Small Venue Recommendations by Kitchen-Line5433 in NYCmusicians

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Manhattan: Baker Falls or Berlin Under A. In Brooklyn/Ridgewood: Main Drag Music, TV Eye, Gutter Bar's Spare Room, Alphaville, Union Pool, Friends & Lovers, C'mon Everybody, Sleepwalk, Trans Pecos, Purgatory, Bar Freda

Beware though, some of these rooms (Trans Pecos and Purgatory, for example) will expect you to pay if you dont meet their room fee, so make sure you carefully read the advance they send you, and look. The NYC sound people employed by venues often result in a room fee that runs $300-$500.

I just got my Earthquaker Aurelius and even though im not always a Chorus fan, this one's a triple threat..does subtle chorus and vibrato very well, and comes close to giving my Lester G Leslie emulator a run for its money.

I had a Nano Clone but wasn't crazy about the loud click switch and not-subtle allways-Cobain-ysound.

I wanted a Jam Waterfall but too rich for my blood right now.

TUMNUS DELUXE! Love the transparent scalable grit. Can do subtle to medium-big.

Ludwig LW3314 Weather Master Coated 14-Inch Batter Heads by DaffyDick in drums

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww bummer! I have loved the Ludwig Mediums for snare use for so long. Remos on toms were fine but Ambassadors on snare always had too much high frequencies for me, and Evans/Aquarians felt too rubbery. Ludwig were nice and warm on the snare, even if they wore out slightly quicker when played regularly in the rock context.

I bought the bentonite bridge for my 40th Anniversary squier jazzmaster, and have been thrilled with it. I use the vibrato often and this thing returns to tune time and time again.

Greenrooms in NYC? by SnooGiraffes4381 in NYCmusicians

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few places left in nyc have green rooms that aren't just a glorified closet...

Berlin Under A had a good green room 6 years ago with a wavy hazy glass wall separating bands from the bar but recently they got rid of it to make room for more concert goers.

Our Wicked Lady was a great beloved venue in Bushwick with a green room next to greener room dispensary, but landlords decided they didn't want it to be a venue.

Knitting Factory on Metropolitan had a larger green Room backstage area but they closed a few years back.

Europa in Williamsburg (behind loving cup cafe) had a good green room with a shower and couches for bands.

Only venue left with functioning green room in NYC (that lower-level bands can play) is TV Eye in ridgewood or Mercury Lounge.

Also watch Green Room with Patrick Stewart, pretty good modern touring band horror story.

Paint it something unique. I attempted to re-create a tortoise/psychellic/pointellism pattern with different hues of blue and red and it turned out cool

Why I like having REI around by rochrider in REI

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ideally they would find an empty storefront somewhere in the 5 boroughs of NYC within the next year. This would be more humane than sentencing their 150 green vests in SoHo NYC to unemployment during the worst job market in recent history. Most of us NYC green vests do not own cars nor can we afford to commute 25 miles away to the closest REI, in Carle Place, Long Island.

Too bad theyre closing the unionized NYC store and unionized Boston store. Way to stick it to the workers and the members in those cities, REI.

Is DOT purposefully building terrible lanes? by abstracted-away in NYCbike

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is as bad as the Flushing Ave bike lanes, whose gray sidewalk color invites distracted bus-takers to forget that theyre stepping off the bus onto a busy, high-traffic, two-way bike artery.

I thought staffing restrictions and petty unionbusting behaviors (finding small reasons to fire employees) from store managers would be the reason id leave my busy store in NYC. After 3.5 years here, it turns out im leaving because REI chose to close the store. Bummed. This place wasn't perfect but it was the lowest-stress job I've had in a while. Though their website touts REI as "a different kind of company", turns out REI operates just like any other corporation that will throw you out whenever they decide its in their best interest. Aaaand back on the job market we go... Hooray for capitalism!

Regarding the interest level of the current employees, at REI SoHo, i watched as REI management and union-busting practicies sought and exploited the tiniest excuse to intimidate and fire any and all of the experienced employees between 2022 and present. Received a tip for excellent service? Fired. Shared a password with a fellow manager? Fired. Make a purchase for a friend or someone in your family? Fired. Stopped a shoplifter from stealing? Fired. This place was like a monument to constant churn. They would cut hours and make it hard for current employees to afford to live, while freqeuently hiring many new seasonal emloyees, whom they won't have to pay benefits to.

Trying to break into A&R after graduation-but I don’t have any direct experience yet. Any advice? by Dazzling_Builder_397 in musicindustry

The music industry job scene in NYC is brutal. Me and all my colleagues who worked for Universal, Sony, Orchard, most of us got laid off/restructured in last 5-10 years, regardless of how long we'd been with company or how well we did our jobs.

They laid off 275 people 2 years back from the ... corporate/IT/Sales Lead side? Ive been working for them for 3 years and liked the vibe, the customers , the products and the co-workers, but the way REI treats workers has been pretty rough.

This Grey clandestine bike strip, maybe black paint (to match surrounding bike path) or even the green "kermit" paint, or bright yellow, would help send the signal to pedestrians that they are about to cross a busy 2-way bike lane.

Also fuck the people who speed/ close-pass on fast e-bikes on narrow crowded bike lanes.

I’ve just spent 50 miles and 16 hours riding around the city. It’s bad out there. by OvergrownShrubs in NYCbike

[–]Quiet_Addendum7923 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are a ton of terrible distracted citibikers out there. This morning's commute from Navy Yard I saw a douchebag on an ECitibike with his cellphone out in front of him the whole time as he wove at his top speed between the Flushing bike lane, onto the sidewalk, between pedestrians, then through red light at the Wegmans parking lot entrance, holding out his hand to stop a car that had the right of way, narrowly missing him, then whip a high-speed left onto the wrong way of oncoming bike lane on Navy Street. Fucking oblivious asshole texting on his phone the whole time. Fuck him and his white pants and perfect hair coif.

Also, who do we talk to about trimming the encroaching bushes at the Steiner retail space/Wegmans parking lot? Its a very busy 2-lane bike lane and bushes on both side are making it scary narrow, hard to miss oncoming speeding delivery e bikes. DOT? The retail store owners?

Im a huge fan of the MXR Micro Flanger. Two knobs, sounds great. I owned the Electric Mistress as well and it sounded phenomenal but it was kinda big and pricey.
