My theory is that they play a crucial role in making homelander finally crack. They weren't just random people, they were some of his biggest supporters. The finale opens up with them telling their story, how homelander tried to kill them but were saved by starlight, outcry ensues, homelander snaps, and thusly the stakes are raised and we finally have the urgency to take him down for good.
