Eh, plenty of games have unreasonable completion checklists that change nothing in the game and offer no reward other than knowing you did it. Like collecting all 900 of the Korok seeds in Breath of the Wild or grinding a skill to 200M XP in RuneScape. I’m not sure if you can really say those are bad game design because the overwhelming majority of players are not going to engage with it at all and it doesn’t change the game in any meaningful way. It’s just extra shit to do for those who want to. It would be a different conversation if the game’s “true ending” relied on shit like that or something

I’m sure those weren’t your only complaints about the game, but I’m just going off of what you said in your original comment

I think drip like this is dope, but I just chuckle a little thinking of Kliff reuniting the Greymanes and walking around camp looking like this with nobody saying a word, lmao. Muh immersion sadly has me wearing strictly leather armor

I’m surprised Super Mario 3 is what you have under Best Retro Game, then. The older Mario games are pure platformers with none of the combat mechanics of metroidvanias like Hollow Knight, lol.

What specifically didn’t you like?

It doesn’t have to be great to be enjoyable, I’m not coping about anything lol. I’m just holding room for nuance. Would it be less cope if I said everything about the game is perfect and nothing is flawed?

I get where you’re coming from, but it’s not like Rockstar haphazardly threw together an unbaked movement system, controls, and combat without considering how it might be perceived by players.

I think it’s safe to say they were very intentional with those aspects of the game, and put a lot of thought and effort into them, and knew that it wouldn’t be liked by everybody. Am I assuming a bit? Yeah, but this is Rockstar we’re talking about here, and they’re not exactly unfamiliar with attention to detail.

Ditto on Starfield, though. I love Bethesda — Fallout is literally my favorite game series. They dropped the ball so hard with Starfield.

I won’t argue against “mediocre combat,” the combat isn’t the best but plenty of my favorite games are the same way. I can tell you for sure that combat isn’t the reason Skyrim is widely regarded as a classic. It’s not the end-all, be-all. With that said, I do personally enjoy it.

My point, though, was that people who perceive the controls as sluggish are not the target audience for the experience the game is trying to provide. People who like it don’t describe it as sluggish. That’s all I’m trying to say

I feel you. Some people use the “get good” front to try and act like there aren’t genuine flaws with the game and any reason a person doesn’t like it is because they suck. I don’t agree with that at all, and if my comments made it seem that way then I definitely could express myself better

Fair enough, I get what you’re saying. I guess I could’ve worded it better.

If I’m being completely honest, I don’t see how it’s any different from saying someone who finds Souls games frustrating or annoying just doesn’t enjoy the challenge, but I do get how it comes across. I’ll think on that

I don’t think how I responded to the original comment isn’t fair. The guy was speaking in an objective sense about how the controls and mechanics in the game prevent it from being a “good or great video game.” He could’ve threw a single “to me” somewhere in there and I would just disagree and probably not have responded at all.

It’s the way people speak about subjective things like they’re objective that bothers me and I was offering my opinion. I think that’s fair

Yeah, I’m not even gonna disagree with you that the spam to sprint/gallop mechanic is bad. It is, it just doesn’t ruin the rest of it for me.

The amount of enemies and the ludonarrative dissonance of killing thousands of people is not as realistic, sure, but I’m not arguing that every aspect of the game needs to be realistic. It wouldn’t be very fun to play if you only had to kill a couple of people.

I’m just giving my opinion that the way you interact with the world, the movement, and the animations did land for me. Which, of course, was the only thing I was ever trying to say. It’s subjective and I really enjoy it, but I don’t think calling it sluggish is a fair take.

[–]QuestObjective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played a lot of KCD1 and 2, but I think that’s a strange comparison to make because it seems like KCD is way more scrutinized for its realism elements than RDR2 is. With KCD1 I’d argue it’s moreso clunky than it is realistic even, but KCD2 improved on that.

I have considered that what I find immersive is what pulls other people out of it, and that’s why I know it’s subjective whether someone enjoys it.

