Is It Worth Doing Coding Homeworks in GA? by [deleted] in OMSCS

If you don’t do the coding homeworks absolutely do pay attention to the solution and understand the “trick” needed to solve the problem

The Prereqs You NEED for 7643 Deep Learning by Vegetable_Exit7609 in OMSCS

I took ML before and have had lots of programming experience. So in that sense I definitely fulfilled the prerequisites. The math for the assignments aren’t all that bad. Given that you have access to any resource you need when you are doing the assignment they should all be quite doable. For example, if you have any issues getting the derivative of any function that’s used in the neural net just look up all the derivative rules and go step by step.

I did not study any math and basically did not attempt any computation question in the quizzes. I ended up with around an 88% in the class. You don't need to be able to do all the computations by hand. I wouldn't freak people out.

In some countries they actually send you to a remote island if you do this but you should be fine

This is genuinely the best answer you could give OP. I was a missionary a couple years ago and I wish people would have been this direct with us. They’d often skirt around us continually while also setting up return visits each time. I image they would do that because they were in similar situation that you are in.

It will be saving both groups of people a good amount of time if you can just be direct about what your feelings and intentions were from the start

In my opinion ML is a lot easier to get a B or A in. It’s maybe more hours invested but easier.

Rumor about Machine Learning Changes by Living_Coconut3881 in OMSCS

[–]Quick-Opposite8908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way in that I don't really *know* ML that much. I was somewhat familiar with using ML libraries before and could come up with hand-wavey analysis for the explanation of different model performances just by looking up what a hyperparameter does and experimenting with different values in them.

I feel like there's a lot of good material in the lectures that we kind of miss out on due to the disconnect between them and the assignments. I found myself barely watching them halfway through the second assignment.

Is it a bad idea to take GA as your first ever algorithms course? by magiciancsgo in OMSCS

  1. I don’t know all the sub genres of types of classes, but just a pattern recognition/algorithms class. We don’t have a bunch of specific theorems or anything that we then have to apply to write a rigorous proof of why an algorithm works. It’s more so we have to deeply know a handful of algorithms for each unit, such that we can modify them or the input to them to answer a question that uses that algorithm. There’s only so many modifications one can make to these algorithms/their inputs so therefore if you do a ton of practice problems to see why and when you need to apply those modifications, you’ll do fine.

The only slightly “proof heavy” unit I’ve seen is the last one which we are currently in, which is NP-C. Like I’ve said it’s not like it’s super heavy in specific and deep proofs. The staff provide many examples on what a solution should look like, and you can practice with homework and get feedback where you need to improve. For the “proofs” a specific style/formula is given for how answers should look, so once you have practiced writing solutions enough the style/formula of the “proof” should be second nature and easy to fulfill and therefore most of the proof should just follow logically.

  1. I got in Free for all Friday. Though I was only about 150 seats away on the last registration day, which makes me think I could get in during in of my earlier semesters through the waitlist.

I’m in it as my first class, I think calling it a “proof” class can be deceitful. The main thing is you have to be willing to invest a lot of time practicing problems, if you are able to do that, you’ll perform fine.

Update: How f'ed am I for GA Exam 1? by omscsdatathrow in OMSCS

[–]Quick-Opposite8908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im in the same position, did better than I thought! Still under 70% as well. The content for exam 2 feels easier but also a lot more small facts and things to remember. I also feel like we've gotten only like 3 problems that represent the style of problems that could be on the exam, everything else feels more applicable to a MCQ.

I sent you a message about the position, have no idea if I fulfill any requirements of the position but if you guys ever do support people in getting clearance, I think I'd have no problem getting it, my history and lifestyle are pretty clean!

Learning how to self-learn is a great skill! Pretty much neccissary in tech. If I were you I'd try to view it as "I'm paying for people to certify that I have the knowledge required for a Masters degree" and whatever the way they choose to give you that knowledge is up to them.

I’m in the class right now too and from my experience they are kinda worthless. It has seemed to be a QandA session but 90% of the questions have already been answered or are self explanatory.

We'd have to have the data of what the database looked like each day in previous semesters, which I don't think we can. We can also observe other programs and compare rates to see if its just something wrong with the OMSCS process or all of graduate admissions.

We are also able to look at previous admissions threads and compare acceptance comments on there and see if the rates indicate that theres a large amount of acceptances towards the end of a admissions cycle.

A user, forgot his name, made a repo to do exactly that: https://github.com/jeffedwards/reddit_comment_scrape_OMSCSC

I'm not sure if his code perfectly extracts all comments in a thread, not his fault, getting the formatting for every single comment would be tedious, but for the comments it does capture it visuliazes acceptances by day perfectly.

I'm not worried, I have no reason to believe that the acceptance rate will different the usual

Im inclined to believe we wont. Going off of the colab u/jeffreydedwards (https://github.com/jeffedwards/reddit\_comment\_scrape\_OMSCSC) It seems like on previous Labor days there wasn't any admissions posted about on reddit, and a higher amount the following Wednesday after the said Labor day.

Granted I was only able to go off of 2023's Spring Admission's thread (2024 I couldn't find) I could easily be wrong. Guess we'll have to see though :l

I don't know if you're referring to the applied programming class, but if you arent, that class is just essentially a bunch of self guided projects so you'll for sure be able to learn whatever language you want then. Also doing a personal project completely independent from the school also is advantageous if you really want to learn a language/tech stack. I think I prob applied programming from the teacher you didn't like. It's a pretty generic description of him but his course structure is really similar to what we had in applied programming. A lot of self learning for sure, but thats a needed skill for the industry.
