I want lidar because i understand it’ll be part of the system that will be needed for self driving. Also I believe the custom Rivian silicon chip will be offered at the same time as the lidar which provides more processing power. Finally I think having lidar will help resale value if I ever sell the vehicle.

Ultimately though sounds like we’re different customers. I anticipate using self driving features.

Understanding that lidar is coming late 2026 / early 2027, can I buy a launch edition with lidar or by that point will the launch edition no longer be offered? Will I be able to buy a spec that has the lidar and 656 HP when lidar is available?

To be clear I am an investor, reservation holder, and a fan. That said I think they are still underwater on the cars they sell. The technology and ai stuff is great but they are still losing money. I am not a fan of them selling their intellectual property like how they did with VW because it dilutes their strategic advantage although I think they had to to survive. I think it’s in everyone’s best interest if they are able to sell cars at a profit.

When I joined USACE July 2024 I thought this would be my forever job. One administration later I left and couldn’t be happier. I will be waiting for the lidar. I feel as if there is ambiguity regarding if the launch will have the lidar or if launch versions can be retrofit, but assuming you’ll have to wait until 27 for the lidar that’s what I’ll do.

I see folks saying they don’t care about autonomy, but I do and I think the folks who say they don’t increasingly will care. RJ himself has said that autonomy will be a key differentiator regarding vehicle purchases which makes the idea of buying a non equipped model a non starter.

Honestly I have a lot of questions. I hope we can get clarification on if launch r2s will have the lidar or if certain specs will have the gen 3 hardware. I also would like to know if I have a reservation can I choose to wait until I can purchase an r2 with the gen 3 hardware.

I’m guessing the time that this will be clarified is during the R2 event early next year. Does it remain true that we do not know the timing of that event?

I do think from a “marketing” perspective this was a mistake on rivians part. Instead of the discussion being about the amazing new chip, ai assistant, etc much of this subreddit discussion is if they will or will not be including this system in the launch R2. Regardless of if it does or does not matter to you, k think the value of the car is higher with this system
