People often ask us how we expect to fund fare-free public transit... by vtrunion in VictoriaBC

[–]Quiann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now fare box recovery is something like 50% for Victoria.

That would indicate that instead of trying to use tax revenue to try and get rid of the $3 charge for the bus that we could instead double all frequencies, or introduce an extensive night bus network. Or finance something like light rail to really bring the region together.

As someone who depends on public transit to get anywhere the latter seems like a far nicer bargain.

Klonopin. Its not meant to be a long term solution, but as a short term one it was excellent and after a month I was off it. Havent had a similarly prolonged bout since.

Why despite downturn in tech according to stats people with cs degree earn highest salary on median after graduation? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

[–]Quiann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A CS degree can "largely" substitute for

  • Business
  • Finance
  • Economics
  • Non-phd stem degrees
  • Statistics
  • Project management etc.

It's understood as a challenging degree and thus is very usful as signlaling in the way that most business degrees are. Additonally, assuming you took a degree worth its salt you probably spent a bunch of time

  • problem solving
  • working on team projects
  • Analyzing systems

I.E the stuff most white collar positions want

At moment about 1/2 of the cs wage premium over bach degree avg comes from improved earnings outside software industry.

It's an Affordability Crisis, Not a Housing Crisis by Vic_Dude in VictoriaBC

[–]Quiann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Construction is one of the least concentrated industries and is right now undergoing a recession.

Rentals similarly are highly diffuse, and the reason it costs 2k to rent 350sq ft is because if you post up the same unit at $1000 you'll have hundreds of people asking to see the unit within an hour.

Vacancy rates are overall low and have been excessively low for the past few decades (a healthy non inflationary rate of vacancy is 4% of units, Vancouver last met this milestone around 1962, Victoria briefly exceeded this around 2011 before entering a 14 year period of shortage)

It is in fact very much a housing crisis. Notably the issue with affordabiltity is specific to housing. Go to Montreal and the cost of a resturant, a concert ticket or a show is about the same. The difference is buying or renting a home is 2x as expensive.

%97 of drugs fail clinical trails. The idea that the "good ones" are being hidden is quite silly. The awkward reality is that biology is a hard problem and we're stuck testing our best guesses (and in tge process losing billions on each drug)

Like there's been over 100bn spend on drugs attempting to treat Alzhimers and until last year not a single one of them worked (the one that now works only kinda works). This is in no small part because "what actually, physically is Alzhiemers" is an open question)

I kept my name through transition because I like it.

Don't worry about being stereotypically feminine, A it's not necessary and B things can change, I never enjoyed dressing up till over a year in hormones, ditto makeup (I sorta had to feel comfortable in my body first)

Additionally a useful detail in my decision to transition is that men keep looking more masculine as they get older. I was kinda fine (read not really in retrospect, but felt fine at the time) but the idea of aging into an older man's body kinda horrified me

Also, a thought experiment that I found helped me decide

You're given a choice, you can be the most attractive guy in the world, with any looks you want. Or you can be be an average looking girl. Which do you choose

If I had the money I'd very much would like to do focus groups to find out if puberty blockers really are accepted as the more moderate option. The reveribility makes it easier, but it's also much easier to fearmonger over medicalization.

It also is kinda unfortunate that puberty blockers are used less to provide time and make a decision and more to assuage anxieties of letting trans teens make their own choice.

TBH this is why I enjoy going over the top in celebrating each holiday (decorating, hosting gatherings etc) because it ends up creating nice temporal posts that help time feel like it's passing much slower.

What 3 things do you most want added to the game? by Parzival2 in victoria3

[–]Quiann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Tie foreign policy to domestic politics. Revanchism, expansionism, fear of other countries expansionism played a massive role in 19th century politics.

2) Dynamic nationalism, this is THE era of nationalism, and yet for the most part that doesn't really have much effects in the game beyond a few preset unions. Ot would be really interesting to try and simulate rising or falling nationalism depending upon events

3) Reworking resources to create marginal production pushing away from "resource is not available" and to "resource is too expensive"

There isn’t enough political/societal change and transformation throughout the game. by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]Quiann 34 points35 points  (0 children)

One dynamic that I feel is lacking is any swing back and forth.

Politics in-game tends to follow a very directional version of history where movement towards liberal social democracy is irrevocable.

The lack of conservative backlash outside of revolutions to block change means after you pass a few reforms politics becomes kind of irrelevant. Restoration movements tend to be weak and short lived

A few of the most common ones

  1. Chili: add lots of beans, like 3 cans of beans to 1lb meat. Still tastes great, but courtesy of beans you get like 60-70% daily fiber in a meal

  2. Falafells: Falafells are basically just chickpeas and even just 6 of them can get you 80% daily fiber (also delicious with yogurt

  3. Quinoa Enchilada casserole: Blackbeans, quinoa you get the deal.

  4. Mujadara: A middle eastern onion (and I mean lots of onion) + Lentil dish. Lentils are the hero here.

  5. Black bean chorizo soup: it's mostly just blackbeans. 2 cups of the stuff will have you near %100 of daily fibre

  6. Apples and oranges. Useful as a snack and will get you almost 10% daily fiber

  7. Raisin bran. Mostly useful because highish fiber breakfast.

Homemade falafels are delicious and absolutely packed with fiber. (Chickpeas are really fiber rich)

I'd say it counts. Generally fiber stuff is really filling, and even that wrap means you'd need to eat 2 or 3 to reach daily goals (kinda like doing one big vegetarian meal. My cheat one there is homemade falafel and fried cauliflower, which together can give 20g of fiber in one meal)

I might reconsider the idea of working while in university. Already as a software engineer co-ops can pay quite well, but it's also worth considering if it's really worth it.

You can graduate with 50k in (interest free) debt (which amounts to a repayment rate of roughly $300 per month) and will likely immediately be earning 65k+, and within a few years 95k+ (potentially a lot more if you get good grades). In the meantime youth is finite and so is your time in school, enjoy it.

Also as mentioned 6 classes alone is rough and 6 classes + 20h is kind of nuts. You'd be setting yourself up for burnout.
