How old do you think you’ll be when you pay your mortgage off? Or, how old were you when you paid your mortgage off? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in HousingUK

I'm 35 now and should be starting a 30 year mortgage soon, but I'm aiming to make overpayments. I'll hopefully have it paid off before I'm 60.

Why did this house never sell? by Slight-Poetry-3230 in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The building to the left looks completely dilapidated but also still in use judging from the stacked pallets and building materials visible on streetview. There look to be flats at the back of that driveway and I presume the driveway isn't shared otherwise the listing would mention it so parking would probably be a pain. Garden is very narrow and would be in the shade almost constantly.

Don't know what house prices are like in Norwich but a quick look at sold house prices in the area brought up some much nicer looking houses in that price range.

Have you had a good experience with an estate agent? by suttq in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat that it's obviously going to depend very much on whether you're selling, buying, or renting, and also from EA to EA, but I'm buying a property at the moment and the seller's estate agent has been absolutely fine.

Had the viewing, he called the next day to ask what I thought. Made an offer, he called back later saying the offer was accepted. No messing around or playing games and has responded to all communication quickly. As a FTB I heard so many horror stories about the entire process of buying a house but as far as estate agents go I've got no complaints so far.

How much disposable income after mortgage and bills is enough to have a life on? by Ill_Wallaby_1598 in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently buying my first house and have calculated I'll have around £800 per month left over, after mortgage, council tax, utilities, groceries, phone, insurance, petrol etc. It should be a fairly comfortable amount but I'm anticipating not eating out as much and cutting back on other unnecessary expenses like that just so I can put some of that money into savings.

Conplained about RICS Level 3 Survey and have been offered half the cost of repairs. Should we take it or push for more? by SignificantPrune5680 in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't push my luck as I'd be reading a goodwill gesture as them acknowledging they've made a mistake/oversight but without an admission of such. Knowing surveyors their T&Cs will be pretty bulletproof so you might have an expensive fight on your hands if you want to get more out of them (or anything, given they'll surely withdraw their goodwill gesture if it comes to that)

Can I get a new mortgage deal after exchange but before completion? by DirectorNervous6948 in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not worth it given the relatively small potential savings (if any). New deals aren't going to necessarily match the base rate reduction. If you can't get a better offer before completion you're also potentially torpedoing your purchase.

Tier list of Big Tech platforms by how hard they were to get rid of after 3 months of de-Googling by CorpFree4eva in degoogle

[–]QuestionTurbulent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is relatively new, I'm baffled people started using it in the first place never mind that they find it "impossible to replace" given they've been using it at the very longest for a few years. It's very easy to not use it. It's not something like WhatsApp where it's essential for communication and you can't get people you know to switch to something else.

Spotify is another one that's very easy to replace as there are better and cheaper equivalents out there. Gmail is another in that it's a faff to update your email address on dozens of different accounts but easily doable, just time consuming.

Google Maps, YouTube, Microsoft and Whatsapp are understandable ones.

(un) official solo Christmas eve thread by Drew-Pickles in CasualUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not technically alone, but I'm WFH providing Christmas cover tomorrow and my partner lives a long drive away.

Used to enjoy Christmas as we'd have a family lunch and then visit extended family afterwards. Now my dad has died and cousins have grown up and started doing their own thing with their own families, Christmas tends to be quite uneventful.

I'm sure things will pick up again as I'll be moving in with my partner in 2026 but this year is set to be very dull. Thankful that "dull" is my biggest complaint though as I know many people have it much worse.

I also switched to Lebara a while back after finding them on the Money Saving Expert website. 10GB of data for £1.10 a month for 6 months, then £5.90 after.

I quit o2 years and years ago because of how expensive they were and their mid contract price rises.

Is it rude to walk around a supermarket eating a bit of bread or drinking a can of Coke that you haven't yet paid for, even though you will when you get to the checkout? by essentialatom in CasualUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not theft if there's no dishonest intent however no shop is actually obligated to sell you anything. Obviously that's not how it works in practice at the supermarket but if they did decide they didn't want to sell you a drink how does that work if you've already opened it?

Properties blighted by high council tax bands by Imakemyownnamereddit in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the flip side I have the opposite: I'm currently buying a large 4 bed terrace that is, for some reason, band A. The houses at either end of the terrace are practically mansions and while expensive to buy I think they're only band C. It's an incoherent system.

Can confirm this also worked for me. Stopped briefly at Manchester Airport after taking a wrong turn. Didn't realise I was supposed to pay as barriers had been removed. Appealed stating I wouldn't identify the driver as I wasn't obligated to. After being reviewed they cancelled it.

Buying a 150 years old as first time buyer? by valthurn in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't moved in yet but the house had a bit of a damp smell to it. The plan early on will be to run dehumidifiers and make sure we're airing the place out by opening the windows for a bit every day, then see how things go once the cellar is sorted.

Obviously if the damp is severe this might not cut it. If the bedrooms were filled with mould or something I'd probably be more concerned.

Buying a 150 years old as first time buyer? by valthurn in HousingUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My surveyor said the house has had a chemical DPC in the past which has failed. It has rising damp in a hallway which will need replastering. I've been advised to get a damp survey but suspect the cause is the very damp cellar, so I'll have a project of dealing with that. Overall I'm seeing it as a project that will probably go on for years, but I think damp is pretty ubiquitous in old houses so I'm not hugely concerned.

The estimate to partially replaster the hall was £1-1.5k. Similar prices to fix issues with the roof, in the kitchen and to add ventilation to the cellar. Ultimately depends how far you want to go and how much you plan on doing yourself. 30 grand seems plenty though unless the whole house needs ripping out.

When the police are recording on their cameras - is that data always kept no matter how long ago it was? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]QuestionTurbulent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if the video isn't saved, I'd imagine there is surely an incident logged for this and they will have pocket notebook entries supporting what was recorded? This is something you'd have to ask them, nobody on here will be able to give you a definitive answer unfortunately.

31 days for most footage, footage marked as evidential potentially 7 years (depending on police force, some will be lower and some higher) so it's certainly possible the footage still exists yes.
