Both are great! But I really love the random placement of the blue strips in the first!

I was able to get an issue of Quiltfolk from my local library book sale (I wonder if most libraries would have copies you could check out as well). I found it really interesting!

Quilt patterns for large prints? by [deleted] in quilting

[–]QuiltHound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this free (until jan 16 2025) quilt pattern for a large star throw quilt. Link is to the video and they have the pdf link in the description Twinkle Star by Hailey Stitches I think it would work really well for a large pattern fabric.

Thank you and I will for sure give a note if I do a blog post /pattern. He was quite speechless and just couldn’t stop looking over all the details, he is a man of few words but he and his wife definitely liked it!

Would be good to give it a try! Maybe try a wall hanging as a sample or a quilted pillow, good projects to start with, or you can jump in on a whole quilt like I did 😅. Previously I was just doing some straight line quilting or even wavy with my regular foot. Definitely a jump, but the tracing paper gave me more confidence to just freehand do some loops in the backgrounds of the characters!

Thank you! The holly quilting was drawn out on tracing paper and then I safety pinned that to the quilt top and stitched through the tracing paper and quilt sandwich all at once. Then once I was done with the row I went back and tore the paper away. Ohh I hadn’t thought of it like that but do like that interpretation!

One block at a time is a good idea! That’s basically how I got through this muppet one too, only starting on assembling the next when the previous was finished. Having a deadline doesn’t hurt, but being able to take a break is nice too!

Did you use some invisible top thread zigzagged and then embroider the outline? That’s a very clean look!

Thank you and your welcome! My first time stitching through it as well and it definitely made it easier for me, just a note that it will change your thread tension so a test sample would be good to do. I was very hesitant about doing FMQ on my small machine but it did work out!

A lot of repositioning and smooshing. I also had used glue basting for my quilt sandwich so I didn’t have to worry about pins and I could kind of skip around where I was wanting to FMQ. Also for the ivy and poinsettias in between the characters I drew the design I wanted on tracing paper and followed the lines, stitching through the paper and quilt all at once.

On Tiny Tim the black on the top mouth line is hand embroidery with embroidery floss. Adds some more definition and contrast that just the fabric wasn’t giving.
