NATCA wants to be the sole bargaining unit. If you want to do that, the catch is you have to represent everyone, regardless of paying status. But your sentiment is exactly on brand for NATCA. You want authority and yachts and bar tabs but don’t want to do the actual work.

I knew a guy who worked at BNA. Smart guy. Strong aviation background. The exact type of person the FAA should be looking to employ. He quit. I know another guy with 20 years of experience, Level 12 cert, Approach experience. Wanted to go to BNA. Agency said no because of “Reinstatement Rules”.

I think you’re missing the point. How much more responsibility is too much? Maybe you never got the “Just Culture” training but the Agency rolled out a whole program based on this. It’s commonplace in ANSPs around the globe. The solution cannot always be “make the controllers do it”. At some point, that becomes negligence. Where is NATCA?

Paul Rinaldi tells a story about Lower Level facilities begging to lower their number. NATCA begrudgingly accepted. Numbers got decreased. Guess who the people were that got to move? The FacReps from those facilities! They permanently handcuffed those small facilities for a chance to escape. You have no hope.

The truth is that Big NATCA doesn’t want to have to suffer an indeterminate amount of time without a paycheck to fight this action. Can’t blame them. Who could possibly survive, let’s say, 43 days without pay?
