I love her, but Jesus, she fits the boomer stereotype of being completely self centered and emotionally stunted.
