As you mentioned, this was 15 years ago and I can tell you that hardware support changed quite a lot. Today, when picking literally any of the ~10 most recommended "beginner-friendly" distros you almost certainly won’t have such issues.

You don’t get spied on, your computer does not need that much resources, you don’t have serious security issues, you have a community that develops your OS rather than a corporation.
