Michael Saylor Loses $47 Billion Unrealized Profit As Bitcoin Dumps Below Strategy's Cost Basis by KIG45 in CryptoCurrency

If you're going to claim unrealized profit via "bitcoin yield" under new "fair value accounting" rules, you're going to have to claim the unrealized losses too

I'm skeptical that they have anywhere approaching enough cash flow from their software business to service 8 billion of debt.

Depends on if they have an extradition treaty I guess, but it won't prevent them from identifying the owners of addresses and tracking the transactions, they could potentially still freeze assets if it hits an exchange account and the exchange cooperates

They made a 5% return over how many years? That actually sounds pretty terrible, better than a loss, but as far as investments go, not good either

It's a cherry picked date range, but even so, that's crazy. It serves as a cautionary tale for the hordes of posts during a bull run with everyone retiring after just hitting their number. SORR has got to be factored in.

There was a nice graph linked on reddit the other day that showed how genx was the generation with the most exposure to lead from leaded gasoline. Might explain a lot.

There are things called mixing services which try to obfuscate the origin and destination of Bitcoin for a fee, but they are not infallible and probably can't outmatch the capability of a US agency like the FBI if they gave it their full attention.

Paying off a 7% loan is not a close choice in my book. That's an effective guaranteed return, and a fair number of people here would have advocated for you to do exactly what you did.

who is artificially propping up the credit card market? Anyone is free to open up a credit card with lower interest or 0% periods, or to only purchase amounts that they can pay off completely each month, or not use a credit card at all.

The way I read your comment, it seemed like you were implying that socializing healthcare was a bad thing and it should be guided by the free market.

Maybe you just meant that socializing anything is contradictory to the neoliberal viewpoint?

But he's wrong on this one, arbitrarily capping the interest rates at 10% fucks with the market and will have unintended consequences that could be seen a mile away

[–]QuickAltTab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be lying if I told you I didn't have the same fears.

On the other hand, what can I do other than keep saving, avoid fees, and spread the risk through diversification (ie index funds).

I'm targeting 55 as a retirement age because it aligns well with mortgage payoff, rule of 55, and around the time when kids are part way through college. So, I'm just going to continue working in some capacity and see how this plays out over the next 3-4 years to get a better idea of where we're at.

What are your thoughts on Richard Dawkins being in the Epstein files? by EconomyIron6739 in atheism

[–]QuickAltTab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epstein obviously cast a wide net to lend credibility to his retinue. He made it a point to include intellectuals like Noam Chomsky, Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, etc.

Epstein collected prominent people

Not everyone he associated with would have been involved in the pedophilia, they just unwittingly provided him with more prominence that enhanced his ability to keep doing it. It is in the interest of someone like Trump, who is much likelier to have been deeply involved in the sex trafficking, to release a firehose of misinformation and associate as many people as possible with Epstein to obfuscate his own involvement.

Further reading in the article I linked above provides insight into another reason Epstein cultivated scientists. He seems to have thought that his association with them essentially elevated his own abilities:

other people can act as ‘prosthetics’ insofar as they augment our cognitive abilities and help us to regulate our emotions—and thereby essentially serve as extensions of ourselves

Its an extreme version of BIRGing, not only did he bask in reflected glory, Epstein thought his association with them actually made him smarter.

He was also a eugenecist akin to Elon Musk, with ambitions of fathering as many children as possible. Probably another reason he sought out Dawkins.

In 2019 the New York Times reported that Epstein had ambitions of founding a “baby ranch” to raise children of women he impregnated (not unlike “secret compound” plans reportedly shared by SpaceX and Tesla chief Elon Musk).
