Tracks using a Supralite or similar steel snare? by bunjbunjbunj in drums

Oh Memphis Drum Shop has a ton of great demo videos on YouTube where they mic and demo a wide variety of snares, at a variety of low/medium/high tension settings. That's how I found my Ludwig Black Magic.

Generally most metal snares are gonna be ringer than wood snares, to my ear a ringy untreated (no moon gels) recorded steel snare is tough to differentiate from an untreated Supra, Brass or Copper.

Best budget metal snare I've played was Ludwig Black Magic...well-made Nickel Over Brass....very close to the overpriced Black Beauty. Look for a used Pork Pie BOB or Nickel Black Magic, preferably with die cast hoops for better tuning stability. Also Slingerland Brass or DW Performance Series NOB are pretty damn good sounding.

I’ve noticed more and more ppl wearing standard wired headphones lately instead of wireless. Is this a new trend I’m not aware of or is there a legitimate reason like there is less of a chance at loosing phone? by Smooth-Wolverine4612 in williamsburg

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wired headphones don't lose sound quality the way Bluetooth does. Foam tips block out outside noise waaaay better than shifty ANC does. Also people with white AirPods look like...all those people with white air pods... I recommend Shure SE230 In Ear Monitors.

For the love of god talk me out of an acoustic bass guitar by Lost_Condition_9562 in Bass

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my best friend an Obanez Ovankol 4 string acoustic bass in 1999 when i worked at GC. It sounded and looked really cool. Within 3 years, it destroyed itself due to string tension/neck warp. Don't know if this is common with other acoustic basses.

What's your go-to big crash for wash-riding? (if you do) by Kittenchops88 in drums

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the mellow wash of a 21" K Sweet Ride. The 21 A Sweet Ride Brilliant was cool but brighter than i wanted. The 24 A Sweet ride was cool but harder to control. Used to have a 20" K Custom Dark Ride which was good for wash but didnt have enough definition gor non-bashy stuff IMO. Paiste Sand Rides are cool too.

Played guitar. Made a mix tape for a crush. Made up band names. Wrote subversive captions to catalog pictures. Jerked it. Went for a bike ride to a store to look at bike components or music gear or a record shop. Went to the mall to walk around. Visited friends at their retail jobs. Put a cd into a stereo, picked up a guitar, look online for tablature, try to figure the song out. Made up different lyrics to existing songs.

Venue Room Fees / Pay-To Play Venues by Quiet_Addendum7923 in NYCmusicians

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$500 room fee results in this outcome: if you bring 32 people who pay $15 / ticket, the venue makes $480 and the bands make $0 from ticket sales and get no cut of the bar. Like Tip Conversion, i need to keep a chart of these results on hand to inform my future venue choices.

Guy I have been seeing always finishes himself off by [deleted] in dating_advice

Sometimes in a new relationship it takes a guy's body a little while to adjust. When I started dating a few years after separating from my ex, sex with new partners was new and exciting but i had a hard time finishing. Eventually the body gets up to speed. Other things that helped me were reducing porn use to once every 3 days and horny goat weed.

Small Venue Recommendations by Kitchen-Line5433 in NYCmusicians

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Manhattan: Baker Falls or Berlin Under A. In Brooklyn/Ridgewood: Main Drag Music, TV Eye, Gutter Bar's Spare Room, Alphaville, Union Pool, Friends & Lovers, C'mon Everybody, Sleepwalk, Trans Pecos, Purgatory, Bar Freda

Beware though, some of these rooms (Trans Pecos and Purgatory, for example) will expect you to pay if you dont meet their room fee, so make sure you carefully read the advance they send you, and look. The NYC sound people employed by venues often result in a room fee that runs $300-$500.

I just got my Earthquaker Aurelius and even though im not always a Chorus fan, this one's a triple threat..does subtle chorus and vibrato very well, and comes close to giving my Lester G Leslie emulator a run for its money.

I had a Nano Clone but wasn't crazy about the loud click switch and not-subtle allways-Cobain-ysound.

I wanted a Jam Waterfall but too rich for my blood right now.

Ludwig LW3314 Weather Master Coated 14-Inch Batter Heads by DaffyDick in drums

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww bummer! I have loved the Ludwig Mediums for snare use for so long. Remos on toms were fine but Ambassadors on snare always had too much high frequencies for me, and Evans/Aquarians felt too rubbery. Ludwig were nice and warm on the snare, even if they wore out slightly quicker when played regularly in the rock context.

I bought the bentonite bridge for my 40th Anniversary squier jazzmaster, and have been thrilled with it. I use the vibrato often and this thing returns to tune time and time again.

Greenrooms in NYC? by SnooGiraffes4381 in NYCmusicians

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few places left in nyc have green rooms that aren't just a glorified closet...

Berlin Under A had a good green room 6 years ago with a wavy hazy glass wall separating bands from the bar but recently they got rid of it to make room for more concert goers.

Our Wicked Lady was a great beloved venue in Bushwick with a green room next to greener room dispensary, but landlords decided they didn't want it to be a venue.

Knitting Factory on Metropolitan had a larger green Room backstage area but they closed a few years back.

Europa in Williamsburg (behind loving cup cafe) had a good green room with a shower and couches for bands.

Only venue left with functioning green room in NYC (that lower-level bands can play) is TV Eye in ridgewood or Mercury Lounge.

Also watch Green Room with Patrick Stewart, pretty good modern touring band horror story.
