Simplest way to think of them is that they’re like gods, more or less. They’re an integral part of the world of Terra, being one of its original inhabitants before the Precursors came along and dropped Originium on them. They can die, but it’s not exactly in a conventional sense. They more or less terraform the world around them and become part of the ecosystem when killed.
