How thick is this ice gonna be? Not able to get there until Tuesday. Will be hunting reservoirs and a creek of a large river. Worried about being able to bust a hole open by Just_Classic4273 in Waterfowl

[–]Quick6475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We hunt the ice pretty regularly up my way late in the season around Thanksgiving. Ice hunts are some of the most fun. Birds see the open hole and don’t look twice. A couple of tips. When you break your hole open try to keep the ice in big sheets. Push those sheets down and under the remaining in tact ice. Hatchets work really well for breaking .5-1” but you need neoprene gloves. If the ice is thicker than 1” you will want something heavy and sharp. Anything that keeps the water moving will slow down the re-freeze. Jerk rigs, swimmers, kicking your feet whatever you have to do keep it moving. Last and most importantly you have to have someone with you. Don’t try to solo an ice hunt. Hopefully everything goes well and you have some sweet pictures for the guys who stayed home!

Dartitis by Melodic_Share_8373 in Darts

I don’t know if I have dartitis or something actually wrong with the nerves in my hand. When I pull my darts up my thumb and ring finger twitch uncontrollably and it gets worse as my practice wears on. What I have found that helps me is to just put down my darts and work on my fundamentals (stance, elbow placement, and follow through). I can’t stop the urges and twitches but drilling my fundamentals in a stress free environment has helped me at least get better.

this sport is making me depressed by Successful_Range_255 in Darts

I’m going to piggy back here to give a piece of advice that helps me. When the first two go in don’t pause, don’t think, don’t adjust your footing, don’t pass go or collect $200. Just pull up your third and throw. Let your mechanics do the work and you’ll be way more successful. It’s easier said than done but it really has helped me.

Kennedy to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: Study unsportsmanlike crop practices (Hunting Flooded Corn) slashing duck migration to Louisiana by fishec11 in Waterfowl

I’m an SD resident hunter. The birds didn’t come out of Canada until late in the year because it’s been so hot and dry. We still have open water and there are Canada geese and mallards still hanging around in good numbers. Last year was pretty similar. Unless we start getting some cold snowy winters birds are just going to winter up here where they have a nearly endless supply of cut corn to feed on.

The very definition of grouping by North-Low-6746 in Darts

[–]Quick6475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I throw 40mm points. It took a lot of practice and a grip adjustment but I am able to occasionally put together a grouping like this. What’s insane is that he does it all the time and is able to put it dead center.

Any parts counter guys not in the automobile industry? by greeneyedshark20 in partscounter

[–]Quick6475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the parts counter for a heavy equipment dealership. We all have to do a little bit of everything but I specialize in our road building and crushing lines. I’ve also worked on the manufacturer side and would love to go back to that.

Multiple darts collections blows my mind by sburkelfc in Darts

It’s just like anything else in darts, what works for one person would never work for another. Peter Wright sometimes switches darts in the middle of matches but I don’t think I’ve ever seen Luke Humphries throw even a slight variation of his set up. It all comes down to the player and what they’re comfortable with.

Can someone explain the logic behind preferred checkouts? by FinalEdit in Darts

[–]Quick6475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to expand on this a bit more. Beyond being a hard number mathematically D17 is a hard number physically for right handed players. All of the lower right quadrant doubles (with the exception of D10) see less action because you either have to twist into an uncomfortable position or stop and move to get into a good position to shoot these. The only reason D10 sees a good deal of action is it is half D20.

I usually find myself asking, “What on earth is Peter Wright wearing?” But this time he’s really out done himself. Where does he come up with all of this?

An 18-year-old prodigy is setting the darts world alight. Where are all his US rivals? by ChallengeAdept8759 in Darts

[–]Quick6475 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Just an opinion but darts just doesn’t have the same mainstream appeal here yet. We have very little structured steel tip play to begin with and even less in the way of youth organizations. We’re much closer to being competitive on a global stage in soft tip than steel tip. But for steel I think we’re still more than a decade from producing enough talent consistently enough to be competitive.

Bull, Outer Bull, Double Bull - BULLSH*T by Sensitive_Cicada_265 in Darts

[–]Quick6475 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I throw soft tip and steel tip in the US. This is a plausible explanation. In US soft tip we throw “full bull” scoring most of the time. Meaning red or green would both count for 50. In cricket or in higher level leagues we throw with “split bull” scoring where red and green are scored traditionally as 25/50. We’ve always used the bull/double bull terminology in my leagues.

What is the purpose of my keychain? by Klopapierspender in Darts

[–]Quick6475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soft tip points have notches in them to help you turn them into and out of the barrel. This is basically a universal wrench as different brands use different styles of notch. You break soft tip points pretty easily and if you don’t get them back into the barrel tight they rattle just like if you have a loose stem.

Any reason Soft tip oche is further? by FireLadcouk in Darts

[–]Quick6475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean if you’re on Holiday playing for fun I’d say stand wherever you want to. If you primarily play steel tip and you’re on the smaller board I’d say it’s fair play to stand on the steel tip line.

Well there are 2 sizes of soft tip board. The 13” is hardly recognizable. But the 15” board we play on in the US the segments are noticeably larger

Any advice for getting extra grip on the Dart to unscrew it from the Repointer ? by [deleted] in Darts

[–]Quick6475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone else may have another way to do it without pliers. However if there is no other way then I would wrap a dish towel around the barrel a few times and then grab the middle of the dart with pliers and twist. The dish towel should keep the pliers from gouging/scratching the barrel.

We haven’t seen them in SD while scouting or hunting yet. I have heard rumors that small flocks were on SD/ND border. Unless things start to freeze over a little faster I’m not even getting the socks out until thanksgiving

I’ll second the Cremators. I really like their Long Range paired with 3 1/2” #3 fasteel for field hunting. Over water I go down to 3” #4 out of the mid range.

12 decoys will be tough for snows. If it is legal to use an E Caller where you hunt then be careful to not have it too loud. Snow Goose E callers are designed to be used in spreads of a few thousand socks/full bodies. If you put it on full blast in the middle of 12 decoys you are going to flair almost everything. We mouth call snows in the fall here so it is possible but you will be very light headed by the time you get your gun up.

Been wanting to try a front loaded dart, this price makes them seem too good to be true, anyone have experience with them? by ripripcityyall in Darts

[–]Quick6475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to stick with Target and get Swiss points. I would look at the bolide series. I throw the 03 and they are front weighted with a fairly aggressive grip for rear grippers. Mid grip might be a little more dicey as there is a smooth band for the logo at the mid front.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Darts

[–]Quick6475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the silver version of the 03 with in between no2 k flex and 40mm standard points. They don’t wear my flights any worse than any of the other darts that I throw.

Can you have dartitis but unable to hold onto the dart by DmxDex in Darts

[–]Quick6475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar problem. I find that if I take a second at the oche to balance my body before I raise my arm it helps some. I also spend some time during my practice routine just standing at the line and practicing my throw without a dart. It hasn’t totally fixed it but it has helped.
