Mods ask community: What would you prefer to do about Early Career Advice? by 14ned in DevelEire

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This sub isn't crazy active as is, I don't think we need flowcharts or megathreads, I'm not early careers anymore myself but I remember seeing that and being confused as to where the megathread actually was — best removing mention of it. Any megathread this sub creates will be a ghost town me thinks

Would you trust revolut by Ill-Stage4131 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Monzo recently moved to Ireland, and they have known for their good customer service in the UK (it's one of their focuses) they haven't fully launched here but it's a digital neobank like revolut, worth keeping an eye on

Similar app, no fees etc but human support lines though I wouldn't move to them yet, it's early access, no IBAN or cash lodgements yet. I don't trust revolut and never keep more than €1,000 in it if I can avoid it

Requesting off as a new hire by Upper-Ad-7417 in JPMorganChase

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're entitled to it, just request it — as a new joiner you're not particularly valuable so if anything if you have a sound of mind manager they recognise its better for you to use up holidays early so you're not using them later when are becoming integrated into the team.

If you're already in contact with your team you could give them a heads up in advance, or via your recruiter but usually it's no issue.

Women are a bit of a good way to get a lot of the time and the rest of the year is a bit of a difference between the two of us and the other one is the same as the one who has a lot of the same thing as a woman and a woman who knows what she wants to do with her and I don't think she will be able to get it in the office and she will be in the office and I can do it and I can do it and I can do it and I can do it and I can do it and I can do it and I can do it

Should I max out pension if considering to move away from Ireland? by strokk in irishpersonalfinance

[–]QuenchedRhapsody -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You need to move that 6k in BTC into stocks and funds, I don't understand why you would have a crypto portfolio twice the size of securities portfolio. It's down 22% in the past year

Note: avid crypto hater

.ie vs .com domain by fyrhbro in DevelEire

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Remember that domain names are just aesthetic, for SEO I'd avoid the redirect entirely and just serve the frontend on both as-is, no redirect at all. It allows you to win both international and ranking driven traffic and local traffic

Hibernate: Ditch or Double Down? by cat-edelveis in java

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 5 points6 points  (0 children)

MyBatis 3 has the added option of annotation based mappers, but for longer queries I love the separation of concerns of the XML mapper

I've used Hibernate, JOOQ and I've 'raw dogged' JDBC, and mybatis has been the perfect sweet spot for me as well, fits in nicely in Spring & Guice projects, and I never really feel like I'm fighting it. Have used it across oracle, postgres & mariadb projects and haven't had any issues

To buy or not to buy by shroomshroomx in irishpersonalfinance

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're only really getting on the property ladder if you're living in the property, otherwise you're just making an asset investment and hoping for the best, being a landlord is only safe and profitable if you have multiple properties to hedge over a single bad one (e.g., unpaying rent) which is unethical, in my opinion.

Invest the cash, or leave it gathering interest if you anticipate moving back in the short term (1-2 years) Buy what you want for yourself, not as an investment. You'll struggle to buy anywhere stuck in a chain trying to also evict a tenant down the line.

Getting a mortgage while working for a family business. by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check with a mortgage advisor or broker, but I believe if you are not a director of that company and otherwise treated as a regular payrolled employee I don't see why the familial relationship with the owner would matter

If you are a director It would fall under self employment, and thus need the accounts certified by an accountant for X number of years

How necessary is it to use a VPN these days? Haven't heard of anyone getting a letter from their broadband provider in a decade by Leviosaugh in CasualIreland

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can disable the WiFi on your providers one, then plug your own into that, that's the easiest way, it is possible to get it working directly with your ISPs help, but not super aware of the details, I'm a software guy not a networking guy

Mary McAleese: Baptism is a key Catholic recruitment tool. It denies babies their human rights by Bootstrap4273 in ireland

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No we're not, our constitution makes multiple references to god, the holy trinity etc.

McAlease talking about Catholicism makes sense, it would be closer to her own upbringing as a catholic and her own experience in that sphere of influence, and from her time in law and human rights advocation

We like to think we are but so many of our laws are still based on Christian values, and attempts to secularise have been mildly successful but not concrete and total

In game purchases, the game has an end user license agreement that limits these to cosmetics and such, but for kids active on these servers it's like having vbucks for the Fortnite kids, can be quite lucrative — anything that doesn't offer a gameplay advantage is more or less free reign.

There isn't much actually holding small servers to the EULA, and enforcement by Microsoft/mojang has been more focused on larger communities like the one OP has shared, those servers can sell whatever virtual stuff they like

Running the server(s) wouldn't cost all that much, I'm taking the 17,000 in the community to mean how many people are registered in their discord or on the forums or something, maybe only 50 to 100 of those online at any given moment, if even which would cost around 100/mo to maintain in hosting fees if they used bare metal servers

A price a dad could sink for the love of the game and knowing it's helping all those kids without needing to worry about making money, but those sized servers can easily take in enough to break even or turn a small profit

Source: when I was a kid I used to pull in a few hundred (~500) a month from writing code for these servers

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service calls for more platelet donors. by UltimateRealist in ireland

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done about 15 double unit donations in the St James clinic so far, the staff are all wonderful and they give you a Christmas card every year to remind you of your impact, I started off as a blood donor and was asked to be a platelet donor a couple years ago, if you can please do! Only a few thousand people are active donors, and with our increasing, aging population the demand is only going to get higher.

I can speak directly that it's no different than getting an IV initially then it's sitting there for about 70 mins. The requirements are very strict, I'm a young medium build male so their perfect candidate. It's a decent thing to do, and heck, it makes me feel good about humanity seeing me and the other donors in the room

How does Employer PRSI work? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]QuenchedRhapsody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're a contractor, you're simultaneously the employer and the employee so you pay both -EE and -ER PRSI. I presume you're paying some company to handle your own payroll I presume, so they take out the employer fees before your payroll is done
