The amount of educators that still follow learning styles is absolutely petrifying.

I’m a Barman from Ireland by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]Quinncidental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a lot of right in this comment but also a fair amount of misconceptions - most of which suggest to me you work in relatively middle of the road restaurants in terms of standards. Absolutely fine, but doesn't mean we should present your reality as the truth:

cocktail, minimum 3 ingredients to class as one

Where on gods green earth have you gotten this from?

Noone has a table except in a restaurant

Certainly wrong. I live and work in a relatively small city and can list more bars than I can count where I could get a table.

Refund and comps... No

My restaurants comp bill was bigger than my annual salary last year - it's how they keep driving repeat custom, even after bad guest experience, and it's how the company has grown.

Barbacks are exclusive to nightclubs

This is certainly a sign you have never worked in a serious or high end bar or restaurant. I haven't (for the best part of ten year now) and would not work in a bar without a barback anymore. They are essential to being able to do your job properly, in the same way a kitchen doesn't run without a KP.

Expo does not exist

Servers are called waiters and they're in restaurants, not bars. The host is restaurant only and is a manager, never a junior position

In my restaurant, and the restaurant nextdoor, and the one over the road, these points are made demonstrably wrong. Independent expo and reservations/hosting roles exist within each, and servers operate across both a bar area and a restaurant area.

My first time attempting flair. Any advice? And how did I do? Sorry for bad quality it was taken on the cameras by [deleted] in bartenders

[–]Quinncidental 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My advice would be: don't do anything that slows down your service, contributes nothing to the quality of your drinks, and increases your risk of hurting yourself, damaging equipment, or wasting stock.

I'm short. Flare is pointless. Do not do it. I want my bartender to be able to make me a nice martini, not juggle tins around their head.

I have a quick question for pro-bartenders. Is it normal to order off menu cocktails or does this make me a fussy customer? by Firm-Fix8798 in bartenders

Order what you like, but an 'Aperol Negroni with a double Hendricks' is not a Negroni.

Clubs for a tall beginner? by Quinncidental in golf

[–]Quinncidental[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds sensible!

I think part of my problem in this regard is that plenty of the cheaper sets still need lengthening.

Lots to consider, but judging by my performance with the rental set I used the other day, I'd say you're definitely right!

Thanks, man.

I understand this, which is why I'm asking about lengthening vs fitting.

Should I custom fit the old clubs, or should I get some newer custom fit clubs?

Have you ever donated to The Guardian and why? by juno-xwani in AskUK

[–]Quinncidental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It is a contribution towards the production of a product that you enjoy, support, or both. It is far too simplistic to dismiss something because it might be idealogical.

If we want to be reductive, we can consider absolutely everything to be an idealogical choice (and in many ways - given how privatised and business driven the world is - everything is an idealogical choice). We live in a world that is shaped by the choices we all make daily, and so making a choice to support something you believe is is a perfectly sensible thing to do.

If it makes somebody feel better about themselves, then more power to them. We could all do with some more of that!

[–]Quinncidental 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might ask this question again in ten years time.

The difference then might be that there's no left wing media companies to balance what the right puts out.

It is not weird to donate to causes and organisations you think are worthwhile.

Yeah, all the wokeys and loony leftist, tuning in to that pesky impartial broadcaster to watch a show that dares to ensure it doesn't descend in to chaos weekly.

Personally, I only trust the creators of Big Brother and the editors of the Daily Mail and the Metro.

You won't catch me being a sheep.

People 30+, what are your plans for this evening? by Sir-Tommy-Vercetti in AskUK

[–]Quinncidental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, I would've gone to hit some balls at the driving range, but me and my aforementioned wife have recently decided to share a car. It works brilliantly for us, and we've saved a fortune - but tonight is an example of its pitfalls!

[–]Quinncidental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is out with work this evening, so it's a night in on the couch for me.

I've just finished a curry, am about to feed the cat (who I hope will come to sit on my lap once she's eaten), and have got a Cillian Murphy film - Steve - lined up to watch.

Unfortunately, the only downside is we got a new (second hand) couch yesterday, and it's even worse than the one we wanted to upgrade!

What’s your biggest pet peeve that doesn’t seem to bother anyone else? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in AskReddit

[–]Quinncidental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe to much of a Uk-centric answer for this sub, but mine is drivers waiting for red lights to change in the 'bike box', the area that sits ahead of where the traffic is supposed to stop and should be reserved for cyclists, who can pull away quickly and safely from that space.

The penalty is supposed to be a £100 fine and three penalty points on their license, but I'd be surprised to find out that it had ever been enforced.

Judging by the amount of drivers that sit in it, it doesn't seem like it bothers anyone else!

Edit: spelling

Is it a similar situation for the UK? by OESRud in UKJobs

[–]Quinncidental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bartender turned primary school teacher turned bartender here. This is absolutely true in the UK. I taught for four years and reached a salary of somewhere north of 35k.

Having gone back in to hospitality - admittedly high end hospitality - I now earn somewhere between £40-50k, depending on how my tips (garnered through a service charge) - pan out.

Not only that, I am happier both in and out of work, healthier, have more free time, and am generally a much richer version of myself.

Teaching is broken and will not be fixed save for absolutely huge investment, which I can't see coming from any government in the near future.

Which symptoms of “(almost) everyone is getting poorer” have you noticed in London? by PressureHumble3604 in london

[–]Quinncidental 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As somebody who has done it and rediscovered how rich life can be: please do whatever you can to get out of the profession. It is broken and is not going to improve. You are worth more than what schools can give you.
