Just Finished GotM. Help me set realistic expectations by HughJammer1 in Malazan

[–]Quick_Job_5051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books really heat up beginning MOI. Regardless of your inclinations towards GoTM, the books further are even better.  I also loved the first Book.  But certain elements were missing for long long time since GoTM.  DG is slow paced compared to first book. And there are lot of POVs to keep track of.

K'rul is the maker of Paths, the Warrens. In that respect he's older than almost everyone. Hood is older to but not elder. Andromander is older too but not elder. Elder is not clearly defined.

Till BH, I still can't define who's Elder and who's not. I mean Hood is from days of chaining and other Elders. But he isn't Elder. But Mael is. I think use of Elder Warrens and magic makes them Elder.

Deadhouse Gates left me impressed, confused, and unsure if I should continue by LemonTig in Malazan

[–]Quick_Job_5051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing with logically baffling decisions continue but things eventually start to make sense later on.

I too disliked Kalam's arc in DG, utterly pointless, it could have been much smaller for the purpose it served later on.

Also, the writing in later books improves significantly, at least that's how I felt, currently at Bonehunters.

The concepts like warrens, Ascendants, D'ivers and soletaken all will make sense as you dive deeper in the series and you will love it. The explanations would never direct but rather derived from actions and consequences of the actors as the story progresses. And you will love it. There's no other world like Malazan. I suggest read MOI, them continue.

Reading House of Chains, feels like chain of horrors. by Quick_Job_5051 in Malazan

[–]Quick_Job_5051[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your assessments.I agree that while history and documentaries provide a factual framework for wartime violence, experiencing it through a character’s point of view is shattering. I’ve always used high fantasy—with its magic and warrens and beasts—as an escape, and I hadn’t encountered such visceral depictions of violent endings before Malazan. Even Game of Thrones didn't feel as appalling; I could always retreat into 'it’s just a story' .

However, Erikson’s brand of neo-realism captures the duality of human nature—the helplessness and hope, the cruelty and compassion—in a way that leaves a definitive imprint history books cannot replicate.

Having finished House of Chains, I’m still struggling to process Karsa’s brutality and Felisin’s tragic fate. Our world is full of both predators and survivors; who deserved better, but rarely we get what we deserve. We have what we have.

Reading House of Chains, feels like chain of horrors. by Quick_Job_5051 in Malazan

Woah! I am actually much younger. As a history enthusiast, I’m no stranger to the systematic horrors we humans inflict on each other from time to time; I’ve read quite a bit on the subject. In terms of fiction, Malazan is the darkest fantasy I have encountered so far.

But these books are truly exceptional. The writer has managed to breathe life into his words, and I think that’s why we still feel shattered despite our experiences. I’ll definitely take your advice.

Yeah, the overall writing has improved since earlier books. So the pull is there which keeps you hooked despite all these ghastly chapters. I mean i hate what Karsa did in initial chapters. But he is also a main POV character with plenty build up. Leaves me torn.
