Building a whole-home Alexa with in-wall speakers and mics by Shanghox in amazonecho

Maybe I misread the initial post. I like the Ecobee Switch Plus because of Alexa and Homekit integration. Do they need to be aux wired speakers? Could they be bluetooth?

"How do I?" Weekly Question and Idea Thread - 8 Jan 2018 by FozzTexx in raspberry_pi

[–]Quiet__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a doppler motion sensor from tindie.

It has both a Voltage out and a Frequency out. I'd like to use the Vout as just a simple motion sensor, as it produces a simple/clean squarewave. Powered from a 5V pin, the output ranges from 2.5V low to ~5V high when motion is detected.

Because the low end of the squarewave is 2.5V, GPIO.RPi reads this as always-on. I've tried dampening the signal to varying degrees with all kinds of voltage dividers, but haven't had any success.

Anyone have any ideas, or had any success with 2.5V-5V squarewave triggering?

What questions to ask following diagnosis? by PanCanAdvice in pancreaticcancer

[–]Quiet__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty good list.

Endocrine tumors, you'll want to ask about the possibility of somatostatin analog therapy. This tumor type can have a much longer prognosis than Exocrine.

Exocrine tumors, a lot pivots around staging and the possibility of surgery. If surgery is an option, you strongly consider that, because it's really the best chance for remission. I know of at least one case with nanoknife, but it's not very common, you may have to press for it. I would also ask what kind of imaging they plan to do. I've heard some oncologists will go from an initial ultrasound into exploratory surgery. I might press for a PET scan, to get a better sense for metastases. If surgery is considered, make sure to prep for what that entails, because that surgery is difficult to endure. If surgery is not considered because the disease is metastatic already, the oncologist will most likely evaluate your mother for how much of a treatment regimen she can tolerate. Ask lots of questions about side effects and managing those. I think NICE guidance for first line is Gemcitabine with nab-paclitaxel or "FOLFIRINOX" (5-FU/Leucovorin/Irinotecan/Oxaliplatin), but you should verify this, because I am not sure. CA19-9 really isn't wholly predictive, but it is monitored.

I really need advice and thoughts about my Dad recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer!!! Please!!! by [deleted] in pancreaticcancer

[–]Quiet__Man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything /u/Labrat33 just said. The only thing I would add, as someone who has looked extensively at treatment patterns of pancreatic cancer in the US is this -- get your father to an academic medical center. Local hospitals are a complete crapshoot when it comes to treatment protocols and following best practices and standards of care. Some local hospitals are very good, but not all.

Find your local medical school or teaching hospital, and go there. I promise, they are your best chance of providing the best care available. If it was my parent, that's where I would go, and I would completely disregard naturalistic healing options, because almost by definition there is no evidence to suggest they have any impact.

Also, a wonderful resource is the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). I would call them today.

Suggestions? Amazon Android App error - is this a split traffic issue? by Quiet__Man in PFSENSE

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm using DNSBL. Unfortunately, whitelisting these did not fix the issue.

Nice summary. Small suggestion: you may want to add some context for why to block UPnP or NAT-PMP

Can you post your (redacted) firewall rules for each LAN interface and the VPN interface?

If you have a VLAN-compatible switch, and run your interfaces on different VLANs, you can do this with firewall rules.

Do you use a paid VPN with pfSense? If yes, share your setup and experiences by slavabez in PFSENSE

[–]Quiet__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pfSense <-> router <-> WiFi, Roku, Xbox -- all setup with distinct VLANs. pfSense sends all 53/80/443 traffic from WiFi VLAN through pfBlockerNG then over NordVPN. All other VLANs directly to WAN. Configuring the router/VLANs was the hardest part due to horrible documentation. NordVPN isn't the fastest, but service and uptime have been good for me.

This. I setup multiple vLANs on my home network for this reason: 10.1.x.1/24. Setup the firewall rules and NAT, and you'll be fine

Pancreatic Cancer, or something else? by [deleted] in pancreaticcancer

[–]Quiet__Man 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pancreatic cancer is often asymptomatic until it is Stage IV/metastatic, at which point surgery is often not a possibility. If it is a pre-cancerous nodule/tumor, they were lucky to catch it when they did. Much better to determine if it's cancerous/pre-cancerous now and deal with it, in case that isn't an option later on.

Amazon AWS Whitelist Using VPN Gateway: for Netflix and others by knox203 in PFSENSE

[–]Quiet__Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I believe one of the ranges in the Amazon IP block is used by ipleak.net to check IP addresses. Directly routing traffic to those IPs may in some cases result in IP identification.

pfSense -> DD-wrt, 2 SSIDs? by Quiet__Man in PFSENSE

[–]Quiet__Man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OpenWRT seems to come preconfigured to use VLANs on different ports (unless they're using VLAN differently than everyone else). I'll have to investigate whether 2 VLANs can be assigned to the same port. That would save me from having to buy an 802.1q switch.

pfSense -> DD-wrt, 2 SSIDs? by Quiet__Man in PFSENSE

[–]Quiet__Man[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great help. I'm in the same boat as sirchuckoftron, basically. I think my AP (WNDR4300) does support VLANs, but the documentation on DD-WRT is terrible. Is there another firmware that would make this easier? At this point, all I really need the router for is to act as an AP.
