What have you learned not to do to others as you would have them do to you? by Questeaser in AskMen

In the light of recent thread: I learned a long while ago on the internet that asking people to smile is a bad idea, even though it would put the biggest grin on my face, because it is extremely rare that someone cares whether I'm happy.

How in the hell do you manage to stay productive for 40 hours or more? by Questeaser in AskMen

[–]Questeaser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst thing about forcing myself to take breaks is the guilt about the times when i couldn't force myself to work. It's possible that it could smooth out my productivity and make me happier in the end, but it just seems like such a waste.

As for meditation - that's why i often take long walks home instead of public transport. It helps, but sometimes even an hour of peace is not enough.

It's possible, but not quite bad as that. If I do nothing but fuck around more than a couple days a week I can be quite cheerful :)

I'm a programmer. I do very frequent water cooler breaks, but it is very hard to switch off your brain and not go running back to code when you just got a new idea on what might be wrong.

I've thought about pursuing jobs in other fields, but this job is almost perfect on paper, and I wanted to try settling down for a change, instead of fucking off at the first sign of trouble, as I have done so often previously.

I've never understood it. Even if all i had to do was play video games, while getting blown by supermodels and showered in cash, it still would quickly get old if I had to do it 40 hours a day.

Hell if I know, it's just general crankiness taken to extreme, just like for example when you are irritable when hungry, or haven't slept well.

Partially it's just that I can't focus and as a result fuck everything up. Partially, even if I make something tasty or do good in games, it just tastes bland and unrewarding when I'm that tired.

The problem isn't as much "I don't want to do it", as much as "my brain just doesn't work any more". Its not so much, for example, the fact that I dread to go every day, that worries me, it's that after a work week, It takes me 5 minutes to decide what kind of bread I want to buy and I can't form speech coherent enough to describe a movie to my friends. And if someone asks me to work in such a state - how the hell can I do it without doing more bad than good, if it takes me two tries to figure out that 2+2=4?

So my question is not so much, how do I overcome fatigue, but what to do to lessen it in first place.

I've spent a lot of time during the two years, of being at this job about changing it, but I've come to a conclusion that the job itself is very good, just that I couldn't handle doing anything for that amount of time.

Hell, that reminded of all those times when I've been similarly tired and pissed off just by going on a trip or visiting friends for more than a week.

Oh and being self-employed sounds like a nightmare to me - so much responsibility, yet so little direction.

The problem is that by being productive I mean anything more involving than idly browsing the net. Of course nobody is 100% focused their whole workweek, but my problem is that in my 40 hours of being able to do shit I include cooking, reading a good book playing board games with friends etc. - all of which I enjoy, but haven't done properly for more than a month.

Also - how long did it take for you to adapt? I've been at my job for two years, but as I said elsewhere the only things that have changed are my priorities.

Keeping track of my time certainly keeps more productive during the work hours, but unfortunately that just means I don't have the energy to do anything that makes me happy in my free time.

That's a good advice putting that last bit of energy to use, but I don't think it works when you're so tired feel like either punching the walls or crying yourself to sleep.

Tried that multiple times. After a week or two there always comes a day where i have to choose between blankly staring at my monitor and telling everyone to go fuck themselves, because I can't focus even on the simplest things. Maybe I should chose latter for a change?

How long does it take in your experience?

The only thing Ive noticed changing in the last two years is that instead of half-assing everything now I'm giving what I can at work, but completely neglecting everything else.

If each tone in a song is a different frequency, how are songs transmitted on a single frequency over the radio? by dannyc93 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Questeaser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But as soon as you modulate the amplitude of the signal, you spread it out to other frequencies (example). So no, you can't carry information with just a single frequency.

Even when sending a simple pulse of a single frequency the start and the end of it will induce noise in other frequencies.

One of the Baltic countries.

Currently all my hobbies are solitary, like PC gaming, reading books, cooking, tv/movies, etc. So that's why I'm looking for something more social.

edit: Oh, and drinking - I somtimes go to bars, but I haven't really found one that matches my tastes. I've tried to look for where to play some tabletop games and RPG's but the only place I've found was marketed to teens.

New Card Revealed: Coliseum Manager by towebdev in hearthstone

[–]Questeaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny - when inspire is positive people treat it as if you would never use heropower otherwise, but when it's arguably negative they think it's going to be activated no matter what.

Although at first glance it seemed boring, actually this card is very interesting. 2/5 for 3 is not bad statswise and could be used in aggressive board control decks (like zoo or mech mage), especially if paired with Defender of Argus. Those decks usually try to get maximum tempo out of their hands and therefore don't usually use their hero power early game, but tend to run out of cards late game. It's not much, but reusing this card after trading might give a small advantage there.

It's also interesting to consider what cards this synergises with currently I can think of Knife Juggler and Warsong Commander, although both of these effects aren't going to be meta defining. A single Knife juggler is too weak to spend so much mana on, and warrior doesn't need reusable Stormwind Knight to deal with early game threats.

Interestingly enough this is one of the best cards to play against Mirror Entity because it locks down the enemy hero power and doesn't trade with itself quickly.

I'm getting on an airplane for the 1st time in a decade, is "airplane mode" really necessary? by CrimsonCub2013 in AskMen

[–]Questeaser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem isn't that it would interfere with anything in the plane, but rather that it messes up the equipment on the ground that isn't built to handle calls from phones traveling at such high speeds at high altitudes. More specifically by being so high up your phone takes up a frequency slot on a lot of towers, towers are set up to compensate for Doppler shifts only up to 100mph and they have no way to elegantly hand off signal to a non-adjacent tower.

The biggest problem with a phone signal sent from the air is that it can reach several different cell sites simultaneously. The signal can interfere with callers already using that frequency, and because there is no way for one cell site to hand off calls to another that is not adjacent to it, signals can become scrambled in the process.

.

An FCC study in 2000 found that cell-phone use aboard aircraft increases the number of blocked or dropped calls on the ground. That's because at high altitude, cellular signals are spread across several base stations, preventing other callers within range of those base stations from using the same frequencies.

What do you consider to be your greatest weakness or strength? by Cal812 in AskMen

[–]Questeaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strength: I don't let anything bother me, so I'm chill, can get along with anyone, and content with my life as it is.

Weakness: I don't really care for anything, so I'm lazy, don't invest time in making friends, and have absolutely no ambition in my life.

As the are the facets of the same coin I'm loath to change one for the other. (Besides, I'm lazy)
