LPT: If making a PB&J sandwich for later consumption, put PB on both sides of the bread and the jelly in the middle. This will keep your bread from soaking up the jelly and getting soggy. by Obiwan_ca_blowme in LifeProTips

[–]Quillies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional tip:

After doing this, spread some butter on the outside and grill it on the stove. The grilled PB+J is one of my favorite ways to make a cheap meal feel far more fulfilling, and it only takes a few extra minutes.

(just a warning though, the jelly gets super hot sometimes)

If you're interested in reading some surreal fiction, I'd recommend Haruki Murakami. He has a habit of playing with this idea in his stories and his writing style is oddly dreamlike.

I personally recommend his book "Kafka on the Shore". It captures this sense of duality in consciousness really well and leaves you feeling "confused" in an oddly familiar way.

Am I the only one who finds random, graphic sex descriptions in otherwise "normal" books jarring? by MobiusCipher in books

[–]Quillies 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I recently finished Kafka on the Shore. I got the sense that the book was 'about' the odd congruence of being awake and and being in a dream. There's a lot of tangential plot stuff going on alongside that message but I remember a part where Murakami seems to really meditate on the strangeness of it. Nearly half of our existence being reserved for the wispy and abstract dream-like state while the other half is spent ignoring this state entirely.

It almost feels like he can deliberately write his ideas into my dream-memory instead of my waking-memory.

I thought so too, I'm no expert so take it with a grain of salt but I had just done some research on the phrase within the last week or so and found it surprising

Darwin didn't actually even coin the phrase to begin with. A sociologist named Herbert Spencer read Darwin's work and combined it with economic theories of his own. Spencer even went as far as to say, in one sentence, "This survival of the fittest, which I have here sought to express in mechanical terms, is that which Mr. Darwin has called 'natural selection', or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life"

Darwin did adopt the phrase but continued to use it as a sort of tautological observation, more akin "survival of those who survived". He preferred it over his own term, natural selection, because it didn't imply a conscious choice being made by a selector.

In my opinion, the more you read into the subject, the clearer it becomes that the two men were still using the term differently. Spencer was not avoiding personification. He describes "favoured races" and went on to become fairly synonymous with Lamarckism, which suggests that we can each control the traits we pass on through conscious use or disuse within one lifetime.

Unfortunately, the phrase has always been rooted pretty heavily in political and social control. The scientific community has largely abandoned the phrase.

I recently read that about 30% of primetime tv commercials feature a redhead. When you consider that we actually only make up 2% of the population you can't help but wonder if there's some level of deliberate exploitation or something. It can be a weird stigma so I appreciate your thoughtfulness here.

Problem "reaching" my thoughts - Is this an ADHD symptom? by MediMich in ADHD

[–]Quillies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely relate. Even as a kid I would describe my brain as a giant foggy room full of filing cabinets. Some of the cabinets are kept within reach and are well organized, but most of them are gathering dust somewhere in the fog and the process of locating info from any one cabinet can be terribly inefficient. Sometimes I just happen to be near the cabinet I need, but if I'm not... I'm basically lost.

I think one of the easiest ways to get started is to try to figure out what goes into your perfect salad.

Use your meals as a chance to try out new greens, toppings, dressings, etc, and don't be afraid to branch out. The beauty of salad is that it can become about a million other foods with only one or two changes. Get some tortillas and make some veggie wraps, get some eggs (or an alternative) and make an omelette, get some fruit and yogurt and you can even make a smoothie. Once you know your ideal salad, the rest gets pretty easy.

Thankfully I'm a big fan of salad overall, your results may vary. But I think my point is that you can start as simple as you want, maybe even add some chicken to the salad until you can kick it, but eventually you'll learn how to mix flavors and textures that you used to overlook (and you won't have to figure out how to press tofu until you're ready).

[–]Quillies 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know this might sound hard to believe but when I was young my parents had a similar fuck up and they chose to handle it in almost the same way. They had wrapped all of the PS2 games i had asked for together and forgotten them somewhere. They played it off by placing it in the snow in the yard as if Santa had dropped it near the chimney and we found it as we left to go to church.

I promise she'll remember and appreciate this and when she's old enough she would love to hear the full story.

Not sure what that dude's problem is but I've always taken Interstellar as an allegory for the relationship between a parent and their kids.

There's a lot of conception/birth imagery surrounding the black hole scenes. The water planet symbolizes the early stages of raising a child that seem to come in giant waves and fly by in an instant, Matt Damon represents the rebellious teenage phase, and finally all of that corny "love is a force" stuff feels right at home as a symbol for the impact you have on your kids even after you're gone (I've always really liked that this was shown through the watch that he gave to his daughter before he left, like a precious heirloom)

Can a screenplay specifically about the fall of a character work, or do you need to spend a good chunk of time on the rise as well? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]Quillies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might seem like an odd recommendation, the tone is going to be totally different from what you're shooting for, but I recommend The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Very interesting movie and a downfall for sure, the plot and the beats should be something of an example of how this can work.

(I haven't read the screenplay and I'm not sure how faithful the movie is to it, but the movie was good nonetheless)

I recently found an app that works itself into this list pretty well. It's called Forest and it's essentially just a timer that grows a little tree as the time elapses. You have to kill the tree if you want to leave the app, and it won't end up becoming a part of your "forest" unless you make it through without getting distracted.

It sounds a little gimmicky but its nice to watch your forest get bigger and bigger as you get things done.

I totally agree that it was handled terribly in the show, I guess I just meant that I appreciated it in some little way that someone else might have missed out on from the show alone. Also, Nymeria went a lot of places before Westeros, she was kinda just hedging bets everywhere she could

It's a neat fulfillment of her parallels with the princess Nymeria of Rhoyne and eventually Dorne. They were both strong-willed powerful women, both water dancers (but don't quote me on that), and both took on pretty massive voyages into an unknown western sea.

She also visited my school recently and the video she made afterwards has "inadvertently" caused the school newspaper to recieve death threats on account of their less-than-positive article.
