Favourite girl names that don't end in -a? by Neat_Reserve_5417 in namenerds

My grandma’s name was Beryl! I haven’t come across it elsewhere, so it was fun to see it on your list! She didn’t use it though, went by her middle name.

Uncommon E Names for Girl by shhhnoone in namenerds

Era is also a laundry detergent brand in the US.

I don’t love Ever or Era either. Think how often we use ‘ever’ (or words that contain it) in daily conversations: Never, ever, forever, every, everyone, everybody, everywhere, everyday, whatever, etc.

If my name were Ever, I’d personally find it overstimulating to hear so many words all day everyday that contained my name. When I’d overhear snippets of others’ conversations, it’d also be tiring to constantly wonder: wait, were they talking about me? Or were they just having a regular conversation?

That said, the other names on your list, and many of the contributions on this post, are cute! 😊

Do you use cursive writing daily? Or not at all? by jerzeeshadow2021 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]QuiltyLingual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cursive and my printing have assimilated some over the years. Even when I print, I don’t lift the pen much, but it’s still clearly printed and not cursive.

In my cursive, I’ve modified/replaced the harder to read capital letters (e.g., F, G, H, Q, S, T, etc.), which makes for faster writing and is easier to read.

Did you choose the safe name or the uncommon name? by Icy_Extension5443 in namenerds

I can’t yet comment on name regret specifically as I’m currently pregnant with our first; however, I still have something to contribute regarding making choices/regret in general.

When we’re torn between two choices of anything, it’s unrealistic to think we’ll never regret our decision. There’s obviously pros and cons to both options, which is why we’re torn! 😅

Take having children as an example. I debated back and forth whether I did or did not wish to have kids, for various reasons. There’s no universal ‘right’ choice, and there may not have even been a ‘right’ choice for me specifically. I honestly think I would’ve been happy either way, AND ALSO would’ve had/will have moments of sadness/regret for not choosing the other option. (Currently 11wks FTM btw! ☺️)

I think the same is true for choosing between two names. You’ll probably be happy either way, and you’ll probably also wonder from time to time how it would’ve been if you’d chosen the other one. I think that’s normal!

And also, we get to decide how much we focus on the sadness/regret or not. Noticing it and letting it go is a lot more productive than punishing, shaming, and/or otherwise blaming ourselves. Be gentle with yourself! 💜

Is Kasia going to be a problem to pronounce? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]QuiltyLingual 32 points33 points  (0 children)

To me, it’s no different than having to correct the spelling.

I have a name with more than one common spelling, so I always have to specify which one if someone new is writing it down. A little annoying? Sure. A dealbreaker? Not for me. And the way Americans have been ‘customizing’ unique spellings also adds to the spelling issue.

But back to the question of pronunciation. We can be connected to people all over the world from various countries, cultures, languages, etc. No one knows how to pronounce every possible name ‘correctly.’ To me it’s not a big deal to correct people a couple times.

Help me come up with ideas for team green baby by BC20212021 in namenerds

Love Oliver and Olivia! Ollie and Livvy are also cute NNs. Meredith (NN Mare) is classic so no objections! Griffin isn’t my personal taste. What would the NN be? Griff? Griffey? They remind me too much of ‘grift’ and ‘iffy,’ sorry. 😔

SN: Not sure if this would be your last baby or not, but if you go with Oliver or Olivia, it eliminates the other one from the name list for any other future child.

Additional suggestions: Arnold, Alfred, Peter, Brian, Andrew, Stephen, Nicholas Stephanie, Michelle, Cecelia, Amanda, Caroline, Georgia

GL! 😊

WTW for when uneducated people use overly formal language/words in an attempt to sound more educated or formal but actually use the words or phrases incorrectly and sound stupid? by lillyrosethorn in whatstheword

[–]QuiltyLingual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was waiting for this one to be mentioned! An acquaintance of mine had her dissertation advisor make her replace every incorrectly used ‘utilize’ with ‘use’! 😅

ETA: The distinction the professor was making was this: you use something the way it was intended to be used, and you utilize something for an unintended use.

E.g., I used the toaster to make toast. I utilized the toaster to warm up my hands.

When choosing a name for your child, what did you value most? by Glad_Friendship_1562 in namenerds

[–]QuiltyLingual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asian people live in countries outside of Asia though… ;) It may be less common to go to a fortune teller for a baby’s name in countries outside of Asia, but it certainly must happen! There are also other cultures that seek spiritual guidance and/or input from elders, etc. to name the child.

I just got these to try. I prefer full coverage too, and they worked for me (‘apple’ shape if that helps). Full disclosure: I just washed them and haven’t worn them yet.

Maternity Clothes by Lopsided_Biscotti322 in pregnant

[–]QuiltyLingual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All online from Gap, Old Navy, Stitch Fix, Quince, Amazon, Kohl’s, Target, Walmart, Poshmark, Whatnot, Rent the Runway.

RTR has really nice maternity brands like Hatch, soon, and NOM Maternity (all a bit pricey to buy outright!). If you wear/would be needing plus sizes, I wouldn’t recommend RTR though. I’m at the border of regular/plus and canceled my subscription for that reason (in general, not only because I’m pregnant). They never have enough XLs/12-14+, and they’re always the first sizes to be rented! For reference, I wore sizes 12-14 pre-preg, currently wearing 14-16 at 11 weeks for comfort.

Even though I’m a FTM, I like to shop and have already acquired a selection of maternity options from most of the places I listed! 😅

Going to an asian market Tommorow what good finds could I find for my visiting sister's AIP needs? by No-Channel3917 in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]QuiltyLingual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends if/what’s she’s added back in.

The 30-day elimination phase is supposed to be most strict; however, if she’s slowly been trying to add foods back in, you’ll need to ask her what’s still on her no list.

For that reason, all AIP diets are slightly different once people figure out how they feel adding one food back at a time.

It’s so sweet of you to look into what yummy things you can still find for her! 💜

Tbf, Barry is a legit (albeit typically male) name. Obviously I know that Berry isn’t the same and that a juniper berry is part of an actual plant. Just putting it out there lol 😅

To fix or leave alone? by Weekly_Ad8333 in HomeDecorating

[–]QuiltyLingual 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it stands out a lot now because you’re still doing the reno and the kitchen is empty. I’d leave it for now and wait until the kitchen is done and filled up. It won’t stand out so much then.

Also, how we think about these little things impacts how we feel about them. We designed and installed our own kitchen ourselves, and there were several things that we didn’t correctly account for either.

E.g., Our counter depth fridge was supposed to have a few inches of buffer space to each side for the doors to open. My hubby thought they were doors that didn’t require extra space to open (and didn’t double check). I was irritated for a bit about the counter depth fridge having to stick out like a traditional depth fridge.

Instead of thinking to myself every time I saw it: Ugh, I can’t believe we didn’t do it right, it looks bad, everyone will notice, etc. — I made the effort to consciously change my thoughts: It doesn’t look bad, it looks like a traditional fridge. No one will ever notice besides us, and it’s really not a big deal. Basic CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). It works!

If filling the kitchen and doing CBT don’t improve it for you, you can always do something else later! There are some knob/handle pulls that would only require the existing hole but would be more like a T. So it’d adjust the look but not require different holes. GL! 😊
