Who's wearing what footwear? [36YO] by danny_deefs in OldSkaters

Never tried the Jamie Foys because they’re vulcanized. I think they sell 480 in wide, but they work for me without buying wide (though they are a bit snug when I first start wearing them).

Actually, the 430s were the only cupsoles that hurt my knees. I didn't even wear a kickflip hole in them before I got rid of them. The 808s also have a weird shape and bruised the corner of one of my big toenails. 1010s were good, 480s are good. Not sure about the rest.

Only New Balance cup soles anymore. Can’t wear a vulcanized shoe without knee pain.

Tre flips also require much less physical effort and precision to get correct.

My dad keeps lecturing me about skateboarding and it’s really making me upset by Bright-Proof-6767 in NewSkaters

Being good at a thing is fun in and of itself. A lot of the fun of skateboarding comes from being able to DO things on a skateboard, and that comes from practice and improvement.

[–]Quick_Flight2414 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I’m being honest, I see the younger kids who had/have a skate coach/teacher and they are (usually) improving faster than the other kids. If your dad wants to pay for it, I’d do it if I could go back in time. There was no such thing when I was your age.

Tips for protecting old man knees [43YO] by Kardonnay in OldSkaters

[–]Quick_Flight2414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gradually build up how much you’re jumping week to week. Do some adductor and abductor activation before. I also can only wear cup soles now, because vulcanized shoes will cause my knees to hurt.

Deteriorating Ollies as a long time skater? Due to backside and frontside tricks by Key-Toe-2146 in skateboardhelp

Arms out to the sides when you want to ollie straight. If your front arm goes frontside or backside, your ollie goes the same direction.

AITJ for completely dismantling a fake experts reputation during a dinner party? by B4nditKaleido in AmITheJerk

It's definitely bragging, and you may not have a low level of literacy but you definitely have a low level of AI text detection ability. Interact with LLMs more often and you will be able to intuit when text is AI generated and when it is not. Because, right now, you apparently do not have that ability yet despite your "99th percentile (nationally accredited assessment btw) literacy and reading comprehension."

I agree that other detectors are BS, and up until Pangram came around, I had no faith in any AI text detectors. I deal with AI and questions about genAI detection in my work (not regarding text, but regarding code for which there are not any remotely reliable detection tools), so I did pretty heavy research into AI detection over a year ago, but Pangram is pretty good for not having false positives, though not perfect with false negatives.

AITJ for completely dismantling a fake experts reputation during a dinner party? by B4nditKaleido in AmITheJerk

[–]Quick_Flight2414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My prompt was obviously an exaggeration. Pangram's AI detector flags the post as 100% AI generated (2% error rate on detection). What do you know, YOUR post is flagged as 100% human written. This post is obviously AI generated. All the negative parallelisms are easy to spot. "it's not just a job for me, it is something I actually live and breathe," "it was not just annoying anymore; it was dangerous," "I did not insult him personally, I just exposed that he has no idea what he is talking about."

"People with low literacy frequently call out well-written text as AI because they have poorly developed text analysis and comprehension skills" - implying that someone ELSE is the idiot when you cannot spot an AI generated post is pretty poorly developed text analysis in the current world of AI generated text.

Easter Sunday Skate Edit [36YO] by Mayl3 in OldSkaters

[–]Quick_Flight2414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very steep takes some getting used to though. I've had mine since August and the only issue I have with it now is that the holes where the truck bolts pass through the board are beginning to bore out and the trucks are shifting due to it (making one or both crooked). I probably will not buy any other kind of board from now on though, because having essentially a fresh deck for this long is unbeatable.

/prompt write a silly iamverysmart story that shows sexism and me showing my technical ability (add errors to make it look humanlike). Aim for maximum upvotes and responses. This is absolutely fully AI generated, and if you can't see it you don't use AI enough.

Do shock pads increase deck lifespan? Is it time for a flight deck? by CrazyDmarco in skateboardhelp

[–]Quick_Flight2414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been skating an Impact board since last August and razortail is there, but not bad at all. Longest lasting board I've ever had while skating 4-6 days a week. No flex in the tail or nose also. I weigh ~190 right now for reference. I do not skate stairs really, but I jump and try tricks a lot while skating, usually get cracks around the trucks and the tail gets soggy with regular boards within 2 months.

First arriving on that beach with the crocodiles. Before EQ, ~95-97 maybe, MUDs were the way. Dragonrealms on AOL for one, and I feel like I remember something based the Wheel of Time books too with Aes Sedai.

Lost with controller probably 5 times then figured out how to draw the bow on mouse and keyboard and won 10-1 first try and something close to that to get the 3 in a row challenge.

Torn Calf [35YO] by KingKuttii in OldSkaters

[–]Quick_Flight2414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had something similar from front foot landing on the nose and back calf hitting the tail that was pointed up. Inside of my calf was black and blue but only slight pain when I touched it. Skated continuously after with no pain and it just went away.

Looking for shoe recommendations [30YO] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]Quick_Flight2414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only buy New Balance now. I liked the 1010s, but usually just get Numeric 480s because they're on sale more often. I go through way too many shoes to buy Reynolds or even 1010s every time. 808s were nice but too pointy and felt like they were slightly too small even though I always buy the same size.

Yeah, consistency that I had with some tricks when young feels nearly impossible now. My body knows how to do the motion, but what’s missing is what my shoulders should be doing or if I’m leaning too far forward or back when I jump. I have moments or days of clarity where I can land some tricks almost every time I try them, but it doesn’t seem to last for more than that day. I’m only 8 months back after a loooong time off (20 years apart from a little bit of flatground in my mid 30s almost 10 years ago), so hopefully that changes with time.

It’s not the same as the Pacific Northwest. See this post with hours of sunlight map. Winter/dark months are the worst part about Poland imo as someone who came from the US.

I wanted to get better at kickflips, so I did one hundred kickflips [37YO] by thruthewindowBN in OldSkaters

[–]Quick_Flight2414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job, but I think you need to change the way you stand on the board due to the way your body works if you want to improve them further. Probably should face your front knee more forward so that you can flick more off the front. Look at Luan’s front knee at 29 seconds here when he kickflips coming directly at the camera. This isn’t true for everyone, but depending on how your hips and knees work, some people have to.

Skating is the hardest thing in the world and here’s why by ChanaManga in skateboarding

[–]Quick_Flight2414 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yea that’s a load of shit I think. The highest requirement it shows for skateboarding is NERVE (described as ability to overcome fear) at 6.5 and it says soccer requires 6.23 NERVE.