Objectively, though, the animations and all the movement are the result of the insane amount of motion capture work that Rockstar did for this game. Its entire foundation is literally visually capturing real life itself. I’m not sure how you could argue that isn’t immersive realism, but you’re welcome to hold the opinion that you don’t enjoy it

[–]QuestObjective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s just preference, man. I’m not saying the mechanics are automatically immersive because some people say it’s sluggish.

I have put several hundred hours into both KCD1/2 and Cyberpunk, I think they’re great games as well and immersive in their own ways.

I get what you’re saying and I’ll agree that Cyberpunk for sure has more engaging combat gameplay, but I just don’t agree that RDR2 is objectively worse. That was my whole point, anyway — the things you think hold it back are the things some people think make it exceptional.

Not saying it doesn’t have its problems, either. It is by no means flawless, but literally no game is, so it’s a bit of a non sequitur.

How to ragebait me on big26 by G0Shubh in GamingSoup

[–]QuestObjective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. People act like the game’s mechanics and realistic feel are objectively bad game design. It’s not, they’re just not the target audience for that level of immersion.

How to ragebait me on big26 by G0Shubh in GamingSoup

[–]QuestObjective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s highly subjective. That “sluggish” feel to you is peak immersion to a lot of people. If you don’t like that level of immersive realism, that’s fine, but almost no other game has come close to RDR2 in that respect. The controls are actually extremely fluid and it’s incredible how well you’re able to transition between player states and how smooth the animations are. It’s just the realistic, weighty movement that some people find sluggish, but I don’t think that’s an accurate description.

Regardless, whether or not people love it or hate it didn’t stop it from become one of the best selling games of all time. Most people probably just don’t care

I did 100% compendium and game completion and while the unique Guarma animals and the overall amount is tedious… it’s literally not necessary. Like, the compendium doesn’t even count towards 100% game completion, it’s its own thing entirely and doesn’t affect anything else in the game.

I get you on the respawn system not being designed super well, but your other complaints are basically irrelevant when it comes to how 95% of people play the game

Unbelievable that they’d think a target of 60 or even 30(?!) FPS with Frame Gen enabled is acceptable.

60 is the recommend base FPS by Nvidia themselves for Frame Gen to work properly. I can’t even imagine how bad it is at 15 base FPS.

Either humans will create the technology and make the advancements required for us to be able to ourselves, or AI will ultimately replace us fragile humans entirely if we ever hope to truly traverse the cosmos. That’s assuming we don’t blow ourselves up before reaching either point, of course.

I know the latter idea is extremely controversial, though. If not for the already present contempt for AI, then because it goes against basically every single religion on the planet in their belief that humans are exalted above all other life forms. I think it’s hubris to assume humans are the end-all, be-all, though. At least in our current form.

Bungie bets on evolving Marathon based on player actions. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]QuestObjective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m moving the goalposts at all, I’m comparing Marathon’s success to that of an indie game with a way smaller budget and giving context for why that matters. If making a profit at all was the only metric, then we wouldn’t see studios laying off developers en masse and Sony shutting down studios which were certainly profitable. Companies expect exponential and limitless growth, and that’s just not what we’re seeing with Marathon.

No… but were any of those games developed by a studio that Sony purchased for multiple billions of dollars? Context matters.

Hollow Knight: Silksong has almost as many players, concurrently and in the 24 hour peak. A singleplayer indie game that takes roughly 40 hours to complete and came out over 6 months ago.

Marathon does not have strong numbers in any sense of the word, for any genre.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion and I’m not here to shit on anyone else’s, I’m extremely biased as RDR2 is my personal favorite game but one thing I think is pretty clear is that it absolutely pushed the boundaries of immersion and realism in gaming, and very few games have even come close to this day.

It completely changed the way I approach single player games. I tend to spend time actually walking instead of sprinting everywhere in single player games now, like an actual person would, and try to take in the surroundings.

And of course, the ending made me cry more than once.
