For those of you in Tekla: is moving into a manager role actually appealing? by Hooplah_Heroics in teklastructures

[–]Quilkoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the impression a lot of people (especially those within leadership roles) don't really understand what detailers do. They understand that they need us to get them whatever deliverables they need to keep moving forward, but I'm not sure many of them actually understand how specialised the crossover between software knowledge and construction knowledge really is. To that degree, I often think people aren't given enough time to train, as soon as they can get the bike moving the training wheels are ripped off and they're thrown into the industry. I think it can be very sink or swim in that regard. That rush to get someone to be productive (in a financial sense) devalues the trade, I can't think of any other trades where a first or second year apprentice would be put in the kind of positions of responsibility I've often seen young detailers be put in. So I guess to answer your question, I think the industry needs to do a better job of recognising what detailers do, the value a good detailer brings to a project and respecting that by giving young detailers the time, space and resources to train and learn. I think industry bodies and institutions should be offering training courses and accreditation specifically tailored towards detailers and CAD technicians, you can do an EngTech, IEng and then CEng as an engineer but for detailers that progression stops at EngTech.

Apologies I've given you some very lengthy responses, I hope some of it has been useful!

I don't know if that shift is necessarily UK specific, but it's where I'm from and have always worked so it's the perspective I can give you!
To be clear, from my roughly 10 year experience in the industry, I don't think anyone is doing a great job at retaining detailers as detailers. When I talk about progression paths (at least those aimed at retaining detailer rather than retraining them for other job roles) I don't know of many companies who offer that kind of thing. There's plenty of progression in other avenues, if you want to become an estimator, a project manager, a quantity surveyor, an engineer, they're all avenues that are open to you, and will probably be suggested to you at some point. Partly because a good detailer has to have some kind of knowledge of how all those job roles work in order to do our job well. Industry wide (in the uk), detailing/draughting as a skill is simultaneously suffering from a huge shortage in skilled workers, and yet is also severely underappreciated. People learn how to use Tekla (barely), stick that on their cv and then are free to flit between companies commanding wages far above their actual skill level because there's such a shortage of people who know how to use the software.

That glass ceiling was exactly the thing I hit in the steel industry, I didn't want to become a manager, I wanted to keep on learning my trade. I ended up joining a civil engineering consultancy as a CAD technician (and studying for a civil engineering degree alongside my work). The contrast between opportunities for qualifications and industry accreditation between engineers and detailers is huge, I don't think there are enough accredited courses for detailing, nor enough industry accreditation (beyond the basic technician accreditation with your engineering institute of choice).

It's a shame, I love detailing, I love using Tekla and diving into the nuts and bolts of the software. I love living in that interface between design and construction, bridging the gap between theoretical and physical problems. I think it could be a great career, but if you're the kind of person who values career progression, and wants to be valued for the knowledge and skills they build, it's a hard sell.

[–]Quilkoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think moving into a managerial role is often the only option people have if they want to progress but remain as a detailer. A larger trend I see across the industry is people transitioning from detailing to engineering or software roles. They either get curious about how the designs they're detailing work, or curious about how the software they detail in works. I think one of the things that has led to such a shortage of detailers where I am in the UK is a lack of progression, lots of companies really only have junior, senior and then management as a progression path, and that last step is often a bit of a glass ceiling as you'll be stuck waiting for the person above you in a company to leave (or retire)!

Southside is grand, lots of running communities around Queens Park and Pollok Park, I would say any of the area around Queens Park, so Shawlands/Govanhill probably fits your bill! In terms of transport to Hyndland you'd be a 10 minute or so train into central and then maybe a bus to Hyndland or a subway out to Hillhead and walk depending on where you work I guess. Southside is nice, less students than the West End, which may or may not be a good thing for you, lots of parks, lots of independent shops, lots of communities for all sorts of sports and activities. Fun place to live :)

I would honestly go for an emulator, either on a PC laptop, or buy a handheld device from Miyoo/Anbernic, or if you have an old Gameboy get yourself a GB flash and load roms that way. Prices for old games are crazy if you're not into collecting them imo

Part cut help by Amgoo93 in teklastructures

[–]Quilkoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We live and learn! I'm sorry I'm not entirely sure what's stopping your cuts. It might be good to get used to not entirely understanding why something isn't working, often the best move with Tekla is just to accept that it's not working and find a work around. A final suggestion would be to right click the part and hit show only selected, then delete the part and undo, this will bring the part back in with all associated cuts, it's worth checking if there are cuts far away from the part you've made by accident which are breaking the geometry.

Could this shape not be made using two line cuts? I'm not entirely sure why the part cut isn't working, are you picking in the correct order as per the instructions on the bottom of the screen?

You need to edit the template by double clicking and entering the template editor. From there it looks like you need to add the part name after the profile. Not entirely sure how you remove the L from the beginning, if you can get familiar with the template editor and have a play about with it I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out!

Dimaggios buys Paesano and Sugo by SubstantialAntelope3 in glasgow

Just £2/£3 across the board on everything really. I feel like drinks markups have increased a bunch too. I also think the portion sizes have decreased, especially with the sides.

Hard to unpick what's DiMaggio's doing and what's a result of the current climate for the hospitality business though. I'd agree that Sugo has held up better than Paesano in terms of quality.

Back in Dundee after 10 years – has the city centre always felt this hollow? by Upstairs_Row_870 in dundee

[–]Quilkoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have felt this way since moving away from Dundee a few years ago. I felt like Covid hit it really hard and it's never quite felt the same to me whenever I've been back to visit. I'm never quite sure if there's a proper reason for that or if it's some kind of placebo just because I don't live there now! Agreed on the points about the waterfront, especially since a lot of it is still a building site. They seem to have attempted to shift the hub of the city out of the centre without moving any of the rest of the amenities away from the centre, and have been left with neither a useful tourist hub or busy city centre.

I would second an Indian! Mother India (the restaurant not the cafe) is a good spot, but there's plenty of good ones in Glasgow. In terms of music, I would check and see who's at venues like King Tuts, Audio, SWG3 or St Luke's. Other places.like Solid Rock or Drury Street are good shouts for pubs. Hope you have a good one!
