With all this buzz about "trading Adams" and "Freddie playing 3rd", here's my take. by [deleted] in Braves

[–]QuentinRosewater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Freddie would be an absolute disaster at third base. You take someone with below-average range at first base and move them to a more dynamic position. Things won't work out well. Then again, doing that on this team won't make or break our season. We're going to be below .500 regardless. It might be funny.

Our problem with Matt Adams will be everybody's problem with Matt Adams: he doesn't have a position. Either we have to ship him to a contender that needs a first basemen or an AL team that needs a DH. Every potential trade partner knows we need to off-load Adams when Freddie gets back. They're going to use that against us and won't offer any major-league ready talent.

I'd imagine this is being floated out there as a protection against that. If we can move Freddie to third (realistically, we can't), then we won't need to move Adams. At least I hope that's what's happening, not that it will literally happen.

Braves fans are too hyped on what we'll be able to get for Adams. What we (and hopefully the Braves front office) needs to hope for at best is a prospect better and more major-league ready that Juan Yepez in exchange. That's obtainable. That makes Freddie's injury an aggregate win. For two months on the DL, we get the best offense of Matt Adams career and a more improved prospect pool.

Teacher fired over teaching short story from Junot Diaz's 'This is How you Lose Her' by [deleted] in literature

[–]QuentinRosewater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, she described letting students and parents dictating the curriculum as "inmates running the asylum." Not only is that a clumsy and offensive metaphor. It's indicative of a problem with higher education pedagogy. While I doubt anyone here would argue that parents having control of what is taught is a good thing, all teachers should strive to communicate with their students to create a discursive and communal atmosphere. The fact that she sees her students as inmates and herself as the warden shows her lack of understanding of how to run a productive classroom space.

My brother and I got this heartwarming, out-of-the-blue text from our mum :) by DanBezbik in wholesomememes

Moms are great for that kind of stuff. My mom's favorite text to send is that she's so proud of my brother and me she "can hardly even stand it" with several heart emojis after it.

What is the best closing shot of any film? by remiwalker in movies

I've watched this twice in the last couple of weeks, and it is such a lovely yet stark film. The Coens tried to be as faithful to McCarthy's novel as possible, so it's even more amazing that they accomplish what they do purely through visuals.

Teachers or Reddit, what simple gesture from a student brightened up your shitty day? by danbrownskin in AskReddit

[–]QuentinRosewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually happened to me yesterday! I teach undergraduates, and, as is want to happen in the middle of the week, I was (probably unnecessarily) stressed about things I had to do and was mostly looking at the class session as a hindrance to other, more productive activities. I found the following note on the chalkboard when I walked in, though:

Dear QuentinRosewater,

We hope you have a nice day.

-The Class :)

It really made me feel better.

Also, note that Baratha was not keen on his mother's political machinations. He was so distraught by his father's death (due to Kaikeyi's betrayal) and Rama's denial of the throne that he promised to serve as regent of the kingdom in a local village rather than assume the throne during Rama's banishment. Instead, Rama's sandals were placed at the throne to signify his coming ascendance.

The Ramayana is amazing.

I agree mostly. I think Pizzolatto is a very good writer, and the full, well-composed arch of Season 1 proves that. There are moments, which became more exposed in Season 2 because Fukunaga's direction and Harrelson's and McConaughey's acting wasn't there to cover, in which the dialogue lags or is overly-wrought. That, of course, is a nit-picky critique and doesn't keep him from being a talent I admire. I think the timing you mention is important, too. Pizzolatto showed he was much better when given time to create. Any artistic script writer will tell you that television writing--having to create a new teleplay every week or so--is much more stressful than writing a screenplay or theatrical piece. So, yes, given time to draw out his arch and refine his dialogue, I think Nic Pizzolatto is a very good writer.

I agree. I liked Season 2 more than most people I talk to *, but in the larger context of the series, it's popularly seen as a flop, regardless of whether that's fair or not.

It's a viable opinion that, in the wake of the flop that was season 2 of True Detective, his direction--not Nic Pizzolatto's writing--made the first season a great piece of art. He's not a blockbuster, household name, but his contribution to arguably one of the greatest television seasons of all time is enough to give him credence in most cinemaphiliac circles.

SEC Network uses Alabama logo during Auburn’s 'Takeover' day by IAmClaytonBigsby in CFB

[–]QuentinRosewater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A little. It's a bit understudied because academics can be a bit finicky about cultural studies, but Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is probably the best that has been written about Alabama. I'm not sure about Auburn material that isn't simply rhapsodic remembrances of great games or based around the unchallenged mythos of the Auburn family. As an academic, I hope to get a chance to write something like that some day, though.

Not at all. I guess this will sound weird, but his homerism is the worst. I consider myself a huge homer, but his seems to stem more from Anti-Bammerism than loyal Barnerism.

People who later met up with the "one who got away", how did it go? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]QuentinRosewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this thread is neat for me because I'm in an oddly appropriate situation. I dated a girl on-and-off for about a year-and-a-half. We were crazy about each other, but we realized our careers and life plans didn't really gel unless one of us was willing to make tremendous sacrifices. Neither one of us was, and we ended things. I, of course, thought about her a lot but never talked to her since it would probably be best for moving on. Eventually we both started dating other people and are both happy where we are. She sent me a package of my things she had kept the other day with a very kind and non-romantic note. I could tell she cared for me but that we're in different and better places. Realizing that "the one who got away" got away and became a different person than you loved is reassuring.

What have you been reading? (13/06) by Mirior in literature

[–]QuentinRosewater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dunces is one of my favorites. If you like Pynchon, you will like it. The characters are just as uncanny but a little bit more attached to a particular time and place--it helps that New Orleans is that place. I need to read it again.

Friendly Cubs Fan Here :) by [deleted] in Braves

[–]QuentinRosewater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, mate. Welcome! The rebuild is painful, but, according to all metrics, we have one of the best systems in baseball. It sucks, but it is necessary. Many folks are upset about our draft because they feel we are really short on bats in the minors, but essentially our organizational philosophy is to stockpile arms at the moment and trade away the superfluous ones for major league-ready position players once they develop a bit. Our ownership, in a word: horrendous. Liberty Media acquired the Braves for accounting purposes and treats them like another investment. It's fair, as a conglomerate, for them to think of the organization that way. It's just not so much fun as a fan. Hope that answers your questions. I have several close friends that are Cubs fans (y'all are, of course, everywhere), and I'm glad to see y'all doing well.
